Orcus in Your Natal Chart — Free Calculator

Orcus is a world beyond Neptune locked in the same orbital dance as Pluto, named for a Roman punisher of oath-breakers. Astrologers read it as the counterweight of the vow: the pact, its binding and its price. This calculator places (90482) Orcus for your birth instant.

What Orcus means in a natal chart

Orcus is minor planet number 90482, first observed in February 2004 as 2004 DW. Astronomically it is a plutino: it shares Neptune's 2:3 orbital resonance exactly as Pluto does — two orbits of Neptune for every three of its own — and it carries a large moon, making the pair a small world system of its own.

The name is Roman: Orcus was a god of the underworld and the punishing of broken oaths — the close cousin of the Greek Hades and of the Erinys who collected debts. Where Pluto borrowed the throne, Orcus kept the bench and the ledger.

Modern astrologers use him as the enforcement layer of the bond: the pact that binds and the consequence that waits. Its sign and house locate where agreements carry weight; its aspects show what tests them. None of this is a testable claim; the symbolism is labelled clearly as symbolism.

How we compute the Orcus placement

astronomy-engine carries the ten major planets, so Orcus gets its own ephemeris. We ship a table of its orbit sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons between 1850 and 2100. Each row holds the orbital elements at that moment. At your birth time we interpolate the bracketing rows and solve Kepler's equation by Newton iteration.

That gives a heliocentric position. We subtract Earth's place from sub-arcsecond VSOP87 to get the geocentric line of sight, then precess and rotate into the tropical zodiac of your birth date. The path is checked against five JPL anchors, and Orcus lands within about 0.6 degrees — the tightest agreement of the whole extended set.

What you get back

After you enter your birth data and cast the chart:

  • The exact sign, degree and house of Orcus in your natal chart, plus its daily motion and whether it runs retrograde.
  • Every Ptolemaic aspect Orcus makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, sorted tightest first, with the orb shown.
  • A short traditional gloss of Orcus's meaning, so a first-time reader has words for what Orcus conjunct Mercury actually claims.
  • An honest note on the accuracy of the position, so you know how far you can lean on each aspect.

How to read your Orcus placement

Orcus stays in a sign for years, so the sign is an era stamp and the house is the personal courtroom. The tradition's question: where do your agreements bind hardest, and what happens there if one is broken?

Then read the aspects as cases before the bench. Links to Saturn weigh duty; links to Mars weigh enforcement; easy links read as pacts kept almost by themselves. Because Orcus crawls, contacts inside orb are rare — weigh the printed orbs, not the novelty.

Reading the Orcus placement

Sign colours the kind of bond. Orcus in a fire sign binds through honour and public word; in an earth sign through contracts and tangible stakes. The house is the jurisdiction: the second is what you owe yourself, the ninth is the sworn belief.

Aspects are the filings. Orcus trine Jupiter reads as the pact the world rewards — enforcement turned to fortune. Orcus conjunct Mercury marks the spoken bond: promises made in exact words, counted in exact words. An unaspected Orcus keeps the ledger closed: obligations nobody else can see, which transits alone may one day reopen.

A worked example, with real numbers

Take a birth at 17:30 on 1 January 2000 in London. Our solver places Orcus at 21.58 degrees of Leo, in the second house, retrograde at about 0.014 degrees a day. It sits nearly seventeen degrees south of the ecliptic. Its one contact inside orb is an applying trine to Jupiter at 3.69 degrees — loose, drawn as colour.

Read thinly, that pairing marks a proud, warm bond with one's own resources: a second-house pact in Leo that Jupiter blesses from a distance rather than drives. The wide orb is exactly why every aspect on this site prints its number.

A second chart, cast for 12:30 on 15 July 1990 in Berlin, puts Orcus direct at 10.76 degrees of Leo in the ninth house, conjunct Mercury applying at 3.95 degrees. The same slow judge there reads as the sworn belief — the oath written into study, travel and speech, still wide but aimed straight at the planet of words.

What this tool does not claim

The position is a two-body Kepler propagation of JPL osculating elements, not a full n-body integration. For a resonant trans-Neptunian world the motion is slow and steady, and the five-anchor JPL check keeps the shipped table inside about one degree across the whole 1850 to 2100 span.

Orcus as avenger is a Roman poem, not a policy. The chart does not prosecute anyone. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.

Orcus against Pluto, Varuna and Saturn

Pluto shares Orcus's exact orbital resonance with Neptune, and tradition split their inheritance the same way: Pluto the underworld's power, Orcus its court — the penalty rather than the throne. Readers cast them together to separate transformation from enforcement.

Beside Varuna the pair becomes one institution: the oath and its avenger, two distant worlds holding opposite ends of the same bond. Saturn, of course, already owns contract and consequence in every traditional chart — Orcus and Varuna are narrower voices, one promise and one verdict at a single degree.

Our method in one line

Osculating elements for (90482) Orcus, sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons (DE441) and propagated with a Newton-solved Kepler solver to your birth instant. Earth comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Aspects use the Ptolemaic set with a six-degree outer orb. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Date, exact time and place. Orcus holds a sign for years, so the degree dates the chart.

  2. 2

    Cast the placement

Orcus lands in sign, degree and house against your natal chart.

  3. 3

    Scan the aspects

With a body this slow, any contact inside orb is worth the paragraph.

  4. 4

    Find the jurisdiction

Read the house as where your bonds carry weight and witnesses.

Tip — Compare Orcus with Varuna. Promise and penalty often sit in the same houses.

Frequently asked questions

What is Orcus in astronomy?
Orcus is minor planet 90482, a trans-Neptunian object first observed in 2004. It is a plutino — locked in the same 2:3 resonance with Neptune as Pluto — and it orbits with a large moon of its own. It is named for the Roman punisher of broken oaths.
What does Orcus represent in astrology?
Modern astrologers read Orcus as enforcement of the pact: oaths, binding agreements and the consequence that follows a breach. Its house names the jurisdiction, and its aspects show what tests the bond.
Is Orcus related to Pluto?
Astronomically, yes — both are plutinos sharing Neptune's 2:3 resonance, and Orcus is sometimes called Pluto's counter-part in orbital terms. In modern astrology they split the domain: Pluto the underworld, Orcus its court and penalty.
How accurate is the Orcus placement here?
Within about one degree across the 1850 to 2100 range, and closer near the present day. We propagate real JPL elements with a Kepler solver and check five anchors. Every orb we report is wider than that residual, so the aspects are stable.
Is the meaning of Orcus scientifically proven?
No. Attaching oath-and-penalty themes to a distant world named from Roman myth is modern interpretive tradition, not a measurable effect. We present an accurate position and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism.
