Pholus Asteroid in Your Natal Chart — Free Calculator

Pholus is one of the centaurs, the wandering small worlds between Jupiter and Neptune. In myth his torch exposed what was hiding — and then burned beyond putting out. This calculator places (5145) Pholus for your birth instant.

What Pholus means in a natal chart

Pholus is minor planet number 5145, discovered in 1992 as 1992 AD. Astronomers class it as a centaur: an orbit that wanders between Jupiter and Neptune, taking it through the outer solar system on a loop of decades.

In the myth Pholus is the hospitable centaur whose wine-cellar triggers a riot — and whose lit torch, once the chaos starts, cannot be extinguished. Astrologers read him as the exposure principle: the truth that comes out hot, the anger that lights a fuse, the revelation that cannot be un-seen.

The tradition pairs him with the other centaurs — Chiron the wound, Nessus the inheritance — and gives Pholus the sharp end: sudden insight with a burn radius. None of this is a testable claim; we ship an accurate position and label the meaning as symbolism.

How we compute the Pholus placement

astronomy-engine carries the ten major planets, so Pholus gets its own ephemeris. We ship a table of its orbit sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons between 1850 and 2100. Each row holds the orbital elements at that moment. At your birth time we interpolate the bracketing rows and solve Kepler's equation by Newton iteration.

That gives a heliocentric position. We subtract Earth's place from sub-arcsecond VSOP87 to get the geocentric line of sight, then precess and rotate into the tropical zodiac of your birth date. Pholus's orbit is steeply tilted, so its latitude can climb far from the ecliptic. The path is checked against five JPL anchors, and Pholus lands within about 0.8 degrees.

What you get back

After you enter your birth data and cast the chart:

  • The exact sign, degree and house of Pholus in your natal chart, plus its daily motion and whether it runs retrograde.
  • Every Ptolemaic aspect Pholus makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, sorted tightest first, with the orb shown.
  • A short traditional gloss of Pholus's meaning, so a first-time reader has words for what Pholus opposition Uranus actually claims.
  • An honest note on the accuracy of the position, so you know how far you can lean on each aspect.

How to read your Pholus placement

Locate the house first. In the modern tradition it names where the torch is kept: the area of life where truths surface suddenly, and where an unguarded word can start a fire that outlives the argument.

Then read the aspects as the fuel line. Links to Mars and Pluto colour the flash with force; links to Neptune colour it with illusion bursting. Contacts inside two or three degrees are read as live wires; loose ones near the six-degree edge only hint.

Reading the Pholus placement

Sign sets the kindling. Pholus in a water sign exposes through feeling and memory; in a fixed sign the exposure, once it comes, never revises itself. The house states the stage: the fourth is family soil, the eighth is shared secrets, the tenth is public reckoning.

Aspects time the fuse. Pholus square Neptune reads as truth braided with fog — exposure that is also a misreading. Pholus opposition Uranus is the tradition's lightning strike: revelation arriving without appointment. An unaspected Pholus keeps the torch banked, its fire visible only when transits touch the degree.

A worked example, with real numbers

Take a birth at 17:30 on 1 January 2000 in London. Our solver places Pholus at 5.51 degrees of Scorpio, in the fourth house, moving direct at about 0.05 degrees a day. It stands twenty-four degrees north of the ecliptic — far above the flat band the zodiac runs along. Its contacts are an applying square to Neptune at 2.30 degrees and an opposition to Saturn at 4.88.

In Scorpio, in the house of roots, the tradition reads that placement as buried family material with a long fuse: the square to Neptune says what surfaces is partly seen through water, the wide Saturn opposition says the structure eventually answers back.

A second chart, cast for 12:30 on 15 July 1990 in Berlin, puts Pholus at 7.24 degrees of Cancer in the eighth house — and catches it in almost exact opposition to Uranus, applying at 0.27 degrees, with a loose opposition to Neptune at 5.68 behind it. There the same slow body reads as the sudden kind: exposure arriving at speed through feeling and shared resources.

What this tool does not claim

The position is a two-body Kepler propagation of JPL osculating elements, not a full n-body integration. Pholus wanders among the giant planets in reality, so the JPL anchor check matters — and it holds the shipped table inside about one degree across the whole 1850 to 2100 span.

The torch is a symbol, not a prediction. Pholus placements describe a tradition about exposure and anger, not events owed to you. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.

Pholus against Chiron, Nessus and Pluto

Within the centaur trio the stories split cleanly: Chiron carries the healable wound, Nessus the gift that keeps poisoning, Pholus the light that will not go out. Readers use the three as one narrative — injury, inheritance, exposure — and see which chapter the chart emphasises.

Against Pluto the difference is scale. Pluto is a planet, a generational slow pressure the culture shares; Pholus, decades to the round trip, reads personal by comparison. Where Pluto names the continent, the tradition lets Pholus name the flare that finally lights it.

Our method in one line

Osculating elements for (5145) Pholus, sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons (DE441) and propagated with a Newton-solved Kepler solver to your birth instant. Earth comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Aspects use the Ptolemaic set with a six-degree outer orb. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Date, exact time and place. Pholus changes sign only every few years, but the degree still needs the date.

  2. 2

    Cast the placement

Pholus lands in sign, degree and house against your natal chart.

  3. 3

    Scan the aspects

Sorted tightest first, every fuel line into your personal planets shows with its orb.

  4. 4

    Read it as symbol

Treat the torch language as description of temperament, not prophecy.

Tip — Check Pholus's latitude figure. It is one of the highest-swung bodies in the whole set.

Frequently asked questions

What is Pholus in astronomy?
Pholus is minor planet 5145, discovered in 1992. It is a centaur — a small world whose long orbit wanders between Jupiter and Neptune. It is named for the centaur of Greek myth who kept the wine and the torch.
What does Pholus represent in astrology?
Modern astrologers read Pholus as exposure and uncontrollable fire: truth that comes out hot, anger with a long fuse, insight that cannot be unseen. Its house locates the stage and its aspects show what feeds the flare.
How is Pholus different from Chiron?
Chiron is the wound that learns to heal; Pholus is the light that cannot be put out. The tradition treats them as chapters of one centaur story — and charts can weigh which chapter the contacts actually activate.
How accurate is the Pholus placement here?
Within about one degree across the 1850 to 2100 range, and closer near the present day. We propagate real JPL elements with a Kepler solver and check five anchors. Every orb we report is wider than that residual, so the aspects are stable.
Is the meaning of Pholus scientifically proven?
No. Attaching exposure-and-anger themes to a centaur named from myth is a modern interpretive tradition, not a measurable effect. We present an accurate position in the sky and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism.
