Persona Chart Calculator — Each Planet as a Sub-Personality in Your Birth Chart

A birth chart isn't one voice — it's ten. The psychological or 'persona' approach treats each planet as an inner character with its own appetite and style: the Sun your core identity, the Moon your emotional child, Mercury your inner communicators, Venus what you love, Mars what you assert, and the outer planets the slower generational currents inside you. This tool puts every planet in turn under the spotlight — its sign, house, dignity, dispositor and aspects — so you can meet each sub-personality on its own terms.

What the persona model is

Instead of reading the chart as one blended personality, the persona approach gives each planet its own 'character' — a sub-personality with a distinct motivation. Your Sun-in-sign describes the hero of the story, but your Moon might be a very different inner figure, and your Mars another. The tradition of inner-planet 'characters' runs from psychological astrology through the sub-personality models of the late 20th century.

Three concrete facts we compute exactly define each character. The sign it wears gives its style, the house it acts from gives its stage in life, and its essential dignity shows how comfortably it can be itself there. Its aspects are the relationships this sub-personality has with the others in the chart.

How we compute it

Pick any of the ten bodies and we pull its full natal data from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine): sign and degree, house (Porphyry), essential dignity (domicile, exaltation, detriment, fall or neutral), and its classical dispositor — the ruler of the sign it occupies. We then list every major aspect made to that planet with orb and applying/separating status.

The dispositor is where this sub-personality naturally asks for direction. A planet hands its expression to the ruler of its sign, so reading the dispositor's own placement tells you who this inner character reports to.

What you get

After entering one birth date, time and place, choose any planet to see:

  • That planet's sign, degree and house — its style and its stage.
  • Its essential dignity by sign: at home, exalted, in detriment, in fall, or neutral.
  • Its classical dispositor and where that ruler sits in your chart.
  • Every major aspect made to it, with orb and whether it's applying or separating.

How to read each sub-personality

Read the sign as the character's temperament, the house as the area of life it naturally operates in, and the dignity as how easily it can be itself there — a planet in domicile or exaltation plays its role with authority, one in detriment or fall has to work harder and more consciously.

The aspects are the relationships between characters. Easy aspects (trine, sextile) mean the sub-personalities cooperate. Hard aspects (square, opposition) mean internal tension you manage consciously. A planet with no tight aspects reads as a lone, self-contained drive.

A worked example: born 1 January 2000, 17:30 UTC, London

Select Mars in this chart and the persona reads: Mars in Aquarius at 28.1°, in the 8th house, at neutral dignity (Aquarius is not one of Mars's own signs), moving direct. Its classical dispositor is Saturn — the traditional lord of Aquarius — which here sits retrograde in Taurus in the 10th house. So this 'assertive' character takes its direction from patient, building, publicly-oriented Saturn.

The aspects tell you who Mars argues with. It forms a wide square to Venus in Sagittarius (about a 3.7° orb) — the classic tension between this chart's Mars-drive and its Venus-values, exactly the kind of inner-relationship the persona model is built to surface. Every degree and aspect here comes straight from the ephemeris and the standard Porphyry house split.

What this tool does not claim

The sub-personality framing is a psychological and traditional metaphor, not a clinical model of the mind — there's no empirical support for literal inner 'characters' or for natal astrology generally. We use classical (seven-planet) rulerships for the dispositor so the reading stays internally consistent with the traditional dignity system.

Planet signs, degrees, essential dignities and aspects are exact from the ephemeris. Only the house positions need a birth time (with an unknown time we estimate the houses from a noon chart). All computation runs locally; your birth data never leaves your browser.

Where it sits next to other readings

Our Natal Chart shows all ten placements and the full aspects table at once. The Persona Chart is the same data, zoomed to one planet at a time with its dignity and dispositor made explicit — a slower, character-by-character tour of the same exact chart. For the whole-sign dignity framework see the Traditional Chart. Used together the three run from broadest to most granular: the whole chart, the dignity system, then one inner character at a time.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter one birth record

Date, time and place — time lets us place each character in its house with confidence.

  2. 2

    Pick a planet

Use the planet buttons to select any of the ten bodies as the sub-personality under the spotlight.

  3. 3

    Read the character card

Note its sign (temperament), house (stage) and dignity (how at home it is), plus the dispositor it reports to.

  4. 4

    Tour the rest

Move through the other planets and notice which aspects link them. Tip: start with your Sun, Moon and the planet ruling your Ascendant (its classical lord), then meet the harder-aspected planets last.

Frequently asked questions

What are the sub-personalities in astrology?
The persona (or sub-personality) model treats each of the ten natal bodies as a distinct inner character with its own drive: the Sun as core identity, the Moon as the emotional self, Mercury as the communicator, Venus as the lover, Mars as the warrior/assertor, and Jupiter through Pluto as larger, slower currents. Reading them one at a time turns a blended chart into a cast of cooperating — and sometimes competing — figures.
What does a planet's dignity tell me about that persona?
Essential dignity is how comfortably a planet can be itself in the sign it occupies. In domicile (its own sign) or exaltation it plays its role with ease and authority; in detriment or fall (the opposite signs) it has to work harder and more consciously, often over-compensating. 'Neutral' means neither boosted nor strained. It's the character's level of natural confidence.
What is a dispositor and why does it matter here?
A planet borrows the tone of its sign, so it takes direction from that sign's ruling planet — its dispositor. For a sub-personality, the dispositor is the character it looks to for permission and style. We use classical rulers (so Aquarius defers to Saturn, Pisces to Jupiter) to keep this consistent with traditional astrology.
What if one of my planets has no aspects?
A planet that makes no tight major aspects is read as a lone, self-contained drive — pure and unblended, sometimes hard to integrate with the rest of your personality because nothing in the chart 'talks' to it. It's a real and interesting placement, not an error.
Is my birth data private?
Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Every planet is read locally from your natal positions; nothing is uploaded or stored.
