What Varuna means in a natal chart
Varuna is minor planet number 20000, found in 2000 under the provisional designation 2000 WR106. It is one of the classical Kuiper belt objects — a dark world orbiting beyond Neptune in a nearly circular path, close to the plane of the planets rather than swung far above or below it.
Its name is the Vedic god Varuna: keeper of rta, the cosmic order, sovereign of the sky and the waters, and the power that watches oaths. In the oldest hymns his eye is the sun, and liars feel his net before anything else does.
Modern astrologers borrow the domain as the binding principle: promise, law, integrity and the consequence of bending a vow. Its sign and house say where your order lives; its aspects say what tests it. None of this is a testable claim; the symbolism is labelled clearly as symbolism.
How we compute the Varuna placement
astronomy-engine carries the ten major planets, so Varuna gets its own ephemeris. We ship a table of its orbit sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons between 1850 and 2100. Each row holds the orbital elements at that moment. At your birth time we interpolate the bracketing rows and solve Kepler's equation by Newton iteration.
That gives a heliocentric position. We subtract Earth's place from sub-arcsecond VSOP87 to get the geocentric line of sight, then precess and rotate into the tropical zodiac of your birth date. Varuna's orbit lies close to the planetary plane, so its latitude usually stays small. The path is checked against five JPL anchors, and Varuna lands within about 0.9 degrees.
What you get back
After you enter your birth data and cast the chart:
- The exact sign, degree and house of Varuna in your natal chart, plus its daily motion and whether it runs retrograde.
- Every Ptolemaic aspect Varuna makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, sorted tightest first, with the orb shown.
- A short traditional gloss of Varuna's meaning, so a first-time reader has words for what Varuna opposition the Sun actually claims.
- An honest note on the accuracy of the position, so you know how far you can lean on each aspect.
How to read your Varuna placement
Read Saturn first, because the planet already owns law, limit and time. Varuna enters one lane further: the oath specifically — the promise that binds the person who makes it. Its house names the field where your word is given.
Then take the aspects as tests of the bond. Links to the Sun and Moon touch character and feeling; links to Neptune touch truth and its dilution. Because Varuna crawls through the zodiac over decades, contacts inside orb are rare and readers weigh them heavily.
Reading the Varuna placement
Sign colours the kind of order. Varuna in a water sign binds through feeling and loyalty; in a cardinal sign the oath is an act that starts things. The house is where the net is strung: the twelfth for private vows, the eighth for bonds signed with another's name on them.
Aspects are the audits. Varuna opposition the Sun reads as the tradition's test of integrity — identity and promise forever facing each other. Varuna sextile Saturn is order meeting order, the cleanest bond in the set. An unaspected Varuna keeps the vow entirely your own, untested by the rest of the chart.
A worked example, with real numbers
Take a birth at 17:30 on 1 January 2000 in London. Our solver places Varuna at 8.60 degrees of Cancer, in the twelfth house, retrograde at about 0.02 degrees a day. Its contacts are an applying sextile to Saturn at 1.80 degrees and an applying opposition to the Sun at 2.01 — a bond of duty squared by a bond of identity.
In this tradition that pairing reads as private oaths: twelfth-house promises made in feeling, in the sign of home and lineage, with Saturn approving the arrangement and the Sun standing directly opposite, insisting the vow be met in daylight.
A second chart, cast for 12:30 on 15 July 1990 in Berlin, puts Varuna direct at 27.49 degrees of Gemini in the eighth house, conjunct Venus applying at 3.06 degrees. The same distant lawgiver there reads as a signed and spoken bond — the promise written into shared resources and affection, an air-sign oath made of words.
What this tool does not claim
The position is a two-body Kepler propagation of JPL osculating elements, not a full n-body integration. For a Kuiper belt world the drift is slow and the five-anchor JPL check keeps the shipped table inside about one degree across the whole 1850 to 2100 span.
Varuna symbolism belongs to living Vedic tradition, borrowed by modern astrology. We present it as a borrowed image, not an inheritance. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.
Varuna against Saturn, Jupiter and Orcus
Saturn keeps structure and Jupiter keeps the social contract; Varuna is used for the older, total bond — the oath the cosmos itself witnesses. Readers reach for him when a chart shows promises that outlast the person who made them.
His asteroid-era neighbour Orcus completes a pair: Varuna the oath, Orcus the penalty for breaking it. The two sit in the same distant band and, in the tradition's hands, read as one institution — the vow and its enforcer, split across two worlds.
Our method in one line
Osculating elements for (20000) Varuna, sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons (DE441) and propagated with a Newton-solved Kepler solver to your birth instant. Earth comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Aspects use the Ptolemaic set with a six-degree outer orb. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.
Step by step
- 1
Enter your birth data
Date, exact time and place. Varuna moves slowly, so the degree stamps the era.
- 2
Cast the placement
Varuna lands in sign, degree and house against your natal chart.
- 3
Scan the aspects
With a body this slow, any contact inside orb is worth the paragraph.
- 4
Find the oath
Read the house as the field where your binding word is given.
Tip — Compare Varuna with Saturn. Structure and promise often govern the same house.
Frequently asked questions
- What is Varuna in astronomy?
- Varuna is minor planet 20000, a classical Kuiper belt object discovered in 2000. It orbits beyond Neptune in a nearly circular path close to the planetary plane. It is named for the Vedic sky god who guards cosmic order.
- What does Varuna represent in astrology?
- Modern astrologers read Varuna as the binding principle: oath, law and integrity, with consequence held in reserve. Its house names where promises bind you, and its aspects show what tests the bond.
- Who is Varuna in Vedic tradition?
- A major deity of the oldest layer of the Vedas: sovereign of the sky and waters, keeper of rta — the order of things — and the watcher of oaths, whose eye was said to be the sun. The borrowing by modern astrology is just that: a borrowing.
- How accurate is the Varuna placement here?
- Within about one degree across the 1850 to 2100 range, and closer near the present day. We propagate real JPL elements with a Kepler solver and check five anchors. Every orb we report is wider than that residual, so the aspects are stable.
- Is the meaning of Varuna scientifically proven?
- No. Attaching oath-and-order themes to a distant world named from Vedic scripture is modern interpretive tradition, not a measurable effect. We present an accurate position and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism.
