What the Sun–Moon midpoint is
The Sun–Moon midpoint is the single degree sitting halfway between your Sun and your Moon, measured along the shorter arc between them. It blends your core identity with your inner needs, so tradition treats it as the hinge where will and feeling meet. In midpoint astrology it stands for the root question of self versus need.
A midpoint is a calculated point, not a body. Nothing physical sits there. Its significance is interpretive, part of a symbolic system, and we compute it to the same precise degree we would compute a planet.
How we find it
We cast each chart from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine), then locate the Sun and the Moon by ecliptic longitude. The midpoint is the longitude exactly between them on the shortest path around the circle. We take care with the wrap at 360° so a Sun and Moon on either side of 0° Aries still give a sensible answer.
For two people, we do three things. We find each person's own midpoint. We check whether the two midpoints form an aspect within orb. And we compute a coupling midpoint — the degree halfway between your two midpoints — as a shared reference point.
Getting the most from it
Start with your own midpoint sign and degree. Notice which sign and house it lands in, since that is the setting where your identity and emotions have to compromise. Then look across at your partner's.
The aspect between your two midpoints is the relational layer. The coupling midpoint is best read by where it falls in either of your charts, which tells you the shared territory the pairing tends to create. Notice the sign and house of each person's own midpoint as well. That combination is the daily style in which someone reconciles what they want with what they need, and when the two styles sit in similar signs the reconciliation tends to feel effortless.
What you get
The calculator returns:
- Each person's Sun–Moon midpoint, by sign and degree.
- The Sun and Moon positions those midpoints were derived from.
- The aspect, if any, that the two midpoints form, with its orb.
- The coupling midpoint sitting between your two hinges.
- The shortest-arc logic applied on the raw longitudes, so a wrap through 0° Aries never distorts the result.
A worked example
In the first test chart, the Sun is near 10.6° Capricorn and the Moon near 15.8° Scorpio. The shortest arc between them puts their midpoint at 13.2° Sagittarius. The second chart has its Sun near 22.8° Cancer and Moon near 23.3° Taurus, giving a midpoint of 8.0° Gemini.
Those two midpoints, Sagittarius and Gemini, sit 174.8° apart — an opposition, about 5.2° wide of exact. So the two people's head-and-heart hinges face each other across the zodiac. The coupling midpoint between them lands near 10.6° Pisces.
A third test chart, with the Sun almost at 0° Aries and the Moon in early Taurus, shows the wrap working cleanly: its midpoint falls at 15.6° Aries, right between the two.
Reading the aspect between two midpoints
When your midpoints aspect each other, the two people's deepest self-reconciliations are in conversation. A soft link, like a trine, tends to read as instinctive understanding of each other's core rhythm. A hard link, like a square or opposition, reads as two ways of balancing head and heart that pull in different directions and have to be negotiated.
Keep the scale honest. One midpoint aspect is a single thread, not a whole relationship. It is one precise, meaningful degree, and it deserves to be read alongside the rest of the synastry rather than as a verdict on its own. The coupling midpoint is the quietest of the three results, and the easiest to overread. Treat it as one shared coordinate worth locating in a chart, not as a fixed pronouncement about a fate.
Midpoint versus composite chart
A composite chart takes the midpoint of every matched planet pair to build a whole new chart for the relationship. This tool is far more focused. It uses only the Sun and Moon of each person, then relates the two resulting points.
The advantage is clarity. You get one loaded hinge per person and a direct comparison, without the interpretive weight of a full composite chart. For many couples the Sun–Moon midpoint alone captures the central story of identity meeting need.
What this tool does not claim
The astronomy is exact; the meaning is not. Midpoint astrology is a symbolic discipline, best known through twentieth-century writers, and its claims have no empirical support. We present the midpoint and its aspect as a lens for reflection, clearly labelled.
Birth time matters here only modestly. The Sun and Moon move by date, and the Moon is the faster of the two, so a midpoint derived from two dates stays accurate to roughly a degree even without exact times. It is computed entirely in your browser and never leaves your device.
Our method in one line
Two independent natal charts (sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine)); each Sun–Moon shortest-arc midpoint, its inter-person aspect and the coupling midpoint, all on the same math the composite chart uses. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

- 1
Enter your birth details
Your date, time and place, used to cast your Sun and Moon precisely.
- 2
Enter your partner's details
Their date, time and place, giving the second Sun and Moon pair.
- 3
Find the midpoints
Both hinges, their aspect, and the coupling midpoint appear instantly in your browser.
- 4
Place the coupling midpoint
Note which sign and house it occupies in either chart.
Tip — That house is where the shared hinge tends to play out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does the Sun–Moon midpoint mean?
- It marks the compromise point between your conscious identity and your instinctive needs. Astrologers read it as the degree where who you are on purpose meets who you are emotionally. Its sign and house describe the style and setting of that inner negotiation.
- How is a midpoint different from an aspect?
- An aspect is an angle between two real points, like two planets. A midpoint is a calculated single degree halfway between two points. Once you have it, though, you treat it like a point and can ask what it aspects, including what your midpoint aspects on your partner's chart.
- What is the coupling midpoint?
- It is the degree sitting exactly halfway between your two personal Sun–Moon midpoints. Midpoint practitioners read it as a shared reference point for a couple. Because it comes from both hinges, it only exists when you compare two charts, never from one alone.
- Do I need an exact birth time?
- Not for the basics. The Sun and Moon positions behind this midpoint depend almost entirely on the birth date, so your midpoint is accurate to about a degree even with an unknown time. That is unlike house-based tools, which need a precise time for the Ascendant.
- Is my birth data private?
- Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Each chart, both midpoints and the coupling point are calculated locally on your device, and no birth data is ever uploaded, stored, or shared.
