What Psyche means in a natal chart
Psyche is asteroid number sixteen, and astrologers use it as a symbol for the soul. It points to what you value at the deepest level and to the slow work of becoming who you are. In a natal chart it colours the planets it touches. On its own it is a quiet background theme.
The idea comes from the Greek myth of Psyche, a mortal woman whose love for the god Eros put her through a long series of trials. That story sets the tone. Psyche in a chart is read as the price of growth — the effort a soul makes to mature. None of this is a testable claim. Treat it as a useful vocabulary, not a diagnosis.
How we compute the Psyche placement
astronomy-engine carries the ten major planets, so Psyche gets its own ephemeris. We ship a table of its orbit sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons between 1850 and 2100. Each row holds the six orbital elements at that moment. At your birth time we interpolate the bracketing rows and solve Kepler's equation by Newton iteration.
The result is a heliocentric position. We subtract Earth's own place, taken from sub-arcsecond VSOP87, to get the geocentric line of sight. A precession step and an obliquity rotation bring that into the tropical zodiac of your birth date. The whole path is checked against five JPL anchors, and Psyche lands within about 0.8 degrees.
What you get back
After you enter your birth data and cast the chart:
- The exact sign, degree and house of Psyche in your natal chart, plus its daily motion and whether it runs retrograde.
- Every Ptolemaic aspect Psyche makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, sorted tightest first, with the orb shown.
- A short traditional gloss of Psyche's meaning, so a first-time reader has words for what Psyche conjunct Mars actually claims.
- An honest note on the accuracy of the position, so you know how far you can lean on each aspect.
How to read your Psyche placement
Cast the rest of your chart first, then bring Psyche in as commentary rather than a headline. Note the sign and house, because together they name the arena where your sense of worth and slow soul-growth tend to play out. Write the degree down, since a tight aspect depends on it.
Then scan which planets Psyche contacts and how close each orb is. A contact inside two or three degrees is worth a real paragraph in a reading. One near the six-degree edge is only a faint hint. When you feel unsure, trust the tighter link and leave the loose one out.
Reading the Psyche placement
Start with the sign and house. That sets the stage where your soul-work plays out. Then look only at aspects. An unaspected Psyche is a private theme that rarely shows in daily life. The same Psyche conjunct your Sun or Venus becomes a named motif people can see.
Conventional weight runs from the personal planets down. Psyche touching the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus or Mars reads loudest. Touches to Jupiter and Saturn colour bigger, slower chapters. Contacts to Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are generational and easier to over-read, so hold them loosely.
A worked example, with real numbers
Take a birth at 17:30 on 1 January 2000 in London. Our solver places Psyche at 0.43 degrees of Pisces. It sits near the very start of the sign, moving direct at roughly 0.41 degrees per day. That early-Pisces setting frames the soul-theme as tender and porous.
The aspect list is sorted tightest first. The closest contact here is Psyche squaring Venus at an orb of 1.41 degrees, and that square is applying. Next comes Psyche sextile Mercury at 1.81 degrees, then Psyche conjunct Mars at 2.29 degrees.
So in this chart the soul-theme rides on love and worth, since it squares Venus first. The Mars conjunction adds a driven edge, and the Mercury sextile gives it a way to speak. A reader can weigh which motif has real standing because the orbs are ordered for them.
What this tool does not claim
The position is a two-body Kepler propagation of JPL osculating elements, not a full n-body integration. Real belt motion is pulled by Jupiter and the planets. Near the 1850 and 2100 edges that drift reaches about one degree. Astrological orbs start at two, so no reading here sits on the edge of the error bar.
The meaning of Psyche is interpretive tradition, not astronomy. We ship an accurate sky and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.
Psyche against the rest of the chart
Psyche moves at a steady main-belt pace, crossing a given natal degree every few years. It is therefore a slower voice than Mars or Venus but a faster one than the outer planets. Read it as a recurring theme rather than a headline.
Astrologers most often set Psyche beside the big five in the main asteroid calculator. This tool isolates one body so you can study its sign, house and aspects in detail before folding it back into the wider chart.
Our method in one line
Osculating elements for (16) Psyche, sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons (DE441) and propagated with a Newton-solved Kepler solver to your birth instant. Earth comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Aspects use the Ptolemaic set with a six-degree outer orb. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.
Step by step
- 1
Enter your birth data
Date, exact time and place. The Psyche degree shifts a little every day, so the time matters.
- 2
Cast the placement
Psyche lands in sign, degree and house against your natal chart.
- 3
Scan the aspects
Sorted tightest first, every contact into your personal planets shows with its orb.
- 4
Read the gloss
Each aspect carries a plain-language note, so the placement turns into words you can use.
Tip — An unaspected Psyche is a background theme, not a headline. The aspects are what make it speak.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the asteroid Psyche?
- Psyche is asteroid number sixteen, discovered in 1852 and named for the goddess of the soul in Greek myth. It is a large metallic body in the main belt, and NASA flies a spacecraft to it that launched in 2023.
- What does Psyche represent in astrology?
- Astrologers read Psyche as the soul and its values. It marks what you find deeply worth while and the slow effort of growing into yourself. Its sign, house and aspects describe the style and the triggers of that inner work.
- How accurate is the Psyche placement here?
- Within about one degree across the 1850 to 2100 range, and closer near the present day. We propagate real JPL elements with a Kepler solver and check five anchors. Every orb we report is wider than that residual, so the aspects are stable.
- What if Psyche is unaspected in my chart?
- An unaspected Psyche is a private theme rather than a loud one. It colours how you value things but rarely forces itself into daily events. Most readers treat it as a quiet undertone and wait for transits to activate it.
- Is the meaning of Psyche scientifically proven?
- No. The link between the myth and the personality reading is a modern interpretive tradition, not a testable fact. We present an accurate position in the sky and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism, nothing more.
