What Quaoar means in a natal chart
Quaoar is minor planet number 50000, discovered in 2002 as 2002 LM60 by a team that included the astronomers who later found Pluto-crossing worlds by the hundred. It orbits in the Kuiper belt, and at roughly a thousand kilometres across it is large enough to have been debated as a planet.
Its name is the creator deity of the Tongva people, the Indigenous nation of the Los Angeles basin — the figure who sang and shot an arrow into the darkness, and from that act the world took shape. Modern astrologers borrow the image directly: Quaoar marks aimed making, the order you shoot into unformed things.
In practice the body is read as a signature on work and legacy: what you set in motion that outlives the setting. Its sign and house locate the aim; its aspects list the instruments. None of this is a testable claim; the symbolism is labelled clearly as symbolism.
How we compute the Quaoar placement
astronomy-engine carries the ten major planets, so Quaoar gets its own ephemeris. We ship a table of its orbit sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons between 1850 and 2100. Each row holds the orbital elements at that moment. At your birth time we interpolate the bracketing rows and solve Kepler's equation by Newton iteration.
That gives a heliocentric position. We subtract Earth's place from sub-arcsecond VSOP87 to get the geocentric line of sight, then precess and rotate into the tropical zodiac of your birth date. The path is checked against five JPL anchors, and Quaoar lands within about 0.7 degrees.
What you get back
After you enter your birth data and cast the chart:
- The exact sign, degree and house of Quaoar in your natal chart, plus its daily motion and whether it runs retrograde.
- Every Ptolemaic aspect Quaoar makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, sorted tightest first, with the orb shown.
- A short traditional gloss of Quaoar's meaning, so a first-time reader has words for what Quaoar trine the Sun actually claims.
- An honest note on the accuracy of the position, so you know how far you can lean on each aspect.
How to read your Quaoar placement
Quaoar sits a few years per sign, so read the sign as an era-marker and the house as the personal workshop. The tradition's question is simple: where does your aimed making land? The house answers before any aspect does.
Then weigh the aspects as the chart's approval of the aim. A trine to the Sun or Jupiter reads as creation that finds an audience; a hard link to Saturn reads as the arrow arriving late but true. Contacts inside three degrees carry; looser ones only tint.
Reading the Quaoar placement
Sign colours the aim. Quaoar in Sagittarius makes meaning the target — the arrow shot at belief; in Scorpio it is depth and transformation that get ordered. The house is the field the making reshapes: the fifth for made things, the first for the self as project.
Aspects are the carry of the shot. Quaoar conjunct Pluto reads as creation fused with the theme of power and renewal; Quaoar trine the Sun as the aim agreeing with the identity. An unaspected Quaoar keeps the making private — a project started that only transits will finish.
A worked example, with real numbers
Take a birth at 17:30 on 1 January 2000 in London. Our solver places Quaoar at 7.87 degrees of Sagittarius, in the fifth house, moving direct at about 0.02 degrees a day. Its single contact inside orb is a conjunction to Pluto at 3.59 degrees — wide, so drawn as colour rather than structure.
Read thinly, that pairing marks made things with depth in them: fifth-house creation aimed at the big transformations, with Sagittarius giving the aim a philosophical bow. The wide Pluto orb means the theme hums rather than drives.
A second chart, cast for 12:30 on 15 July 1990 in Berlin, puts Quaoar retrograde at 24.19 degrees of Scorpio in the first house — right on the self — with an applying trine to the Sun at 1.42 degrees and an applying trine to Jupiter at 1.64. There the same distant body reads as a natural-born maker: identity and growth both leaning easily into the aim.
What this tool does not claim
The position is a two-body Kepler propagation of JPL osculating elements, not a full n-body integration. For a Kuiper-belt world the drift is slow and the five-anchor JPL check keeps the shipped table inside about one degree across the whole 1850 to 2100 span.
Quaoar symbolism belongs to Tongva tradition, borrowed by modern astrology. We present it as a borrowed image, not an inheritance. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.
Quaoar against Pluto, Sedna and the fifth house
Quaoar shares the outer band with Pluto and spends decades where personal planets spend months. Against Pluto's generational pressure, Quaoar reads active rather than fated: the tradition gives it the arrow, not the abyss. Its themes rhyme with the fifth house of made things rather than the eighth of fate.
Against Sedna it is almost neighbourly — both sit in the scattered belt, both crawl through signs over years — but their borrowed images face different ways. Sedna is the cold source that must be honoured; Quaoar is the warm act of ordering. Readers pair them to describe what is received and what is sent.
Our method in one line
Osculating elements for (50000) Quaoar, sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons (DE441) and propagated with a Newton-solved Kepler solver to your birth instant. Earth comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Aspects use the Ptolemaic set with a six-degree outer orb. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.
Step by step
- 1
Enter your birth data
Date, exact time and place. Quaoar holds a sign for years, so the degree dates the chart.
- 2
Cast the placement
Quaoar lands in sign, degree and house against your natal chart.
- 3
Scan the aspects
Sorted tightest first, every contact into your personal planets shows with its orb.
- 4
Find the workshop
Read the house as the field your aimed making reshapes.
Tip — Compare Quaoar's house with the fifth. Creation and legacy often share one stage.
Frequently asked questions
- What is Quaoar in astronomy?
- Quaoar is minor planet 50000, discovered in 2002 in the Kuiper belt beyond Neptune. It is about a thousand kilometres wide — large enough that its planet status has been debated. It is named for the Tongva creator deity.
- What does Quaoar represent in astrology?
- Modern astrologers read Quaoar as aimed making: the order you shoot into unformed things, and the work that outlives the worker. Its house names the field, and its aspects show what the personal chart lends it.
- Is Quaoar a planet?
- Astronomically it is a minor planet — a Kuiper belt object, not one of the eight. The IAU gave it the number 50000 in honour of its size and importance. The word planet, honestly, has always been a family quarrel.
- How accurate is the Quaoar placement here?
- Within about one degree across the 1850 to 2100 range, and closer near the present day. We propagate real JPL elements with a Kepler solver and check five anchors. Every orb we report is wider than that residual, so the aspects are stable.
- Is the meaning of Quaoar scientifically proven?
- No. Borrowing a Tongva creator figure for a distant world and attaching creation themes to it is modern interpretive tradition, not a measurable effect. We present an accurate position and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism.
