Karma & Life Path Calculator — The Lunar Nodes, Saturn and Lilith from Your Real Chart

The four points karmic astrology builds a life-story on — the node axis, Saturn, Lilith and the Part of Fortune — computed astronomically from your birth chart and interpreted with the tradition's own vocabulary.

What 'karmic astrology' actually reads

Mostly one line: the lunar node axis. The nodes are not objects but the two points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic — geometric shadows, exactly opposite each other. Since the mid-20th century astrologers have read them as a compass. The South Node marks the territory you arrive expert in (and over-rely on), while the North Node marks the direction that costs effort but is said to be where the life grows.

Around that axis the tradition stacks Saturn (the task-master — where maturity is earned slowly), Lilith (a refusal to conform) and the Part of Fortune (a classical 'lot' of ease).

This calculator locates all four for your birth instant with real astronomy, gives their signs and houses, and describes the traditional reading — while being straight with you that the interpretive layer is a symbolic tradition, not an established fact about your destiny.

How each point is computed

The node axis uses the mean (synodic) lunar node — the regression of the Moon's orbital plane, computed from its classical period of 18.6 years against sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Mean and 'true' nodes can differ by up to about 1.5° during dragon cycles; we label which one you are getting. The South Node is simply the opposite point, so the axis is always exact by construction.

'Lilith' here is the mean lunar apogee — the averaged far point of the Moon's orbit, a geometric point like the nodes, moving about 40° per year. The Part of Fortune is a classical lot. Ascendant plus Moon minus Sun for day births, reversed for night — so we determine your sect (whether the Sun was above your horizon at birth) from real horizon geometry before choosing the formula.

Saturn is an ordinary ephemeris planet, included because the karmic tradition treats its sign and house as the discipline thread running under the node lesson.

What you get

Once your birth data is entered:

  • Your North and South Nodes by sign and house, with the axis reading — the specific 12 traditions of the journey from one to the other.
  • Saturn's sign, house and retrograde status with its classical 'where maturity is earned' reading.
  • Lilith (mean apogee) and the Part of Fortune by sign and house, each labelled with what they astronomically are.
  • Your four signature indexes (including the Karmic Index) with the aspect arithmetic shown, plus an honest note on what the numbers weigh.

Reading the axis as a story, not a sentence

The classic frame: your South Node sign and house describe gift-turned-grindstone — the competence you default to under stress — while the North Node describes the 'too-hard' muscle. A North Node in Leo in the 1st, opposed by a South Node in Aquarius in the 7th, is traditionally read as a life learning to stand as itself rather than dissolving into the group. The task is stated as generosity toward your own visibility, not as a command to become self-centred.

Saturn then names the discipline required to get there, and Lilith the part of the deal you'll rebel against. Used well, the four placements give you unusually specific vocabulary for patterns you already notice in yourself. Used poorly, they become a horoscope that outsources your choices — which is precisely the thing our disclaimer exists to push back on.

A worked example, with real numbers

For a birth at 17:30 UTC on 1 January 2000 in London, the mean North Node sits at 5.0° Leo in the 1st house, flung directly opposite a South Node at Aquarius in the 7th. This is the 'stand out, then belong' axis at its most literal, with the growth pole falling in the house of identity itself.

The same chart puts Saturn at 10.4° Taurus in the 10th house, retrograde — classically a slow, self-questioning relationship with career and public standing. It has the mean apogee (Lilith) at 23.4° Sagittarius in the 6th, and the Part of Fortune in a night-birth formula (the Sun was below the horizon at 17:30 London in January, so the lot runs ASC + Sun − Moon).

None of this was looked up; it is what the engine returns for those inputs, and it will return something different — correctly — for yours.

What this tool does not claim

There is no evidence for rebirth encoded in nodal charts, and none that lunar-node placements describe past lives or life purpose in any testable way; controlled studies (we cite Carlson 1985 below) have not supported astrological claims generally. 'Karmic' in this tool names a tradition of interpretation, not a mechanism we assert. The readings are offered because the vocabulary is genuinely useful to many people for self-reflection — that is the whole claim.

Astronomically honest caveats: we compute the mean node and mean apogee (a true-node option is on our roadmap). Houses — including where the axis falls — require your birth time, and with 'unknown time' the signs stay exact while houses are marked approximate.

We deliberately do not show Chiron or other minor bodies: our ephemeris doesn't carry them, and we would rather omit a number than fake one. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.

This tool vs. a 'life path number' or past-life reading

Numerology's life-path number reduces a birth date by arithmetic with no astronomical content; commercial past-life readings often assert specific narratives no chart can support. This tool sits deliberately between them: every position below is an ephemeris output you could verify against any professional software, and every sentence of interpretation is framed as what the tradition says, not what happened or will happen. If a karmic tool tells you exactly what you were, it is making that up. We aren't.

Our method in one line

Mean node and apogee from classical orbital periods; sect and Part of Fortune from real horizon geometry at your birthplace; Saturn from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine) with Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart). Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Date, time and place — the time sets your houses, which is where the axis lives.

  2. 2

    Read the axis first

Take the South Node as 'default mode' and the North Node as 'growth edge' — the tradition's actual working pair.

  3. 3

    Add Saturn and Lilith

Saturn names the discipline under the lesson; Lilith names where the arrangement meets resistance.

  4. 4

    Use it retrospectively

The honest test of any karmic frame is whether it describes patterns you can already point to — not whether it forecasts anything.

Tip — Unknown birth time? Signs and the axis itself stay exact; only the house positions are estimates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the north and south node?
They are the same single geometric line seen from two ends: where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic going northward, and the exact opposite point. Astrology reads the north end as growth direction and the south end as familiar talent. Astronomically, neither end 'causes' anything — they are moving reference points, not bodies — which is actually what lets them stay exact even when your birth time is unknown.
Do I have a past life according to this chart?
The tool cannot say that, and no chart can. Rebirth is a metaphysical belief; the node axis's tradition of describing it dates roughly to the 1960s-70s in its popular form. What the axis does provide is a clean, ancient vocabulary for the tension between comfort and growth — plenty of people find that useful without the metaphysics, and we present it that way.
Why is my node reading in the same sign as my friend born years apart?
Because the mean node moves backwards through the whole zodiac in about 18.6 years, roughly 2.5 years per sign. Whole generations share a node sign (ours all sit in Pisces-Virgo until early 2026, for instance) — the tradition treats this as a generational theme, with the house and exact degree personalising it.
Where is Chiron?
Deliberately absent. Chiron is a small body our sub-arcsecond ephemeris doesn't provide, and inventing a position for it would violate the rule we hold for every tool: compute it properly or leave it out. A proper Chiron module is on the engine roadmap.
Is my birth data private?
Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Including the sect check that decides your Part of Fortune formula — all of it runs locally.
