The three natal keys to relating
In traditional astrology the 7th house — the descendant, directly opposite the Ascendant — is the house of partnership: marriage, open contracts, and the qualities we meet reflected in a significant other. Its cusp sign colours what you seek there, and the planet that rules that sign (its 'lord') shows which area of life the relationship theme actually plays out in.
Two personal planets finish the picture. Venus is affection, attraction and values — how you give and receive love and what you find beautiful. Mars is drive, desire and assertion — how you pursue what you want and handle conflict. Together the 7th house, Venus and Mars describe the relational wiring you carry into any synastry chart later.
How we compute it
We cast your natal chart with sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine), read the sign on the 7th-house cusp and its classical ruler, and list any planets occupying the 7th. Venus and Mars are placed by sign and house, and we pull the aspects each one makes so you can see how those two drives are integrated with the rest of the chart — including how Venus and Mars aspect each other.
The house positions use the Porphyry system from your exact birth time; the 7th cusp is simply the point opposite your Ascendant. With an unknown time we estimate the houses from a noon chart, but Venus and Mars always stay exact because they depend only on the ephemeris.
What you get
After entering one birth date, time and place, the report shows:
- Your 7th-house cusp sign and its classical lord — and the house that lord sits in.
- Any planets occupying the 7th house, read as qualities you attract or seek.
- Your Venus placement with its aspects: how you love, and where affection flows or strains.
- Your Mars placement with its aspects, plus the specific Venus–Mars relationship between them.
How the blueprint is traditionally read
The 7th-house cusp sign is read as the 'complement' you're drawn to: a Cancer rising (Capricorn descendant) chart is classically said to seek steadiness and maturity in a partner, whatever it expresses in itself. The lord's house then says where partnership reality is lived — career, home, daily work, the wider world.
Venus and Mars are read as two different appetites. Harmonious aspects between them (trine, sextile, conjunction) are described as feeling and desire working as one; hard aspects (square, opposition) as a productive tension between what you love and what you go after. None of this predicts any particular relationship — it is a vocabulary for the pattern you bring.
A worked example: born 1 January 2000, 17:30 UTC, London
This chart rises at 28.8° Cancer, so the 7th cusp sits at 28.8° Capricorn — partnership cast in a serious, committed, slightly late-blooming key. Capricorn's classical lord is Saturn, and here Saturn falls in Taurus in the 10th house, retrograde: relating, on this reading, is bound up with public life, build and security, and approached cautiously.
Two planets occupy the 7th itself — Uranus and Neptune, both in Aquarius — colouring the partner-image with originality and idealism. Meanwhile Venus sits in Sagittarius in the 5th house (affection through adventure and play) and Mars in Aquarius in the 8th (drive channelling into depth and causes), and the two form a wide square (about a 3.7° orb): the classic 'love and pursuit pull at right angles' tension the tradition flags as growth through awareness.
What this tool does not claim
This is a one-person reading of your relational template. It deliberately does not forecast a partner, a match score, or any outcome — that would be prediction the evidence does not support. For the two-chart technique, our Synastry and Composite tools build on these same placements.
Like all natal astrology, these are symbolic interpretive traditions with no controlled validation; the astronomy is exact but the meanings are offered purely for reflection. All computation runs locally; your birth data never leaves your browser.
Where it sits next to other readings
Our Synastry Chart and Composite & Davison tools compare this template against a real partner's chart. This page is the single-chart foundation they both rely on — your own 7th house, Venus and Mars before any second person enters the picture. Once you know your own wiring, synastry tends to read more clearly, because you can tell whether a hard aspect is stirring up an existing 7th-house theme or arriving as genuinely new material.

Step by step
- 1
Enter one birth record
Date, time and place — the 7th-house cusp is opposite your Ascendant, so the houses need a birth time.
- 2
Read the 7th house
Start with the cusp sign and its lord: the flavour of partnership you seek, and the life-area it plays out in.
- 3
Compare Venus and Mars
Note each planet's sign and house, then look at how the two relate — that aspect is your love-versus-desire dynamic.
- 4
Take it into synastry
Use this as your baseline before comparing charts. Tip: an occupied 7th house is often the loudest relationship signal in a natal chart.
Frequently asked questions
- What does the 7th house mean in astrology?
- The 7th house is the descendant — the point directly opposite your Ascendant — and traditionally rules committed one-to-one relationships: marriage, business partnerships, and the qualities we experience as 'other.' Its sign describes what you seek there, its ruling planet shows where partnership life actually unfolds, and any planets inside it colour the partner you attract.
- What's the difference between Venus and Mars in relationship astrology?
- Venus is the principle of attraction, affection and values — what you find beautiful and how you give and receive love. Mars is desire, drive and assertion — how you pursue and how you handle friction. Tradition reads the two as complementary appetites, and the aspect between them as how well feeling and wanting cooperate.
- Can I read my relationship potential from just my own chart?
- You can read your relational template — the pattern you bring — from one chart, which is exactly what this tool does. Compatibility between two specific people needs both charts, which is the job of our Synastry and Composite tools. Nothing here predicts a partner or an outcome.
- What if my 7th house is empty?
- An empty 7th house is completely normal and not a bad sign. You simply read partnership through its cusp sign and its ruling planet (and any aspects to them) rather than through a resident planet. Our tool tells you the lord's placement so there's always something to read.
- Is my birth data private?
- Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Your placements and aspects are computed locally; nothing is uploaded or stored.
