What zodiacal releasing is
Zodiacal releasing (apotelesma) appears in Vettius Valens' 2nd-century Anthology: from a chosen Part — most essentially the Lot of Spirit — the zodiac 'releases' one sign at a time, each sign held for its traditional number of years.
The sign you are released into colors an entire chapter: its element and modality set the texture, and its ruler (the Time Lord of that period) says where the chapter plays out in your chart.
Each chapter then unwinds into sub-chapters of the same kind, counted from the chapter-sign's own degree — and in the full classical method, sub-sub-periods again after that. This tool computes chapters and one level of sub-chapters, which is more than enough to find your current era and the shape of the decades around it.
How we compute it
The starting Lot is real spherical astronomy from your chart: the Lot of Fortune is Ascendant + Moon − Sun by day and the reverse by night, Spirit inverts that pair, and Eros adds 90° to Spirit — all sect-aware, using the same day-birth test the natal engine applies. Your birth instant is resolved against actual time zones before the Ascendant and luminary longitudes enter the formula.
Chapter lengths then come from fixed classical sign-durations — not the ephemeris, and we are explicit about that. Two attested sequences are offered: the balanced trailing-12 order (12, 7, 15, 9, 4, 11 years repeating) used by modern practitioners, and the classical Chaldaic durations (15, 12, 7, 19, 11, 12, repeating through the zodiac). Both are documented in the sources below; compare them and see which maps better onto your lived timeline.
What you get
After entering your birth data:
- Your chosen Lot's exact position and the sign it releases from.
- The full chapter timeline with year spans (e.g. Gemini 0–15, Cancer 15–24) up to and past your current age.
- Nested sub-chapters inside the active chapter, each with its own span.
- A Spirit / Fortune / Eros switch — the three classical Lots each generate their own parallel timeline.
- A choice of duration tables (trailing-12 vs Chaldaic) so you can test both traditions.
How to read a chapter
Start with the element: fire chapters are traditionally read as activation — initiative, visibility, heat; earth as material consolidation; air as conversation, learning and networks; water as feeling, digestion and retreat. The modality adds pacing — cardinal starts things, fixed sustains them, mutable turns them. A fire-cardinal chapter and a water-mutable one feel like different jobs even when life's events look similar.
Then locate the chapter's ruler in your natal chart: the sign and house it occupies say where the chapter's energy actually spends itself. A Gemini chapter ruled by a Mercury in the 10th, for example, is classically read as a period whose communication themes play out publicly. Finally, stack the layers — the sub-chapter sign modifies the chapter the way a weather system modifies a season.
A worked example, with real numbers
Take the 1 January 2000, 17:30 UTC London chart: night birth (the Sun is below the horizon), Ascendant 28.8° Cancer, Sun 10.6° Capricorn, Moon 16.1° Scorpio. The night formula for the Lot of Spirit — Ascendant + Moon − Sun — places it at 4.3° Gemini, so the releasing starts in Gemini.
With the trailing-12 durations the chapters run Gemini 0–15, Cancer 15–24, Leo 24–28, Virgo 28–39, Libra 39–51, Scorpio 51–58, Sagittarius 58–73. At age 26 this chart sits in the four-year Leo chapter — fire, fixed — and its sub-cycle within Leo is counted from Leo itself. Switching to the Chaldaic table re-times the same life differently (Gemini 0–7, Cancer 7–26, Leo 26–37, …), which is exactly the comparison the ancient sources invite you to make.
What this tool does not claim
The chapter boundaries are symbolic arithmetic on fixed year-lengths; nothing astronomical decides that a Leo chapter lasts four years. Different manuscripts and modern schools give different duration tables, different Lot priorities and different starting conventions — we ship two of the main tables rather than pretending one is canonical.
There is no controlled evidence that these chapters correspond to life events. Use the timeline as a structure for reviewing how the last decade felt and how the next might be worked with, not as a forecast. All calculation happens in your browser; your birth data is never transmitted.
Zodiacal releasing vs profections and solar return
Annual profections advance one sign per year — a fast, simple dial good for 'what is this year about?'. Zodiacal releasing works on the same sign-based logic but at chapter scale: years to two decades per step, which is why practitioners call them eras. The solar return is neither: it is a real chart cast for a real moment each year.
A common workflow is releasing for the era, profection for the year, solar return for the stage — this tool covers the first, the Time Lords calculator the second.
Our method in one line
Sect-aware Lot positions computed from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine) longitudes, stepped through sign-length chapters using the stated classical duration tables. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.
Step by step
- 1
Enter your birth data
Date, exact-ish time and place — the Lot formulas need the Ascendant and both luminaries.
- 2
Choose a Lot
Spirit for purpose and agency, Fortune for what arrives unbidden, Eros for desire. Each gives its own timeline.
Tip — Most students start with Spirit — it maps best onto chosen work.
- 3
Find your chapter
The active era is highlighted at your current age, with its sub-chapters beneath.
- 4
Compare the duration tables
Toggle trailing-12 vs Chaldaic and see which sequence has actually described your life so far.
Frequently asked questions
- Which Lot should I use — Spirit or Fortune?
- Fortune (tyche) is traditionally the passivizing lot — what happens to you, provision, circumstance. Spirit (thymos) is the active lot — purpose, drive, how you pursue things. Valens releases chiefly from Spirit; many modern practitioners read both timelines side by side since they are sect-mirrors of each other.
- What are the sign-durations and why are there two tables?
- The ancient sources assign each sign a number of years (the 'zodiacal periods' inherited from Chaldaic astronomy): 15, 12, 7, 19, 11, 12 repeating by sign. A second, later scheme distributes the 12-year Jupiter cycle as 12, 7, 15, 9, 4, 11 repeating. Both are attested; practitioners choose by school, so this tool lets you choose by evidence — compare them against your own history.
- Do sub-chapters really nest that deep?
- Yes — the classical method unwinds each chapter into sub-chapters from its own degree, and those into sub-sub-periods. In practice most readings stop at two levels; this tool gives you chapter plus sub-chapter, which is where the technique is most useful.
- Does an unknown birth time ruin this?
- It weakens the starting Lot, which depends on the Ascendant. With an approximate time we compute normally but you should treat the chapter boundaries as indicative — the sign-based element/modality reading is the least affected part.
- Is my birth data private?
- Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. The entire timeline is computed locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
