Overcoming Calculator — Paroxhma and Epiloxhma in Your Chart

Overcoming is the directional sibling of aversion. When two signs square, one of them is ahead of the other in the zodiac order. The one ahead succeeds the target. The one behind precedes it. The tradition called these two cases paroxhma and epiloxhma. This calculator splits every positional square in your chart by direction.

Two kinds of overcoming

Paroxhma is the square that comes after. A body sits three signs ahead of the target, in the natural zodiac order. Because it stands in front, it is said to succeed the target and press forward against it.

Epiloxhma is the square that comes before. A body sits three signs behind the target. Because it stands behind, it is said to precede the target and hem it in from the past.

Both cases are hard rays. Both are square by sign. The difference is directional, and it changes the reading. A succeeding square pushes into the target from ahead. A preceding square crowds the target from behind.

How we split the two

For every target we count the whole-sign distance d = (body − target) mod 12. If d equals three, the body is three signs ahead and belongs in paroxhma. If d equals nine, the body is three signs behind and belongs in epiloxhma.

Both cases are squares by sign. In fact, they are the two square positions on the twelve-sign wheel, split by direction. Any other distance is not a hard ray at all in this tool's model.

We test three targets: the Ascendant, the Sun and the Moon. When the target is the Sun, we exclude the Sun itself from the candidate list. Same rule for the Moon. That prevents a luminary from overcoming itself.

What the report returns

The tool shows a block per target, each split into two panels:

  • The paroxhma list: bodies three signs ahead of the target.
  • The epiloxhma list: bodies three signs behind the target.
  • Each entry shows the body's glyph, name and sign.
  • Empty lists are labeled as none, so you can see the direction that is clear.

A worked example: three targets, three shapes

Take the London chart at 1 January 2000, 17:30 UT. The Ascendant is in Cancer, the Sun in Capricorn, and the Moon in Scorpio. Three signs, three different direction patterns.

Against the Cancer Ascendant, no body sits three signs ahead in Libra. But Jupiter in Aries sits three signs behind Cancer, so Jupiter epiloxma the Ascendant. The self is hemmed in from behind by an expansion-shaped pressure.

Against the Capricorn Sun, the same Jupiter in Aries now stands three signs ahead, so Jupiter paroxma the Sun. The will is pushed from the front by the same body. Same sign relation, opposite direction.

Against the Scorpio Moon, three bodies sit ahead in Aquarius: Mars, Uranus and Neptune. So all three paroxma the Moon. No body sits three signs behind in Gemini, so the epiloxhma panel is empty. The emotional self is crowded from ahead by drive, novelty and dissolution.

Reading the direction

Start with the count on each side. A target crowded ahead by several bodies reads as a future pressing in. A target hemmed behind reads as a past pulling on it. A balanced set on both sides is a kind of tension that never resolves.

Then read each overtaker by name. Mars is friction and drive. Saturn is limit and delay. Jupiter is growth, sometimes excess. Whichever body occupies the averse square shapes what the pressure feels like.

Finally, notice whether the overtaker is a benefic or a malefic. Bonification and maltreatment is the next classical technique along, and it is exactly this benefic/malefic filter applied to the same wheel.

A target with a full paroxhma panel and an empty epiloxhma panel faces its pressure from ahead only. It reads as a life shaped by what is coming at it. The reverse pattern, a crowded epiloxhma and an open paroxhma, reads as a life shaped by what is behind it. Equal panels on both sides is the least comfortable shape of all, because the target is hemmed on each flank by hard rays.

What this tool does not claim

Overcoming is measured on the sign, not on the degree. A body that stands three signs ahead is a paroxhma whether or not the exact degrees form a tight square. This is the classical rule, and it is looser than the modern aspect.

We test three anchors only: Ascendant, Sun and Moon. Some traditions extend overcoming to the Midheaven and to the Part of Fortune. Those extra anchors are covered in the Traditional Chart and Lots pages.

Direction in zodiac order is not the same as direction in time. A paroxhma sits ahead along the ecliptic, not in the future of your life. It is a spatial pattern in the sky, read as a metaphor for pressure.

We also count every body alike, from the classical seven to Pluto. The older sources worked with seven planets only, so a Mars, Saturn or Jupiter overtaker carried the whole story. When a modern outer planet fills a panel, read it as a doubling of the classical theme in its own register, not as a replacement for it.

Our method in one line

Positions come from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine), read through Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart). Overcoming uses the sign-distance test on the whole-sign frame, split by d=3 and d=9. Every worked-example figure is reproduced by an automated probe. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Add date, time and place. The tool loads the three anchors.

  2. 2

    Read the direction panels

Compare the paroxhma and epiloxhma lists for the Ascendant, Sun and Moon.

  3. 3

    Note the empties

An empty panel is information. That side of the wheel is open for the target.

  4. 4

    Add the benefic filter

Tip: pair with the Bonification and Maltreatment page to see which overtakers are friends or foes.

Frequently asked questions

What is overcoming in astrology?
Overcoming is the classical name for a square measured by sign and split by direction. A body three signs ahead of a target paroxmas it (a succeeding square). A body three signs behind epiloxmas it (a preceding square). Both cases are hard rays.
Is overcoming the same as aversion?
They are related but not identical. Aversion names any hard-by-sign pair whose degrees miss the orb. Overcoming is narrower. It only cares about direction, not whether the orb was met. Same-sign square relationships show up in both tools, from different angles.
Which planets count as overtakers?
Every body in the chart, including the modern planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. We exclude the target from its own list, so the Sun does not overcome the Sun. Otherwise all ten placements are candidates.
Can a target have no paroxhma or no epiloxhma?
Yes, and it is common. Empty panels mean no body occupies that directional sign. In our worked example, the Cancer Ascendant has no body three ahead in Libra, and the Scorpio Moon has none three behind in Gemini. That is an ordinary chart shape.
Does this tool store or upload my birth data?
Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Every paroxhma and epiloxhma list is computed inside your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to or kept on any server.
