What the Sabian symbols are
Divide the ecliptic into 360 one-degree slices, starting at 0° Aries, and give each slice an image. That is the Sabian system: symbol 1 is the first degree of Aries, symbol 360 the last of Pisces, and any planet in your chart falls on exactly one of them.
The modern list comes from 1925, when the astrologer Marc Edmund Jones and the medium Helene Elsie Wheeler sat in Sabina, California, and produced a verse for each degree. Their 1952 book made the system famous — and its wording is still in copyright, which is why you will find many nearly identical paraphrases online and one honest alternative here.
Our set is written from scratch in the same formal style — a concrete image per degree, never borrowed sentences. The degree arithmetic, by contrast, is not a matter of taste: your Sun's degree is whatever the ephemeris says it is, and this tool reads it off the same verified chart engine as everything else on the site.
How your symbols are found
The lookup is one line: take the tropical longitude of the point — your Sun, Moon or Ascendant — drop the decimal part, and you have an index from 0 to 359. Add one and you have the symbol number. A Sun at 10.6° Capricorn sits at 280.6 degrees around the wheel, which is index 280: symbol 281.
That is the whole computation, which means the only thing that can go wrong is the position underneath it — and that position comes from the site's ephemeris, checked against published tables across the whole tool set.
The shipped probe, B15, guards three things: the table holds exactly 360 non-empty images, the index behaves at the boundaries (0° Aries is symbol 1, the last sliver of Pisces is symbol 360, and longitudes past 360 wrap to the start), and a real chart's Sun index lands in the right sign block.
What you get back
Cast the chart and the report shows:
- The Sabian symbol on your natal Sun — the degree the tradition treats as the core life theme.
- The symbols on your Moon and your Ascendant, each with its image, number and exact degree.
- Where each symbol sits: its degree of the 360, which of the twelve sign passes it belongs to, and its number within that sign.
How to read your three symbols
Start with the Sun symbol and treat it as an image to sit with, not a sentence to decode. Ask what the picture is actually doing: who is moving, what is being carried, what is at stake. Two people born the same week in the same sign will have different Sun degrees, and the images differ precisely where the sign description blurs everyone together.
Then read the Moon symbol as the interior weather — what the picture looks like from inside, at night, unguarded — and the Ascendant symbol as the doorway: how the theme first meets the world.
A useful discipline: read all three together and describe, in your own words, what changes as the eye moves from one image to the next. That movement is the actual content of the system.
Worked examples with real numbers
A birth at 17:30 in London on 1 January 2000 puts the tropical Sun at 280.60° — 10.6° Capricorn — which is symbol 281: “A goat climbing past the shepherd, on the way to salt.”
The same instant places the Moon at 226.08°, 16.1° Scorpio: symbol 227, “A wine pressed hard enough to stain the stone.” The Ascendant stands at 118.81°, 28.8° Cancer — the 29th degree, the threshold — carrying symbol 119: “A door left unlocked for one expected return.”
In Berlin, 12:30 on 15 July 1990, the Sun at 112.77° reads symbol 113, “A house that remembers every family it sheltered,” while the Ascendant at 0.5° Scorpio has barely crossed the cusp: symbol 211, “A seed splitting its husk in the dark of soil.”
Sydney, 09:00 on 20 March 1988, is the edge case the probe exists for: the Sun at 29.97° Pisces sits 0.03° from leaving the zodiac entirely, landing on symbol 360 — “Completion: the last symbol folded into the first breath of spring.” Two systems agree in that one image.
What a degree adds that a sign cannot
Signs are seasons; degrees are moments within them. Someone with the Sun at 1° Aries and someone at 29° Aries share the sign's vocabulary but stand at opposite ends of its thirty-degree arc, and the Sabian images treat them differently — a first step outward versus a threshold about to close.
Interpreters also like symbol relationships: shared sign passes, oppositions (a number plus 180), or the classical five-point configurations. Because our numbering is anchored to 0° Aries like the original, every such relationship between two degrees is plain arithmetic you can verify with a calculator.
Sabian symbols against other degree systems
The Sabian system is the most popular degree library in Western astrology, but it is not the only one. Decanic readings cut each sign into three; anaretic degree lore zooms in on the 29th degree alone; term bounds slice signs into unequal ancient spans. All of them key off the same fact this tool computes: your exact tropical degree.
Where the older systems describe conditions — dignity, timing, texture — the Sabian set is pure image: one picture per degree, no rulerships attached. It stacks cleanly with any of them, because it adds an address, not a new argument.
What this tool does not claim
The images shipped here are our own authored set, written in the classical style, because the 1952 wording remains in copyright. If you look up your number in a book of the traditional verses you will read different sentences describing the same degree — both are legitimate; only the number is shared.
There is no tested evidence that a degree carrying a particular image corresponds to any observable outcome. The system is a contemplative symbolism with a documented history, and we present it as exactly that. What is verified is the position underneath: probe B15 pins the indexing and the 360-entry table.
Our method in one line
Symbol number = floor(λ_tropical) + 1, counted from 0° Aries over the ephemeris Sun, Moon and Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart) Ascendant; the 360 images are original text authored for this site. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.
Step by step
- 1
Enter your birth data
Date, time and place. The Ascendant degree shifts roughly two degrees every four minutes, so an accurate birth time matters more here than the sign-level tools.
- 2
Read the three images
Sun, Moon and Ascendant symbols appear together with their exact degrees and numbers.
- 3
Sit with the pictures
Describe each image to yourself in plain words before reaching for any interpretation — the tradition is meant to be contemplated, not decoded.
- 4
Compare the arithmetic
Add 180 to any symbol number to find its opposite-degree image, or check which sign pass your three symbols share.
Tip — If the Sun lands within a tenth of a degree of a sign boundary, note both numbers — Sabian lore reads the 29th–30th degrees as thresholds.
Frequently asked questions
- Which Sabian symbols should I look at first?
- The convention in the literature is to start with the Sun symbol — the degree your Sun occupies — as the core theme, then add the Moon for the emotional register and the Ascendant for the way the theme presents itself. Other planets carry symbols too; this tool shows the three that define a chart's backbone.
- Why are your symbol texts different from the ones I've seen?
- The classic 1952 verses by Jones and Wheeler are still under copyright, so no site may freely reproduce them — many online versions are paraphrases of unclear provenance. We authored a complete original set of 360 images in the same formal style instead, and say so plainly. The degree numbers are identical to any system; the sentences are ours.
- Does my symbol change if I use sidereal astrology?
- Yes. The Sabian system counts tropical degrees from the vernal equinox, so this tool uses tropical longitudes. A sidereal chart moves every position back by the ayanamsa — roughly 24 degrees today — which is about 24 symbol numbers. Both frames are coherent internally; mixing them silently is the only mistake.
- What if a planet sits exactly on a degree boundary?
- Our convention is that symbol N covers the span from N−1 degrees to N degrees measured from 0° Aries, so a Sun at 10.0° Capricorn opens symbol 281. At an exact whole degree, some books count the degree being left rather than entered; we state floor-based indexing and apply it everywhere.
- Are Sabian symbols scientifically real?
- No empirical support exists for the claim that a one-degree slice of the ecliptic shapes a life. What is objectively true is your planet's position, which this tool computes and probes. The symbols are a historical contemplative system — useful as language for reflection, presented here as symbolism, not prediction.
