When Mars is next retrograde
Mars retrograde comes in a steady rhythm of about once every 2.1 years, each time lasting roughly 72 to 81 days, always in the middle of the planet's nearly-two-year journey around the Sun. Its most recent window ran from 7 December 2024 to 25 February 2025 (stationing retrograde in Leo and turning direct back in Cancer); the next arrives from 11 January to 2 April 2027, stationing retrograde in Virgo and turning direct in Leo.
The important, often-surprising fact: there is no Mars retrograde anywhere in calendar 2025 after February, none in all of 2026, and none in 2028. Mars simply skips whole years because its cycle overshoots the 365-day calendar. If a page or post claims 'Mars is retrograde' in a year this tool shows none for, that claim is astronomically false — this calendar is the check.
How we compute it
A retrograde is an illusion of perspective: Earth, on a faster inner track, periodically overtakes Mars, making the red planet appear to move backwards against the fixed stars. We detect each window directly from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine) by scanning Mars's apparent daily motion and recording the two days it flips sign — the first station (direct to retrograde) and the second (retrograde to direct).
The 'which house' overlay takes your natal Porphyry cusps and finds the house Mars occupies at the midpoint of the window. Stations are reported to the day, which is the right precision for a calendar.
What you get
Choose a year and the tool shows:
- A live banner: whether Mars is retrograde right now, or when its next station begins.
- Every Mars retrograde window for that year with exact start and end dates, duration in days, and the signs it stations and turns direct in.
- An honest note when a year has none at all (about half of them don't), pointing you to the adjacent years.
- Optionally, the house of your own chart each window transits, once you add your birth data.
What Mars retrograde traditionally signifies
Mars is the planet of initiative, desire, courage and confrontation; a good Mars retrograde is read not as a shutdown but as an inward turn — the tradition's season to review how you assert, where you've been at war, and what you actually want before charging ahead. Projects that need raw drive can stall or need reworking; conflicts buried can resurface; energy often feels blocked then redirected.
Because it happens only every other year and lasts a couple of months, its effects are considered subtler and more personal than Mercury's frequent retrogrades, and they colour the house it crosses most strongly — a natal-house overlay is where the technique becomes individual. All of this is symbolic tradition, offered for reflection rather than prediction.
A worked example: the 2027 window
Mars stations retrograde on 11 January 2027 at a late Virgo degree and turns direct on 2 April 2027 back in Leo — an 81-day retrograde that wanders from Virgo down into Leo before resuming. In the pattern of every Mars retrograde it covers a stretch of the zodiac it will retrace in the months after turning direct.
Note the two signs it spans: it stations in one sign (Virgo) and turns direct in another (Leo), because during those eleven weeks Mars slips backwards across a sign boundary. Any 'what this means for you' reading begins from where those signs fall in your own chart — which is exactly what the optional house overlay computes.
What this tool does not claim
Mars never physically reverses — the retrograde is an apparent motion from Earth's faster orbit, and this tool reports the appearance honestly. Station dates are detected to the day at a daily scan resolution; a station within hours of midnight UTC could read one day earlier or later in your local timezone.
The 'drive-and-conflict review' narrative is traditional symbolism with no scientific validation, and natal astrology generally is not evidence-based. The astronomy is exact; the meaning is offered for reflection. All computation runs locally; your birth data never leaves your browser.
Mars vs Mercury and Venus retrogrades
Mercury retrogrades three or four times a year for about three weeks each, so it is the familiar recurring pause; Venus retrogrades once every 18 months for around seven weeks (and famously skips whole calendar years too); Mars sits between them — less frequent than Mercury, a touch more frequent than Venus, and the longest of the personal-planet retrogrades at up to about eleven weeks. Our Mercury and Venus retrograde calendars cover the other two.
Step by step
- 1
Pick a year
The windows recompute instantly. If a year shows none, that is real — Mars skips years; move to an adjacent one.
- 2
Read the two stations
Each window lists when Mars stops and turns retrograde, and when it stops again and turns direct, with the signs involved.
- 3
Add your birth data (optional)
Reveal which house of your own chart each retrograde crosses — the area where Martian themes get reviewed.
- 4
Watch the retrace
Remember Mars will re-cover the same degrees after direct as it speeds up again — the retrograde is only the first half of the story.
Tip — If you see a Mars retrograde announced for 2026 or 2028, this calendar shows none exists — a handy fact-check against popular horoscope claims.
Frequently asked questions
- Is Mars retrograde in 2026?
- No. There is no Mars retrograde anywhere in 2026. Mars's cycle of about 2.1 years means its windows straddle the calendar in late-year pairs — the one before 2026 ran to February 2025, and the one after begins in January 2027. Half of all years simply have no Mars retrograde.
- How long does Mars stay retrograde?
- Between about 72 and 81 days — roughly ten to eleven weeks — making it the longest retrograde of the five traditional naked-eye planets' apparent backward seasons relative to how often it occurs. It happens only about once every two years because Mars orbits the Sun at a slower pace than Earth's overtaking cycle.
- What does Mars retrograde actually mean?
- Astronomically it is pure perspective: Earth passing Mars on a faster inner orbit makes Mars look like it moves backwards against the stars for a while. Nothing changes for Mars itself. The astrological meaning — a review of drive, anger, desire and assertion — is a traditional symbolism built on that appearance, not a physical effect.
- Should I avoid starting things during Mars retrograde?
- That is the traditional folk advice — hold off on new confrontations, aggressive launches and impulse decisions, and use the season to rethink strategy instead. We present it as a reflective custom, not a rule: no evidence supports avoiding activities during any retrograde.
- Is my birth data private?
- Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. The optional house overlay runs locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded or stored.
