What a synastry moon phase actually is
A synastry moon phase is the lunar phase that one person's Moon appears to occupy, as seen from the other person's Moon. In a normal birth chart, the Moon's phase comes from its angle to the Sun. Here, your partner's Moon stands in for the Sun. You measure how far their Moon sits ahead of yours around the zodiac.
That single angle is then read on the familiar cycle: 0° is a New Moon between you, 90° is a First Quarter, 180° is a Full Moon, and 270° is a Last Quarter. The calculator reports this phase twice, once from each person's point of view, because the two readings are always different.
How we calculate it
We start with two real natal charts, cast exactly like our standalone calculator. The Moon's longitude in each comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Nothing about one chart depends on the other.
Then we take the directional arc from your Moon to theirs. Directional matters. We keep the full 0–360° range instead of folding it, because folding would erase the difference between a waxing and a waning phase. That arc is the synastry moon phase, read one way.
We flip it and read the same cycle from the other end, which gives the complementary phase. Finally we place each angle in one of eight 45° bins — New, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, and so on. The bins tile the whole circle with no gaps.
Using the calculator
Enter your birth date, time and place, then your partner's. The calculator needs only the two Moons, but we cast full charts so the same data stays consistent across our relationship tools. Birth times only shift the Moon a little, so even rough data gives a useful phase.
Read both columns before you draw a conclusion. The pairing is not one person carrying the emotional weather. It is a cycle with two ends, and each person sits at a different point on it.
What you get back
Once both charts are entered, the tool shows:
- The raw arc between the two Moons, in degrees.
- Their Moon's phase as seen from yours, with the bin name and glyph.
- Your Moon's phase as seen from theirs — the complement.
- A short traditional reading of what each phase tends to describe.
How to read the phases honestly
A Full Moon between you — the two Moons near 180° apart — is the classic mirror. Each person's feelings light up the other's, which can feel clarifying or uncomfortably exposed. A New Moon, with the Moons close together, reads more like emotional alignment: you tend to feel in sync, especially when starting things.
The quarter phases are about momentum. A First Quarter feels like a push to act, while a Last Quarter feels like a release or a wind-down. The gibbous phases sit between, refining or spreading what the peak began.
Treat these as reflective prompts, not verdicts. The phase names a shape in the data. It does not tell you whether the relationship will work.
A worked example
Take two sample charts we use to test the math. In the first, the Moon sits at about 15.8° Scorpio. In the second, the Moon sits at about 23.3° Taurus. The two Moons are roughly 157.4° apart — an almost-Full pairing.
Read from the first person's Moon toward the second, that lands as a Waxing Gibbous phase at 157.4°. Read the other way, it is a Waning Gibbous at 202.6°. The two angles add to 360°, exactly as they must, because it is one cycle seen from opposite ends.
For contrast, another tested pair has Moons only 7.9° apart. That is a New Moon in both directions — near-perfect emotional alignment — while the raw separation is a single small number.
How this differs from moon-sign compatibility
Moon-sign compatibility sorts each person's Moon into one of twelve signs and compares the pair. That is a static label. The synastry moon phase instead measures the exact angle between the two Moons and reads it as a point on a living cycle.
The two approaches are complementary. The signs colour the flavor of each Moon; the phase describes how the two Moons move relative to one another. This tool is purely about that second, geometric layer.
What this tool does not claim
The astronomy is precise, but the meanings are traditional symbolism, not empirical findings. There is no scientific evidence that the angle between two people's Moons predicts how a relationship unfolds. We present the phase as a lens for reflection, clearly labelled as such.
Practically, the Moon moves fast, so a birth time that is off by hours shifts its sign but barely changes a day-level phase reading. If you do not know a time, the numbers still hold to within a degree or two. We compute everything in your browser and never send your data anywhere.
Our method in one line
Two independent natal charts (sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine)), the directional arc between their Moons binned into eight lunar phases, verified against astronomy-engine's own phase search. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.
Step by step
- 1
Enter your birth details
Your date, time and place, used to cast your natal Moon precisely.
- 2
Enter your partner's details
Their date, time and place in the second panel. Rough times are fine here.
- 3
Find the phase between you
The arc, both directional phases, and their traditional reads build instantly in your browser.
- 4
Read both directions
The two phases are complements, not contradictions.
Tip — Whose Moon you start from changes which end of the cycle you occupy.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a synastry moon phase the same as my birth moon phase?
- No. Your birth moon phase is the angle between your own Moon and Sun, a fact about one chart. A synastry moon phase needs two people. It treats one person's Moon as the reference and measures the other's against it, so it describes a relationship, not a single natal chart.
- Why are there two phases instead of one?
- Because the arc has a direction. If their Moon sits 157° ahead of yours, then yours sits about 203° ahead of theirs. Both are true at once, so the calculator shows each person's viewpoint. Reporting a single phase would hide half the picture.
- Do I need exact birth times for this?
- Not very precise ones. The Moon moves around 13 degrees a day, so even a time off by several hours changes its position by only a few degrees. That rarely flips the phase bin. The tool works straight from two dates if that is all you have.
- What does a Full Moon between us mean?
- It means your Moons sit roughly opposite each other, near 180° apart. Traditionally this reads as emotional mirroring, where each person's feelings make the other's more visible. Treat that as a reflective theme, not a prediction, because the interpretation is symbolic rather than scientific.
- Is my birth data private?
- Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Both charts are cast locally, and the two Moons are compared on your own device, so nothing is uploaded, stored, or shared.
