Nessus Asteroid in Your Natal Chart — Free Calculator

Nessus is one of the centaurs — small worlds roaming between Jupiter and Neptune. In myth he is the giver of the poisoned gift, the act that outlives the giver. This calculator places (7066) Nessus for your birth instant.

What Nessus means in a natal chart

Nessus is asteroid number 7066, discovered in 1993 as 1993 HA2. Astronomically it is a centaur: an icy-rocky body whose orbit wanders between Jupiter and Neptune, crossing the paths of the giant planets. Its name comes from the centaur of the Hercules story.

In the myth Nessus ferries a bride across a river, reaches for her, is struck by the bridegroom's arrow — and from dying hands over a gift: a robe said to secure fidelity. The gift is poisoned. It poisons the whole royal house years later. Astrologers use Nessus for exactly that pattern: harm planted in one generation that surfaces in the next.

That makes it the tradition's marker for inherited poison — passed-on wounds, gifts with strings, behaviours learned and repeated unseen. None of this is a testable claim. We give you an accurate position in the sky and label the meaning clearly as symbolism.

How we compute the Nessus placement

astronomy-engine carries the ten major planets, so Nessus gets its own ephemeris. We ship a table of its orbit sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons between 1850 and 2100. Each row holds the orbital elements at that moment. At your birth time we interpolate the bracketing rows and solve Kepler's equation by Newton iteration.

That gives a heliocentric position. We subtract Earth's place from sub-arcsecond VSOP87 to get the geocentric line of sight, then precess and rotate into the tropical zodiac of your birth date. The path is checked against five JPL anchors, and Nessus lands within about 0.9 degrees.

What you get back

After you enter your birth data and cast the chart:

  • The exact sign, degree and house of Nessus in your natal chart, plus its daily motion and whether it runs retrograde.
  • Every Ptolemaic aspect Nessus makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, sorted tightest first, with the orb shown.
  • A short traditional gloss of Nessus's meaning, so a first-time reader has words for what Nessus conjunct Mercury actually claims.
  • An honest note on the accuracy of the position, so you know how far you can lean on each aspect.

How to read your Nessus placement

Centaurs in modern practice sit between asteroid and planet: slower than any asteroid, more personal than any outer planet. Nessus specifically is read where the chart shows something received and silently repassed — a gift, a habit, a loyalty with a hidden cost.

Its house names the field where the pattern circulates. The aspects then name the carriers: the natal planets the pattern rides on. Tight contacts inside three degrees are where readers say the inheritance is active; loose ones only tint.

Reading the Nessus placement

Sign colours the delivery. Nessus in an air sign passes the pattern through ideas and speech; in a water sign through feeling and relationship. The house is where it circulates — the sixth in daily service, the eleventh through groups, the fourth within family.

Aspects are the mechanism of transmission. Nessus conjunct Mercury reads in the tradition as the story itself being handed down — words carrying the poison. An unaspected Nessus is the quietest version: a current with no visible channel, which readers treat as waiting rather than absent.

A worked example, with real numbers

Take a birth at 17:30 on 1 January 2000 in London. Our solver places Nessus at 2.94 degrees of Capricorn, in the sixth house, moving direct at about 0.08 degrees a day — slow, deliberate, centaur-paced. It sits thirteen degrees south of the ecliptic. Its one contact inside orb is tight: an applying conjunction to Mercury at 0.69 degrees.

In this tradition that pairing reads as the inherited message carried in daily work — a sixth-house Nessus fused to Mercury, so the passed-on pattern moves through instruction, correction and things said at the kitchen table. Capricorn gives it rank: something handed down like an office.

A second chart, cast for 12:30 on 15 July 1990 in Berlin, puts Nessus at 1.18 degrees of Libra in the eleventh house with no aspects at all — an open-handed current with no channel yet. Same distance from Earth, same slow gait, an entirely different structural claim. Unaspected cases like this are the honest limit of what any body can assert.

What this tool does not claim

The position is a two-body Kepler propagation of JPL osculating elements, not a full n-body integration. Nessus actually crosses giant-planet paths, so real perturbations matter more here than for belt asteroids — which is precisely why the JPL anchor check exists, and why the shipped table stays inside about one degree.

The myth is literature, not diagnosis. Nessus placements describe a symbol of passed-on harm, not a fact about your family. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.

Nessus among the centaurs

The centaur set reads as a spectrum from wound to remedy. Chiron is the injury that heals; Pholus is the torch that exposes; Nessus is the gift that corrupts — the one figure in the group whose story is about transmission rather than revelation or mending.

Astronomically the three belong to the same wandering class, and Nessus is the fastest-moving of them in practice, which means its sign changes every few years rather than every decade. Two charts a generation apart can find it in different zodiac signs entirely — a useful reminder that centaurs date a cohort as well as describe a person.

Our method in one line

Osculating elements for (7066) Nessus, sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons (DE441) and propagated with a Newton-solved Kepler solver to your birth instant. Earth comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Aspects use the Ptolemaic set with a six-degree outer orb. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Date, exact time and place. Nessus moves slowly, so the date matters more than the hour.

  2. 2

    Cast the placement

Nessus lands in sign, degree and house against your natal chart.

  3. 3

    Scan the aspects

Sorted tightest first, every carrier of the pattern shows with its orb.

  4. 4

    Read it as symbol

Treat the poisoned-gift language as description, not verdict.

Tip — Compare Nessus with Chiron in the same house. Wound and inheritance often share one field.

Frequently asked questions

What is Nessus in astronomy?
Nessus is minor planet 7066, discovered in 1993. It is a centaur — a body whose orbit wanders between Jupiter and Neptune and crosses the giant planets' paths. It is named for the centaur of Greek myth.
What does Nessus represent in astrology?
Modern astrologers read Nessus as the poisoned gift: harm or habit passed along quietly, often across generations. Its sign and house locate the pattern, and its aspects name the natal planets that carry it.
Is Nessus worse than Chiron?
No — they describe different moments of the same mythic spectrum. Chiron is the wound that becomes a healing skill; Nessus is the injury that keeps travelling after the giver is gone. Neither is a sentence; both are read descriptively.
How accurate is the Nessus placement here?
Within about one degree across the 1850 to 2100 range, and closer near the present day. We propagate real JPL elements with a Kepler solver and check five anchors. Every orb we report is wider than that residual, so the aspects are stable.
Is the meaning of Nessus scientifically proven?
No. Attaching family-pattern symbolism to an asteroid named for a mythic centaur is a modern interpretive tradition, not a measurable effect. We present an accurate position in the sky and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism.
