What a natal chart is
A natal chart is a map of the sky exactly as it appeared from your birthplace at the moment you were born. It plots where each planet sat along the ecliptic, which zodiac sign each one fell in, and which of the twelve houses it occupied.
Astrology reads that snapshot as a set of symbols for temperament, focus and life themes — a framework for reflection, not a prediction. This calculator builds your map from your date, exact time and city of birth, then assembles a plain-language reading of every placement.
How your chart is calculated (and why the birth time matters)
Everything starts from three inputs: your birth date, your birth time, and your birth location. We convert your civil birth time to a true UTC instant using the historical timezone and daylight-saving rules in effect at your birthplace on that date, then compute the positions you see in your report.
Planet positions come from the open-source astronomy library astronomy-engine, which implements the VSOP87 planetary theories and the ELP lunar theory — the same class of figures professional ephemerides are built on. Positions are reported as apparent geocentric, tropical ecliptic longitudes referenced to the equinox of date, so they line up with the zodiac Western astrology uses. The Sun and planets are accurate to well under an arc-minute.
The four angles — the Ascendant and Midheaven, plus their opposites — are derived from your local sidereal time, the obliquity of the ecliptic and your geographic latitude, using the standard rising-point formula. We then divide the chart with the Porphyry house system (equal trisection of each quadrant between the angles), and you can switch any chart to whole-sign houses. Because the Ascendant turns roughly one sign every two hours, an accurate birth time is what makes your house cusps and Rising sign dependable.
If your birth time is unknown, we still cast every planet accurately at local noon and clearly flag the Ascendant, houses and angles as approximate — your Sun, Moon and planets remain valid, only the house layout is uncertain.
What your free birth chart report includes
The report is assembled from your actual placements, not a fixed template. Every section you see below is generated from the chart above:
- Your Big Three — Sun sign, Moon sign and Ascendant — with a reading of each.
- A full placement table: all ten planets by sign, exact degree, house, and retrograde status.
- Mind, heart and drive — Mercury, Venus and Mars in sign.
- The houses your planets activate, and what each house traditionally governs.
- An aspects table with orbs and applying/separating status for your major patterns.
- Your element and modality balance across fire, earth, air and water.
- North Node, Black Moon Lilith and the Part of Fortune.
- Four signature chart indices (Life Purpose, Karmic, Emotional and Growth), each shown with an explanation rather than a bare number.
How to read your results
Read the chart as a set of ingredients, not verdicts. A planet is a basic function (the Sun is vitality and identity, the Moon is emotional need, Mercury is how you think); the sign colours how that function expresses itself; the house says where in life it plays out most visibly; and aspects describe how the functions get along. A single placement is one thread — the meaning of a chart is the whole weave, so weigh patterns over any one line.
In practice, the most reliable way to use a birth chart is reflective rather than fortune-telling: notice which of the described themes already ring true, and treat the rest as a question to explore. That is exactly the stance we take throughout this site — accurate astronomy, honestly-labelled symbolism.
A worked example
To show what the output looks like before you enter your own data: a chart cast for 12:00 on 21 June 2026 in London places the Sun at about 0° Cancer on the Midheaven (a summer-solstice noon birth), the Moon in Virgo, Mercury and Jupiter together in Cancer, Saturn near 14° Aries, and the Ascendant in Pisces.
The report would read that as a highly visible, protective identity (Sun on the MC in Cancer), an analytical, service-oriented emotional tone (Moon in Virgo), and a private, imaginative outer persona (rising Pisces) — with the Sun conjunct Mercury and Jupiter indicating a mind that thinks in big, nurturing narratives.
Your own example will differ in every placement. The point is that each line of the reading traces directly back to a computed position you can verify in the table.
Accuracy, and what this tool does not claim
The astronomy is precise; the interpretation is not science. There is no controlled evidence that planetary positions at birth cause the personality traits tradition assigns to them, and the double-blind tests that have examined it (most famously Carlson's 1985 study in The Zodiac-Evidence Test) found astrologers could not match charts to profiles better than chance. We present the reading as a centuries-old symbolic language worth reflecting with — not as a factual forecast of your health, wealth or relationships.
A few practical limits are worth knowing: the chart's angles depend on an accurate birth time, and a one-hour timezone or daylight-saving error shifts the Ascendant by roughly a sign. Very high birth latitudes can make quadrant house systems unstable. Positions are tropical; if you practice sidereal (Vedic) astrology, note the ayanamsa offset. Nothing on this page is medical, psychological or financial advice.
Natal chart vs. the other core charts
The natal chart is the foundation every other reading is built on. Here is how it relates to the two most-requested sibling tools:
- Natal vs. Sun-Moon-Rising: the Big Three is a fast summary of just three points; the full natal chart adds every planet, all twelve houses and the aspects between them.
- Natal vs. Synastry: synastry takes two natal charts and overlays the aspects between them — you need both natal charts before relationship astrology means anything.
- Natal vs. Transits: transits compare where the planets are now to your fixed natal chart, so your natal chart is the reference frame timing techniques read against.
Our chart methodology in one line
Positions: sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine) (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Framework: Tropical, with a sidereal (Lahiri) option clearly labelled. Houses: Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart). Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer. Read the full approach on our methodology page.
Step by step
- 1
Enter your birth date and exact time
Type the day, month and year you were born, and the time as closely as you can find it — a birth certificate is ideal. No time? Use the 'Unknown time' switch; the planets stay accurate and only the houses are flagged approximate.
Tip — Even ±15 minutes matters for the Rising sign, so dig for the exact time if you can.
- 2
Set your birth city and location
Enter your birth place and confirm the latitude/longitude and timezone. We apply the historical daylight-saving and timezone rules for that place and date automatically.
- 3
Tap 'Cast your chart'
The calculation runs instantly in your own browser — nothing is uploaded. Your wheel and placement table appear above the reading.
- 4
Scroll the interpretation
Read the Big Three, the houses, the aspects and your chart indices. Every sentence traces back to a placement you can check in the table.
Tip — Save the chart to this device to reuse your data across the other calculators.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this natal chart calculator free?
- Yes, completely. There is no signup, no email requirement and no paywalled part of the report. The whole chart and reading are free to view.
- Do I need my exact birth time?
- For the most accurate Ascendant and houses, yes. But if you only know the date, you can choose 'Unknown time' — we still compute every planet correctly and simply mark the angles as approximate.
- Is my birth data stored or uploaded anywhere?
- Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. If you use 'Save to this device', it is written to your browser's local storage and never sent to a server.
- Which house system and zodiac do you use?
- We default to the tropical zodiac with Porphyry houses (equal trisection between the four angles), and offer whole-sign houses on every chart. Heliocentric and sidereal views are separate tools.
- How accurate are the planetary positions?
- Positions are computed with VSOP87 planetary theory and the ELP lunar theory — the same class of mathematics behind professional ephemerides. That places every body to well under an arc-minute, far tighter than the interpretation itself could ever depend on.
- Is astrology a science?
- No. The astronomy here is scientific, but the interpretive tradition is not evidence-based. Controlled studies, such as Carlson's 1985 test, have not supported astrological prediction. We present the reading as a symbolic tool for reflection, not a factual forecast.
