What an annual profection is
Your Ascendant is age 0. One solar year later, the chart has 'profected' — the sign after your Ascendant takes the 1st-house position for that year, and its traditional ruler becomes the lord of the year, the Time Lord. At age 12 the whole zodiac has turned once and your Ascendant sign is back at the start of the cycle.
The profected sign also names a house of your natal chart: whatever natal house that sign originally occupied is the stage for the year. A year profecting to the sign in your 10th is traditionally read as a public, career-front year — regardless of what transits are doing. It is a one-question technique: what is this year for?
How we compute it
Profection counts from the Ascendant's exact degree, not a birthday: the first turn happens when the Ascendant's degree plus 30° is reached, i.e. (30° − Ascendant degree) months after birth. This tool advances the Ascendant's absolute longitude by one sign per solar year from that instant, so the table reflects your actual rising degree, not a rounded approximation.
Rulers follow the classical seven-planet scheme — Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius, plus the Sun and Moon — the system pre-dating Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Your Time Lord's natal sign and house are then read straight from your computed chart (sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine)).
What you get
After entering your birth data:
- This year's card: profected sign, the natal house it activates, and your Time Lord with its glyph.
- The Time Lord's natal placement — sign, house and the traditional reading of that combination.
- A 12-year table you can page through from birth to age 120, each year showing sign, house and lord.
- Your current year highlighted wherever the table is showing it.
How to read the year from three facts
Stack the layers in order. The profected sign gives the year's costume — its element, modality and archetype. The activated house gives the stage: which area of life the year is mostly about. The Time Lord gives the actor — and where that planet sits in your natal chart tells you the style and resources it brings. A Leo year profecting the 5th, ruled by a Sun in Sagittarius in the 9th, is traditionally read as creative play with a wide-angle, travel-tinted cast.
Practitioners add two checks: the lord's own condition (dignity, house, aspects in the natal chart — our natal calculator lists essential dignities), and whether the lord's sign itself is being profected back (the cycle returns every 12 years — age 12, 24, 36… revisit your rising-sign year). The 36th birthday in particular closes the first full profection cycle, which is why it reads as a threshold year.
A worked example, with real numbers
Take the 1 January 2000, 17:30 UTC London chart with Ascendant 28.8° Cancer. Because the rising degree is near the end of Cancer, the first profected year turns early — about 1.2 months after birth. At age 28 the calculation lands the year in Scorpio, which occupies this chart's 5th house, making Mars the Time Lord.
Advance the dial: age 32 profects to Pisces in the 9th with Jupiter as lord, and age 36 returns the Ascendant itself — Cancer, the 1st house, Moon as Time Lord — the classic first-cycle close. For a 5 May 1990, 13:15 UTC New York chart (Ascendant 12.9° Cancer), the same age-36 year also arrives in Cancer in the 1st house: the technique is geometric, so charts with similar ascendants turn together.
What this tool does not claim
Profection is a traditional symbol with no tested predictive mechanism — controlled evaluations of astrology (including the Carlson 1985 double-blind study cited below) have found none. It is best used as a yearly reflection prompt: what theme do I want to work with this year, and where in my chart does its lord live?
The technique also depends on your Ascendant, hence on birth-time accuracy. With an unknown time we flag the output as approximate; your sign-level placements are unaffected. Everything computes locally in your browser.
Profections vs firdaria, zodiacal releasing and solar returns
Annual profections advance one sign per year and take 12 years to cycle. Firdaria divides life into seven longer planetary chapters, opening on the sect light — its own calculator covers that technique. Zodiacal releasing uses the same sign-stepping logic but with sign-length chapters of years to decades — see its dedicated calculator. The solar return is a real chart for a real moment. A standard annual reading uses profection for the theme, the solar return for the setting, and transits for the triggers.
Our method in one line
Ascendant-absolute-degree profection arithmetic with classical seven-planet rulerships, the lord read from a sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine) natal chart. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.
Step by step
- 1
Enter your birth data
Date, time and place — the Ascendant's exact degree sets when your first year turns.
- 2
Read this year's card
Profected sign, activated house and Time Lord, with the lord's own natal placement beneath.
- 3
Browse the full life table
Page twelve years at a time from 0 to 120; your current age is highlighted.
- 4
Check the cycle turns
Every 12th year returns to your Ascendant sign — practitioners treat 12, 24, 36, 48… as threshold years.
Tip — Compare this year's Time Lord with last year's: the handover between lords is where the technique is felt most.
Frequently asked questions
- How is the profected year calculated?
- Count the Ascendant's absolute degree forward 30° per solar year since birth. The sign reached is the year's ruling sign; the natal house that sign occupies is the year's stage; the classical ruler of the sign is the Time Lord. Because it starts from the exact rising degree, your first 'birthday' in this system can fall before your actual birthday — sometimes by up to a year.
- What does the Time Lord actually mean for me?
- Not a planet 'controlling' your fate — it is the ruler of the year's sign, so the year is read through that planet's condition in your chart. A year under Mercury as lord, with natal Mercury in the 3rd, is traditionally a communication-heavy year; the same year with Mercury in the 9th reads more like study, travel and big-picture messaging.
- Why use classical rulers and not modern ones?
- Profection is a Hellenistic technique and its logic is built on the seven-planet rulership scheme (Saturn also rules Aquarius, Mars also rules Scorpio). Traditional practitioners keep that pairing deliberately; we follow the source technique rather than blending in Uranus/Neptune/Pluto.
- Do profections work with an unknown birth time?
- Partially. With an approximate time the profected sign can still be right, but a rising degree near a sign border makes it a coin-toss, so we flag approximate results. Sign-level readings of the Time Lord's placement stay valid regardless.
- Is my birth data private?
- Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Profections are computed locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
