What the Lot of Eros is
Eros is the Greek word for desiring love, the pull toward someone or something you find beautiful or good. As a lot, it marks the place in your chart where that pull operates. It is read for romance and partnership, but just as much for any desire you choose to follow, from a vocation you love to a hobby that grips you.
Valens set great store on the lots of Fortune, Spirit and Eros together. If Fortune is the body and Spirit the will, Eros is the appetite, the vector of want. It was also a timing lot: the three of them anchor Zodiacal Releasing, the ancient periodizer that predicts the theme of a stretch of life.
Because it is one of the principal lots, Eros is treated as genuinely important rather than a minor ornament. Where it sits, what rules it, and what touches it all colour how desire and choice tend to play out.
How it is calculated, and the two ancient formulas
There are two respected classical formulas for Eros, and we use the first. Valens derived the Lot of Love from Fortune and Spirit themselves: by day, take the arc from Fortune to Spirit and project it from the Ascendant. This is the version this calculator casts, because it is the one folded into Zodiacal Releasing and the four-lot system.
The Hermetic tradition, preserved by Paulus, gave a rival formula that runs from Spirit to Venus instead. Both are authentic and both are ancient; they simply come from different schools. We show the formula we used and name the alternative, rather than pretend there is only one Eros.
Whichever arc is taken, the result is then placed in a house from your own cusps and given a classical ruler, the lord of the lot. As with every lot, the lord is where a good part of the reading actually lives.
What you get back
Cast your birth data and the tool returns the Lot of Eros with:
- Its exact degree and zodiac sign.
- The house it occupies on your chart.
- The classical ruler of that sign, its lord.
- The sect note and the formula we applied.
- The natal points aspecting it, and how tightly.
Reading your Lot of Eros
The sign of Eros describes the style of desire. Eros in a water sign longs for depth and merging. In a fire sign it wants excitement and inspiration. Earth desires the tangible and steady, air the conversational and mentally stimulating. Read it as the texture of what you are drawn to.
The house places desire in a field of life. Eros in the fifth is the classic signature of romance, pleasure and creative play. In the seventh it turns overtly toward partnership. In the second it can desire people and possessions alike, and in the tenth it may find its charge in visible work and recognition.
The lord is the deciding factor. Find the ruling planet among your natal placements. Its condition and aspects describe how desire is met, rewarded or complicated. A well-placed lord suggests your wants find decent food; an afflicted one suggests wanting is itself a lesson.
Aspects to the lot finish the picture. A conjunction lights Eros up and makes the theme personal and constant. Benefics sweeten it; malefics add tension or longing that is hard to satisfy. The activation panel lists these contacts so you can weigh them at a glance.
A worked example: a night birth in London
In the chart our verification script measures for 1 January 2000 at 17:30 in London, the Ascendant is 28.81 degrees of Cancer and the birth is nocturnal, so the reversed arc applies to the four principal lots.
The Lot of Eros falls at 17.86 degrees of Scorpio, in the fifth house, ruled by Mars. Scorpio in the fifth is an intense, all-in placement for desire: Eros here wants depth, passion and a little risk, and the fifth house makes romance and creative pleasure a central life theme.
Its activation is meaningful. The Moon sits conjunct the lot, only about 1.8 degrees away, which ties desire, mood and emotional need tightly together. Saturn opposes the lot at a wide orb, adding a note of seriousness, delay or lesson around the same topic. Together they make a desire nature that feels both deeply personal and quietly weighted.
The lord is Mars, which for this chart is placed in the same Aquarius region as several other bodies. Following that lord, and watching transits to the Scorpio degree, is how a traditional astrologer would time when this Eros theme becomes active rather than merely present.
What this tool does not claim
A lot is a symbolic marker, not a measured influence. Nothing is emitted from the degree of Eros. Its meaning is inherited from a long reading tradition, and that tradition is genuinely divided here.
The formula matters. Because Valens and the Hermetic school computed Eros differently, two reputable sources can disagree about where your Lot of Eros falls. We disclose the formula used so you can align this with whichever lineage you follow.
The degree and house depend on your birth time, since every lot is projected from the Ascendant. Without a reliable time, read Eros by sign and topic only.
Eros within the four principal lots
Fortune, Spirit, Eros and Necessity form the core four. Fortune is the body and chance, Spirit the will and action, Eros desire and choice, and Necessity the compulsion that meets you whether you choose it or not. Read as a set they describe a life in motion, pulled by want and bounded by fate.
This page holds Eros alone. See the Lot of Necessity for its mirror, the Arabic Parts calculator for every lot at once, and Zodiacal Releasing for the timing method built on these same points.
Our method in one line
Eros is projected from the Ascendant with the shared `computeLot` generator on sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine), using the Valens derivation from Fortune to Spirit and its sect reversal, assigned to Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart) cusps and ruled by the traditional domicile table. The worked-example degrees are reproduced by an automated check. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.
Step by step
- 1
Enter your birth data
Add date, exact time and birthplace. Eros is projected from the Ascendant, so the time sets the degree.
- 2
Note the formula
The tool shows the Valens derivation it used, so you can compare against the Hermetic version if you prefer it.
- 3
Find the lord
The ruling planet describes how your desires are met or complicated. Study its own placement.
- 4
Read the contacts
Tip: a conjunction, like a Moon on Eros, is the strongest signal that the theme is lived constantly.
Frequently asked questions
- Is the Lot of Eros only about romantic love?
- No. Romance is its clearest expression, but Eros marks desire broadly: what you are drawn to, what you choose, and what gives pleasure. A vocation, an art or a way of living can fill the Lot of Eros as readily as a partner can.
- Why do different websites give different Lot of Eros degrees?
- Because there are two ancient formulas. Valens derived Eros from Fortune and Spirit, while the Hermetic school derived it from Spirit and Venus. Neither is wrong; they belong to different traditions. This page uses the Valens form and says so.
- What does a conjunction to the Lot of Eros mean?
- A planet conjunct Eros makes that planet a co-significator of your desire nature. A benefic such as Venus or Jupiter tends to make it easy and rewarding; a malefic such as Saturn or Mars tends to add longing, delay or intensity.
- How does Eros relate to Zodiacal Releasing?
- Eros is one of the three lots, with Fortune and Spirit, that anchor Zodiacal Releasing. Its sign and the periods that rise from it are used to time stretches of life dominated by desire, relationships and choice.
- Does this page store or upload my birth data?
- Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. All calculation runs on the spot inside your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to or kept on any server.
