Makemake in Your Natal Chart — Free Dwarf Planet Calculator

Makemake is a dwarf planet beyond Neptune, a frozen world named for a creator figure of Rapa Nui. Astrologers read it as the maker principle — fertility, rise and the announcement that arrives on wings. This calculator places (136472) Makemake for your birth instant.

What Makemake means in a natal chart

Makemake is minor planet number 136472, discovered in 2005 as 2005 FY9 by the same survey team that has kept redefining the edge of the solar system. It is one of the recognised dwarf planets: big enough to be round, coated in frozen methane, and so far out that a single year spans about three hundred.

It is named for the creator figure of Rapa Nui — Easter Island — the god associated with fertility and with the bird-man ceremonies, where the first tern egg of the season decided who led the year. Modern astrologers borrow the rise-and-announcement image: Makemake marks where making happens and where the news of it arrives.

In practice the body reads as a quiet signature on creation and elevation: fertility in the broad sense, projects hatched, status won suddenly. None of this is a testable claim; the symbolism is labelled clearly as symbolism.

How we compute the Makemake placement

astronomy-engine carries the ten major planets, so Makemake gets its own ephemeris. We ship a table of its orbit sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons between 1850 and 2100. Each row holds the orbital elements at that moment. At your birth time we interpolate the bracketing rows and solve Kepler's equation by Newton iteration.

That gives a heliocentric position. We subtract Earth's place from sub-arcsecond VSOP87 to get the geocentric line of sight, then precess and rotate into the tropical zodiac of your birth date. Makemake swings very far from the ecliptic — latitude past twenty-five degrees is normal for it. The path is checked against five JPL anchors, and Makemake lands within about 0.8 degrees.

What you get back

After you enter your birth data and cast the chart:

  • The exact sign, degree and house of Makemake in your natal chart, plus its daily motion and whether it runs retrograde.
  • Every Ptolemaic aspect Makemake makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, sorted tightest first, with the orb shown.
  • A short traditional gloss of Makemake's meaning, so a first-time reader has words for what Makemake trine Uranus actually claims.
  • An honest note on the accuracy of the position, so you know how far you can lean on each aspect.

How to read your Makemake placement

Makemake holds a sign for several years, so the sign is an era stamp and the house is the personal field. The tradition's question: where does your making hatch, and where does the announcement land? Read the house before anything else.

Then check the aspects for the style of the rise. Trines and sextiles read as elevation that arrives smoothly; hard contacts read as fertility under pressure. Because Makemake crawls, even a loose contact is rare — weigh the printed orbs, not the novelty.

Reading the Makemake placement

Sign colours the making. Makemake in an earth sign hatches things tangible — land, craft, bodies of work; in a fire sign the rise itself is public. The house is the stage: the third for voice and local news, the tenth for elevation in the open.

Aspects are the weather at the hatching. Makemake trine Mars reads as made things that gather speed; Makemake sextile the Moon as announcement met with warmth. An unaspected Makemake keeps the theme in reserve — a maker's mark set on a shelf where only transits can reach it.

A worked example, with real numbers

Take a birth at 17:30 on 1 January 2000 in London. Our solver places Makemake at 16.39 degrees of Virgo, in the third house, retrograde at about 0.006 degrees a day — almost still. It stands more than twenty-nine degrees north of the ecliptic, one of the highest-swung objects in the whole set. Its one contact inside orb is exact-ish: a sextile to the Moon at 0.31 degrees.

In this tradition that pairing reads as quiet, skilful making near the water — Virgo third-house craft whose announcement is met with open warmth, because the tightest body in the chart is the Moon itself.

A second chart, cast for 12:30 on 15 July 1990 in Berlin, still finds Makemake in Virgo — at 4.48 degrees, in the tenth house, direct — with an applying trine to Uranus at 2.48 degrees and an applying trine to Mars at 2.53. Same sign, different station: there the making is public and fast to rise, the two trines reading as invention and drive both leaning behind the elevation.

What this tool does not claim

The position is a two-body Kepler propagation of JPL osculating elements, not a full n-body integration. For a distant dwarf planet the drift is slow and the five-anchor JPL check keeps the shipped table inside about one degree across the whole 1850 to 2100 span.

Makemake symbolism belongs to Rapa Nui tradition, borrowed by modern astrology. We present it as a borrowed image, not an inheritance. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.

Makemake against Haumea, Pluto and the Sun

The dwarf-planet voices split their inheritance cleanly in modern practice: Haumea the fertile mother, Makemake the maker whose rise is announced, Pluto the underworld of whole generations. Readers use the first two for creation in its private and public modes.

Against the Sun the comparison is instructive rather than rivalrous. The Sun is the identity at the centre of the chart; Makemake, a frozen point almost too faint to see, lends the chart its name only as a metaphor. The tradition simply asks which projects of yours rise like birds out of quiet.

Our method in one line

Osculating elements for (136472) Makemake, sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons (DE441) and propagated with a Newton-solved Kepler solver to your birth instant. Earth comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Aspects use the Ptolemaic set with a six-degree outer orb. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Date, exact time and place. Makemake holds a sign for years, so the degree dates the chart.

  2. 2

    Cast the placement

Makemake lands in sign, degree and house against your natal chart.

  3. 3

    Scan the aspects

With a body this slow, any contact inside orb is worth the paragraph.

  4. 4

    Find the hatching

Read the house as the field where making and announcement meet.

Tip — Check Makemake's latitude figure. It rides higher off the ecliptic than almost anything else in the set.

Frequently asked questions

What is Makemake in astronomy?
Makemake is a dwarf planet beyond Neptune, minor planet 136472, discovered in 2005. It is coated in frozen methane, takes about three hundred years per orbit, and has at least one known moon. It is named for the creator figure of Rapa Nui.
What does Makemake represent in astrology?
Modern astrologers read Makemake as the maker principle: fertility, projects hatched and rises announced. Its house names the field of making, and its rare aspects colour how and to whom the news arrives.
Why does Makemake's latitude matter?
Its orbit is steeply tilted, so it often sits twenty or thirty degrees off the ecliptic — far above or below the flat band the zodiac runs along. Signs and houses use only longitude, but the latitude is an honest reminder its true sky place is more three-dimensional.
How accurate is the Makemake placement here?
Within about one degree across the 1850 to 2100 range, and closer near the present day. We propagate real JPL elements with a Kepler solver and check five anchors. Every orb we report is wider than that residual, so the aspects are stable.
Is the meaning of Makemake scientifically proven?
No. Borrowing a Rapa Nui creator figure for a frozen world and attaching maker themes to it is modern interpretive tradition, not a measurable effect. We present an accurate position and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism.
