Monomoiria Calculator — The Lord of Each Single Degree

Sign rulers, exaltations, bounds and faces divide the zodiac into ever smaller shares. The tradition pushed one step finer still, assigning a lord to each single degree. That lord is the monomoiria, the ruler of the one-degree slice a planet actually sits in. Surviving Hellenistic horoscopes record it, and later writers used it for timing. This calculator reads your exact degrees and names the planetary lord of each one.

What a monomoiria is

Monomoiria is Greek for the division of a single degree. Each whole degree of a zodiac sign gets its own ruling planet, so a lord of the degree sits one level beneath the face or decan.

The scheme is simple and continuous. The first degree of a sign takes that sign's domicile lord. From there the degrees march through the Chaldean order: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, and then they repeat.

Because a sign holds thirty degrees and the cycle is seven planets long, the pattern wraps about four and a half times. Some planets therefore govern four degrees of a given sign and others five.

A planet's monomoiria is decided by the exact degree it occupies, which is why the calculation depends on precise positions rather than just the sign.

How we assign each degree a lord

We take the sign a body occupies and look up its classical domicile lord. That lord rules the sign's very first degree.

From the first degree we step forward through the Chaldean sequence, one planet per degree, wrapping after the Moon. A placement in the eleventh degree of a sign therefore gets the tenth planet-count ahead of the domicile lord.

Degrees are one-based: the 0 to 1 degree slice is the first degree. This matches how the ancient handbooks numbered them.

Three probes guard the table. The first degree of every sign must equal its domicile lord, the period must be exactly seven, and each sign's thirty degrees must split into groups of four or five. An Aries check confirms the cycle against the source text word for word.

What the report returns

For every placement plus the Ascendant, Midheaven and Fortune, the calculator prints:

  • The body or point and its degree within the sign.
  • Its one-based monomoiria degree, so you can see which slice it holds.
  • The sign, and the planetary lord governing that exact degree.
  • The lord's glyph and name, flagged by natural benefic, malefic or neutral character.

A worked example: the London night chart

Take the same London chart, 1 January 2000 at 17:30 UT. Capricorn rules its first degree by Saturn, its domicile lord, then cycles the Chaldean order.

The Sun at about 10 degrees Capricorn sits in the eleventh degree. Counting eleven steps from Saturn through the sequence lands back on the Sun, so the Sun rules its own degree here.

Mercury, near 2 degrees Capricorn, holds the third degree, which falls to Mars. The Ascendant, close to 29 degrees Cancer, sits in the twenty-ninth degree, and Cancer's first degree belongs to the Moon, so the count lands on the Moon again.

Mars, at 28 degrees Aquarius, sits in its twenty-ninth degree. Aquarius opens under Saturn, and the wrap brings this degree to Saturn too. The full table lists all ten planets plus the three points, thirteen rows in all.

How the lord of the degree was used

The monomoiria added a final refinement to a planet's condition. A body well placed by sign, bound and face could still land on a degree whose lord weakened or strengthened it.

In timing, later practitioners read the degree lord as a sub-ruler of the moment, a planet color events at the finest available resolution within a sign.

The scheme also fed the melothesia and the hour-and-degree magic of the handbooks, where the lord of the exact degree could qualify a whole judgment.

Read alongside the bounds and faces, the monomoiria shows how the ancients kept subdividing the zodiac, hunting for a ruler precise enough to describe a single turning point.

What this tool does not claim

Several degree schemes circulated in antiquity. We use the continuous Chaldean version set out in the commentary on the Berlin horoscope P.Berl. 9825 (Greenbaum & Jones, ISAW Papers 12), which is the best-attested for actual nativities. Other, non-Chaldean degree lists exist and would give different lords.

The result is sensitive to position precision. A degree boundary can move a placement to a different lord, so an uncertain birth time blurs the finest readings.

This is a dignitary layer, not an event predictor. The calculator names the degree lord and nothing more.

Our method in one line

Positions come from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine), cast in Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart), with domicile lords from the classical rulership set. The probe asserts that every sign's first degree takes its domicile lord, that the cycle period is exactly seven, that Aries runs Mars-Sun-Venus-Mercury-Moon-Saturn-Jupiter as the source states, and that each sign's thirty degrees split into fours and fives. Every worked-example figure is reproduced by that probe. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Date, time and place fix each body's exact degree within its sign.

  2. 2

    Locate the one-based degree

The 0 to 1 slice is the first degree; every placement is counted from there.

  3. 3

    Read the degree lord

Each row names the planet ruling that precise monomoiria degree.

  4. 4

    Weigh the finest layer

Tip: compare the degree lord against the bound and face lords for the same body.

Frequently asked questions

What is monomoiria in astrology?
Monomoiria means the lord of a single degree. Each whole degree of a sign is assigned a ruling planet, starting with the sign's domicile lord on the first degree and then cycling the Chaldean order. It is the finest of the traditional divisions of the zodiac.
How is a monomoiria different from a decan or face?
A face, or decan, rules a three-degree third of a sign. A monomoiria rules just one degree. The face is a coarser layer, so a planet can share its decan lord yet differ in its degree lord, adding extra nuance to its condition.
Which order do the degree lords follow?
They follow the Chaldean order, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury and Moon, repeating continuously. The twist is that the count starts on each sign's own domicile lord at the first degree, so the same degree number gives a different planet in different signs.
Does the exact degree really change the ruler?
Yes, and that is the entire point. A planet at 9 degrees and one at 10 degrees of the same sign can carry different degree lords. The technique only makes sense with precise positions, which is why the tool works from ephemeris-accurate degrees.
Are there other degree schemes?
A few competing lists survive from antiquity. We use the continuous Chaldean scheme documented on actual Hellenistic horoscopes, since it is the best-attested for nativities. If you follow a different lineage, its degree lords may not match this table.
Does this tool store or upload my birth data?
Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. The degree-lord lookup runs inside your browser from the same ephemeris engine as every other tool here, and nothing you enter is sent to or kept on any server.
