Sedna in Your Natal Chart — Free Calculator

Sedna is one of the most distant named worlds in the sky, an object whose year lasts longer than human civilisation. Astrologers read it as the far edge of belonging — provision, initiation and the cold that feeds. This calculator places (90377) Sedna for your birth instant.

What Sedna means in a natal chart

Sedna is minor planet number 90377, found in 2003 as 2003 VB12. Its orbit is one of the strangest known: a thousands-of-years ellipse that carries it so far from the Sun that astronomers call it a detached world. Its year dwarfs every empire's lifespan.

It is named for the Inuit sea goddess — the figure of the cold deep who, when honoured, feeds the hunters and, when slighted, withholds. Modern astrologers use Sedna for that double image: the far, cold source of provision, and the initiation that only happens at the edge of comfort.

In practice the body marks what you cannot warm quickly: deep ancestral or identity material, belonging negotiated against distance. None of this is a testable claim; the symbolism is labelled clearly as symbolism.

How we compute the Sedna placement

astronomy-engine carries the ten major planets, so Sedna gets its own ephemeris. We ship a table of its orbit sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons between 1850 and 2100. Each row holds the orbital elements at that moment. At your birth time we interpolate the bracketing rows and solve Kepler's equation by Newton iteration.

That gives a heliocentric position. We subtract Earth's place from sub-arcsecond VSOP87 to get the geocentric line of sight, then precess and rotate into the tropical zodiac of your birth date. The path is checked against five JPL anchors, and Sedna lands within about 0.9 degrees.

What you get back

After you enter your birth data and cast the chart:

  • The exact sign, degree and house of Sedna in your natal chart, plus its daily motion and whether it runs retrograde.
  • Every Ptolemaic aspect Sedna makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, sorted tightest first, with the orb shown.
  • A short traditional gloss of Sedna's meaning, so a first-time reader has words for what Sedna square Uranus actually claims.
  • An honest note on the accuracy of the position, so you know how far you can lean on each aspect.

How to read your Sedna placement

Treat Sedna like a super-outer voice, slower than Pluto. It spends years in one sign, so its sign describes a whole stretch of generations and its house describes where your personal cold source sits. The degree, not the sign, is the personal part.

Then look for aspects to the natal planets, especially the personal ones. Because Sedna crawls, a tight contact is rare and readers weigh it heavily. The orbs printed here decide the difference: inside three degrees is structure, beyond four is a generational hum.

Reading the Sedna placement

Sign sets the climate of the theme. Sedna in Taurus, where it sat for the turn of the twenty-first century, puts provision, body and resources at the far edge — a slow, material initiation. The house names the territory where the cold source is kept.

Aspects are the contact points. Sedna square Uranus reads as the edge theme triggered by rupture or awakening; Sedna opposition the Moon as belonging split between home and the deep. An unaspected Sedna keeps the theme at full distance: a winter star everyone in the chart can see but nobody touches.

A worked example, with real numbers

Take a birth at 17:30 on 1 January 2000 in London. Our solver places Sedna at 15.36 degrees of Taurus, in the eleventh house, retrograde at about 0.005 degrees a day — half a hundredth of a degree, the crawl of a world with a millennia-long year. Its contacts are unusually alive: an applying square to Uranus at 0.54 degrees and an applying opposition to the Moon at 0.71, with a wide conjunction to Saturn at 4.97 behind them.

In this tradition that reads as the far-source theme running straight through the personal chart — friendship and belonging (the eleventh house) pressed by sudden awakening and pulled against emotional need. The tightness of both orbs is what gives the reading its weight.

A second chart, cast for 12:30 on 15 July 1990 in Berlin, still finds Sedna in Taurus — at 11.60 degrees, in the seventh house — trine Neptune at 1.32 degrees and opposition Pluto at 3.40. Same sign, different decade, different station: the partnership field now carries the cold source, soothed by faith and measured by power.

What this tool does not claim

The position is a two-body Kepler propagation of JPL osculating elements, not a full n-body integration. For a body as distant as Sedna the method is gentle with it — its motion is slow and its perturbations shallow — and the five-anchor JPL check holds the shipped table inside about one degree everywhere.

Sedna symbolism belongs to living Inuit culture, borrowed by modern astrology. We present it as a borrowed image, not an inheritance. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.

Sedna against Pluto, Eris and Haumea

In the far-object set each body keeps a domain: Pluto the generational underworld, Haumea the fertile deep, Eris the quarrel at the edge, Sedna the cold provider. Readers use the four as a vocabulary for what feels vast and slow in a chart, and weigh degrees over signs.

Astronomically Sedna out-distances all of them on average. Pluto never leaves the planetary neighbourhood; Sedna's orbit takes it so far out that sunlight reaches it as a bright star rather than a lamp. That fact is the whole reason the tradition calls it the far edge.

Our method in one line

Osculating elements for (90377) Sedna, sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons (DE441) and propagated with a Newton-solved Kepler solver to your birth instant. Earth comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Aspects use the Ptolemaic set with a six-degree outer orb. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Date, exact time and place. Sedna barely moves, so the degree is a stamp of the era.

  2. 2

    Cast the placement

Sedna lands in sign, degree and house against your natal chart.

  3. 3

    Scan the aspects

Tight contacts are rare with a body this slow, and the orbs show when you have one.

  4. 4

    Weigh it honestly

Read the sign as generational and the degree as personal.

Tip — Compare Sedna's house with Saturn's. Limit and far-source often annotate the same field.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sedna in astronomy?
Sedna is minor planet 90377, discovered in 2003. It follows one of the most distant known orbits, taking thousands of years to circle the Sun. It is named for the Inuit goddess of the sea and the cold deep.
What does Sedna represent in astrology?
Modern astrologers read Sedna as the far, cold source: provision, belonging and initiation at the edge of comfort. Its house locates the territory and its rare tight aspects mark where the theme touches the personal chart.
Why do Sedna readings mention generational themes?
Because it spends years in each sign, like the slower planets but further still. Its sign therefore describes a whole era of births, and only the degree and aspects are personal. That is how every super-outer body is weighed.
How accurate is the Sedna placement here?
Within about one degree across the 1850 to 2100 range, and closer near the present day. We propagate real JPL elements with a Kepler solver and check five anchors. Every orb we report is wider than that residual, so the aspects are stable.
Is the meaning of Sedna scientifically proven?
No. Borrowing an Inuit goddess's name for a distant world and attaching initiation themes to it is modern interpretive tradition, not a measurable effect. We present an accurate position and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism.
