Triplicity Ruler Calculator — The Three Element Lords of Your Chart

Every zodiac sign belongs to an element, and every element answers to three planetary lords: one for day, one for night, and one who always participates. Together they are the triplicity rulers, the oldest layer of planetary dignity after domicile and exaltation. This calculator maps the three lords of your five key points, orders them by your chart's sect, and shows exactly where each lord sits in your wheel.

What triplicity rulers are

The twelve signs form four triplicities, one per element: Fire, Earth, Air and Water. Each triplicity has three ruling planets. Which one sits first depends on whether you were born by day or by night. That day-or-night fact is called the sect.

In the scheme handed down by Dorotheus of Alexandria, the sect lord takes the first seat, the opposite-sect lord takes the second, and the participating lord is always third. All three rule at all times. Sect only reorders them.

Triplicity is one of the five essential dignities, alongside domicile, exaltation, bound and face. A planet that rules the triplicity of the sign it occupies holds real, standing dignity, even in a chart that is otherwise weak.

The Dorothean table we use

Our table comes from the Carmen Astrologicum, the first-century teaching poem of Dorotheus, in David Pingree's translation. Fire answers to Sun by day, Jupiter by night, Saturn as participant. Earth: Venus by day, Moon by night, Mars participating.

Air: Saturn by day, Mercury by night, Jupiter participating. Water: Venus by day, Mars by night, Moon participating. Dorotheus' own worked example names the fire triad exactly so, Sun, Jupiter and Saturn, for a diurnal nativity with the Sun in Aries.

Later authors changed some of this. Ptolemy flipped the day and night lords of Water, and William Lilly inherited that version. We publish the Dorothean scheme because this is a Hellenistic toolset, and we say so plainly wherever it matters.

The tool reads your birth instant against the Sun's position to fix the sect, then lists each element's triad in sect order for your Ascendant, Midheaven, Sun, Moon and Part of Fortune.

What the report returns

For each of the five anchors, plus every body in the chart, the report prints:

  • The anchor's sign and element, so you know which triplicity is in play.
  • The first, second and third lords by your sect, each with the sign and whole-sign house it occupies.
  • A highlight whenever a lord sits in its own domicile or exaltation, the classic strength signal.
  • A role tag for any planet that is itself one of the lords of the element it occupies.

A worked example: a night chart in Cancer

Take a birth at 17:30 UT in London on 1 January 2000. The Sun is below the horizon, so this is a night chart, and the Ascendant falls at 28.8° Cancer, a Water sign.

Dorotheus gives Water the triad Venus by day, Mars by night, Moon participating. Because the sect is nocturnal, Mars takes the first seat, Venus the second, and the Moon stays third.

Where do they live? Mars sits at 28.1° Aquarius in the eighth whole-sign house. Venus sits at 1.8° Sagittarius in the sixth. The Moon herself sits at 16.1° Scorpio in the fifth.

Note the bonus detail our table flags. The Moon occupies a Water sign and is Water's participating lord, so she wears two hats: resident and council member. The Midheaven at 3.3° Aries brings the Fire triad into play, led by night by Jupiter, itself standing in Aries in the tenth.

How the tradition read the three lords

Dorotheus judged a nativity by walking its triplicity lords in order. The first lord describes the start of life and the native's vital spirit. The second rules the middle years. The third governs the end, and the quality of each phase follows the condition of its lord.

Condition means placement. A lord in its domicile or exaltation, sitting in an angle, is strong. A lord cadent, peregrine or beset by the malefics drags its phase down. In our example chart the nocturnal first lord Mars occupies an eighth-house, mutable-air position: workable, not exalted.

The same three-lord walk also powers the time-lord techniques. Zodiacal releasing, distributions through the bounds and the sections of the years all hand the timeline to the triplicity lords in turn. Getting to know your three lords is therefore the entry fee to the whole Hellenistic clock.

Practically, read your own triad as three co-guardians of your element. Wherever each one sits, that house and sign become the address where your elemental life-crew operates.

What this tool does not claim

Triplicity tables are a tradition, not a physics. Several ancient schemes exist, and the Dorothean and Ptolemaic versions disagree on Water and on the participators. We compute exactly one scheme and name it; comparing against software that ships the Ptolemaic table will give different lords by design.

The sect judgment here is astronomical: the Sun's altitude at the birth instant decides day or night. Very coarse birth times near sunrise or sunset can flip the sect, and with it the entire first-and-second-lord ordering.

The houses shown are whole-sign houses counted from the Ascendant's sign, the frame the classical technique assumes. They will differ from the quadrant houses printed on your natal chart page.

Our method in one line

Positions come from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine), read through Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart). The triplicity table and sect ordering are asserted in our automated probe, alongside a check that the three lords of every element never change membership between sects. Every worked-example figure is reproduced by that probe. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Date, time and place. The tool fixes your sect from the Sun's position at the instant.

  2. 2

    Read the five anchors

See the sect-ordered triad for your Ascendant, Midheaven, Sun, Moon and Fortune.

  3. 3

    Locate each lord

Sign and whole-sign house tell you where each guardian of your element actually lives.

  4. 4

    Check for highlighted lords

Tip: a lord in its own domicile or exaltation is the strongest single good-news marker the tradition recognizes.

Frequently asked questions

What are triplicity rulers in astrology?
Triplicity rulers are the three planetary lords assigned to each element: one for day charts, one for night charts, and one participating lord. They form one of the five essential dignities, and a planet holding triplicity has standing strength in every sign of its element.
What is sect, and why does it reorder the lords?
Sect is whether you were born between sunrise and sunset, a day birth, or between sunset and sunrise, a night birth. In the Dorothean scheme all three lords always rule, but the sect lord takes the first seat and the other yields to second place.
Which triplicity table does this calculator use?
The table of Dorotheus of Alexandria, as translated by David Pingree. It differs from the later Ptolemaic table used by many medieval and modern authors, most visibly in Water, where Dorotheus gives Venus by day and Mars by night.
How is Dorotheus' table different from Ptolemy's?
Ptolemy simplified the scheme and flipped several assignments, and his version reached William Lilly and most modern dignity tables. For Water, Dorotheus seats Venus by day with the Moon participating, while Ptolemy seats Mars by day. Neither is a mistake; they are two transmitted systems.
Do the triplicity lords change during my life?
The lords themselves are fixed for your element and sect, but classical time-lord techniques visit them in sequence. Distributions and zodiacal releasing hand the running of your life to the first, then second, then third lord, which is why their condition matters so much.
Does this tool store or upload my birth data?
Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Every sect judgment and lord lookup is computed inside your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to or kept on any server.
