What a solar return is

Once a year the transiting Sun crosses the exact degree and minute of the zodiac your natal Sun occupied at birth — usually within a day either side of your calendar birthday. The chart cast for that precise instant is your solar return. Since medieval astrology it has been read as the theme-sheet for the twelve months running to your next birthday. It flags where the year's Ascendant points, which house the returned Sun lands in, and what Moon sign keeps the emotional weather.

Because the return is an actual astronomical event, its time is exact and computable — no judgement calls. Its houses, however, depend on where you physically are when it happens. That is why serious solar-return practice uses the chart for your birthday location, not your birthplace. This tool does both: cast at birthplace by default, or point it at the city where you'll spend the birthday.

How we find and cast it

We bracket the birthday by ±20 days and scan the Sun's apparent longitude (from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine)) for the forward crossing of your natal degree. We skip retrograde backward passes, then bisect the crossing to better than a minute. The bracket matters because the calendar date of the return drifts by up to a day every four years with leap years. A naive 'birthday at birth-time' chart would be off by hours.

The return instant is then cast as a full chart through the same engine as your natal, using Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart) for the chosen location. The Ascendant and houses therefore describe the year's arena. Alongside it we compute two traditional timing layers. The first is annual profection, advancing one sign per year from your Ascendant to find the year's 'Time Lord'. The second is zodiacal releasing from your natal Part of Fortune, using the classical 12/7/15/9/4/11-year chapter lengths.

What you get

For any year you select:

  • The exact solar-return instant (UTC, to the second) and the full return chart — Ascendant, Sun, Moon and every placement in its year-house.
  • A one-line reading of each of the big three of the year: return Rising (the arena), return Sun (where vitality goes), return Moon (the emotional baseline).
  • Your annual profection sign, the house of your chart it activates, and the Time Lord — including where that lord actually sits in your natal chart.
  • Your zodiacal-releasing chapter map: which sign-rule you are under at this age, and the chapters around it.

How to read the year honestly

Traditionally the return Ascendant sets the tone. A Leo rising year is performed as a year of visibility, a Pisces rising year as one of dissolution and retreat. The house the returned Sun occupies then says where the year's energy is genuinely spent. A 6th-house Sun year is about work and health routines, whatever the Rising suggests. The Moon adds the weather: its sign and house describe how the year feels from inside, month to month.

The profection adds the classical 'director' for the year. If Cancer is your profected sign at 36, the Moon is your Time Lord, and its own natal house and sign colour what kind of month-by-month story the year is. Treat all of it as vocabulary for naming the season you're in, not as a preview of events. The honest use is retrospective — 'this frame describes the year I've had' — which is also where it tends to feel most accurate.

A worked example, with real numbers

For a birth at 13:15 UTC on 5 May 1990 in New York, the natal Sun sits at 14.8° Taurus. The 2026 solar return fires on 5 May 2026 at 06:28 UTC, the Sun completing its arc back to exactly that degree. Cast for the birthplace, the returned Sun lands in the 3rd house, with an Aquarius 21° Ascendant and the return Moon at 23.8° Sagittarius in the 10th. Traditionally that reads as a year of visible, fast-moving communication.

The same year's profection sits at Cancer, the first profected house, with the Moon as Time Lord. Zodiacal releasing from a Part of Fortune in Scorpio puts age 36 inside an 11-year Pisces chapter. Every one of those numbers is produced by the same engine you just used, for your own data.

What this tool does not claim

Solar returns are a traditional symbolic system. There is no controlled evidence that the chart at the Sun's return degree predicts the year ahead. We present it as a narrative framework for reflection, not forecast. Zodiacal releasing in particular runs on fixed classical chapter-lengths. It is arithmetic on the zodiac, not astronomy, and we label it as such in the result.

Two practical accuracy notes. The return instant itself is exact for any birth data, but if your birth time is unknown your natal Ascendant (and therefore the profection sequence) is estimated. And a return chart cast for the birthplace describes the birthday, not the whole year, if you celebrated elsewhere — that is why the location field exists. Everything runs in your browser; Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.

Solar return vs. transits and progressions

A solar return compresses the year into one chart at one moment. Transits watch the moving sky interact with your natal chart continuously, and progressions run a slow inner clock (one day per year). Experienced astrologers use the return for the annual theme, transits for what is actually activating week to week, and progressions for the underlying personal season. Our transits & progressions tool covers the other two lenses with the same engine.

Our method in one line

Return instant located by bracketed bisection of the Sun's forward crossing of the natal degree to sub-minute precision; chart cast with sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine) and Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart); profection and releasing follow the classical sign-length rules and are labelled symbolic. Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Date, time and place — the natal Sun's exact degree is what the year's Sun returns to.

  2. 2

    Pick the year

Step forward or back with the arrows, or type any year of your life. The return is found to the second.

  3. 3

    Optionally set your birthday location

Where you'll actually be matters: the return's Ascendant and houses are cast for that place.

  4. 4

    Read the three layers together

Return chart for the theme, profection for the year's director, releasing for the longer chapter underneath.

Tip — If your return says 'no crossing this year', try the adjacent calendar year — the date drifts around leap years.

Frequently asked questions

Is the solar return always on my birthday?
Usually within about a day of it, but not exactly — the Sun returns to your natal degree at a moment that shifts up to a day earlier or later every four years through leap years, and a December birthday can even find its return on New Year's Eve of the previous calendar year. That is why this tool searches for the true crossing instead of assuming the calendar date.
Why does the location where I celebrate matter?
The chart's houses and Ascendant come from the horizon at wherever you are at the return instant. A year cast for your birthplace can put the returned Sun in a different house than a chart cast for the city you flew to — traditionally read as the difference between the year 'as scheduled' and the year 'as lived'.
What is a Time Lord?
In annual profection, your chart is stepped forward one zodiac sign per year from the Ascendant; the classical ruler of the sign you land on that year is its 'lord' and is treated as the year's director. At age 36 for a Cancer Ascendant, the sign reached is Cancer and the Time Lord is the Moon.
What if I don't know my birth time?
The solar return instant, the Sun's sign and every planet's sign are still exact — they don't depend on your time. The houses of the return chart and your profection sign (which steps from the Ascendant) do, so those parts are flagged as estimates.
Is my birth data private?
Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. The return search scans the ephemeris locally, which is fast but entirely on-device.
