Lot of Fortune Calculator — Sign, House, Lord and Meaning

The Lot of Fortune is the oldest and most important of the Hellenistic parts. It measures the distance from the Sun to the Moon and projects it from your Ascendant. Traditional astrologers read it as the body, your material circumstances, and the portion of life that simply happens to you. This calculator finds its exact degree, the sign and house it occupies, the planet that rules it, and the natal points that aspect it into activation.

What the Lot of Fortune is

The Lot of Fortune is a derived point, sometimes drawn as a circle with an X inside it. It is not a planet and it emits no physical force. It is a calculated degree that stands for a topic. That topic is the body, material circumstance, and the part of your life shaped by forces outside your direct control.

The ancients called it the Lot of the Moon, because the Moon anchors its formula. Valens treated it as one of the two great luminaries-lots, paired with the Lot of Spirit. Fortune was the more bodily of the two. Where Spirit described what you set out to do, Fortune described what arrived anyway: health, money, luck, the raw facts of the life you were handed.

Because it is built from the Sun and Moon, Fortune moves through every sign across the month. It lands somewhere different in nearly every chart, which is why it felt like an allotment dealt out by chance. The image of a treasure map in its glyph comes straight from that sense of a share you receive rather than choose.

How it is calculated, and why it flips by night

By day, the formula is the Ascendant plus the Moon minus the Sun. You take the arc that runs from the Sun to the Moon, then count that same distance forward from your rising degree. Where you land is the Lot of Fortune. In a night chart the classical authors reverse it: they measure from the Moon back to the Sun instead, keeping the luminaries' sect in mind.

The reason for the reversal is sect. The Sun leads by day and the Moon leads by night, and Fortune is built to always run from the daytime light toward the nighttime light. Flip the sky and you flip the arc. This calculator detects whether your Sun was above or below the horizon and applies the right form automatically, then shows you which one it used.

Once the degree is found, we place it in a whole or quadrant house from your own cusps and name its classical ruler. That ruler is called the lord of the lot, and in traditional reading the lord matters more than the sign itself, because the condition of the lord describes how the topic tends to behave.

What you get back

Cast your birth data and the tool returns the Lot of Fortune with:

  • Its exact degree and zodiac sign.
  • The house it occupies on your chart.
  • The classical ruler of that sign, its lord.
  • The sect note, so you see whether the day or night formula applied.
  • The natal points that aspect it, and how tightly.

Reading your Lot of Fortune

Start with the sign. The sign gives the flavour the material circumstances take. Fortune in an earth sign talks of the body, land, money and practical security. Fortune in a water sign colours fortune with feeling, family and fluidity. Fire makes it about drive and visibility, air about exchange, ideas and networks.

Then follow the lord, because the lord is the sentence and the sign is only the adjective. Find that planet among your ordinary natal placements. Its own sign, house and aspects describe where and how Fortune works out. A lord that is well placed and well aspected suggests circumstances that support you; a stressed lord suggests you have to earn the same ground.

Next, the house the lot itself occupies marks the arena of material life and the body. Fortune in the fourth is a home and inheritance story. Fortune in the tenth is a public and career story. Fortune in the second speaks plainly of money and resources. Fortune on an angle tends to be visible and insistent.

Finally, look for planets sitting on the lot. A conjunction is the strongest signal a lot can get. Benefics such as Jupiter or Venus soften and promise; malefics such as Saturn or Mars bring effort, delay or friction. The activation panel below lists these contacts so you can see at a glance whether your Fortune is being spoken to or left quiet.

A worked example: a night birth in London

Take the chart our verification script measures for 1 January 2000 at 17:30 in London. The Ascendant is 28.81 degrees of Cancer and the Sun is below the horizon, so the night formula applies: Fortune runs from the Moon toward the Sun, projected from the Ascendant.

On this chart the Lot of Fortune falls at 23.33 degrees of Virgo, in the third house, ruled by Mercury. The sign and house already sketch a life where material fortune flows through careful, practical work and through local exchange, writing, teaching or hands-on service, since the third house and Virgo both point there.

Its activation is quiet in the natal chart. The only reference point touching Fortune is a sextile to the Ascendant, about 5.5 degrees away, which gives the lot a low score. A dormant Fortune is not bad news. It tends to mean the theme stays in the background until a transit or a time-lord period reaches that Virgo degree and wakes it up.

The lord tells the rest of the story. Here Mercury, lord of Fortune, is itself placed in the chart, and the whole-sign reading adds that the twelfth-part of Fortune sits at 23.33 degrees of Leo in the second house, ruled by the Sun. That secondary position colours how the material theme eventually expresses, which is exactly the sort of confirmation traditional astrologers wanted before they called anything definite.

What this tool does not claim

The arithmetic is exact and reproducible, but the meaning of a lot is an inherited symbolic convention, not a measured effect. Nothing is emitted from the degree of Fortune. It is a place the tradition agreed to read the body and material life from.

Sources differ on the sect rule. Some later writers never reversed Fortune by night. We follow the majority of the Hellenistic sources and show which form we used, so you can compare against a tradition that disagrees.

The house depends on your birth time. Every lot is projected from the Ascendant, so an uncertain time shifts the degree and can move the lot between houses. If you have no birth time, read Fortune by sign and topic only, and treat the house as unreliable.

Fortune beside its partner, Spirit

Fortune and Spirit are two halves of one measurement. Fortune takes the Sun-to-Moon arc one way, Spirit takes it the other, and between them they always sum to twice the Ascendant. Read Fortune as the body and what befalls you; read Spirit as the mind and what you act upon. The pair frames a life as circumstance and response.

Our method in one line

Fortune is projected from the Ascendant with the shared `computeLot` generator on sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine), using the Hellenistic sect rule, assigned to Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart) cusps and ruled by the traditional domicile table. The worked-example degrees are reproduced by an automated check. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Add your birth date, exact time and birthplace. The time sets your Ascendant, and Fortune is measured from it.

  2. 2

    Check the sect note

The tool tells you whether the day or night formula was used, so you know why the degree is where it is.

  3. 3

    Find the lord

Look up the ruling planet among your natal planets. Its house and aspects describe how Fortune plays out.

  4. 4

    Watch the activation

Tip: a quiet natal Fortune still matters under transit; note the degree so you can catch it waking.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Lot of Fortune the same as the Part of Fortune?
Yes. 'Lot' is the Greek term and 'part' is its later Latin and Arabic translation. They mean the same derived point. Scholars tend to say lot when discussing Hellenistic practice and part when quoting medieval or modern texts.
What does the Lot of Fortune mean in a chart?
Traditionally it stands for the body, health, material circumstances and the share of life shaped by chance rather than choice. You read it through its sign, its house, the condition of its lord, and any planet conjunct it.
Why does my Fortune use a different formula at night?
Because of sect. The classical authors always measured Fortune from the day-light toward the night-light, so the formula flips when the Sun is below the horizon. Our tool detects this and applies the correct form.
What if I do not know my birth time?
Then the Ascendant is unknown, and every lot depends on it. Without a time you can still see the sign and topic of Fortune, but the degree and house will not be reliable.
Does this page store or upload my birth data?
Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. All calculation runs on the spot inside your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to or kept on any server.
