What the Imum Coeli is
The Imum Coeli, usually written IC, is one of the four angles of a natal chart. The angles are the Ascendant, the Descendant, the Midheaven, and the IC. They are the framework of the chart, and they come from your birth time and birthplace rather than from any planet.
The IC is the point where the ecliptic crosses the meridian below the horizon. It is the lowest point in the sky, the nadir. In house terms it is the cusp of the fourth house, the last of the four quadrant starts. If the first house is birth and the tenth is the public peak, the fourth is the deep root beneath it.
Because it is an angle and not a body, the IC moves about one degree every four minutes of birth time. A few minutes of error can shift it across a sign boundary. That is why an accurate time matters more for the IC than for most planets.
How the IC is calculated
The IC is exactly opposite the Midheaven. We compute the MC from your local sidereal time and the obliquity of the ecliptic, then add 180 degrees to reach the IC. The result is a precise zodiac longitude, which we place in a sign and a house.
This holds in any quadrant house system. In Placidus, Porphyry, Koch or Whole-sign the IC is always the fourth cusp, directly across the meridian from the MC. Only the intermediate cusps move between systems, never the four angles.
Once we have the degree, we look for planets that conjunct it within eight degrees. A planet on the IC is a strong signature, because angles are the loudest places in a chart. We also name the sign and its classical ruler, the traditional way to read what the fourth house is about.
What you get back
Enter your birth data and the tool returns your Imum Coeli with:
- Its exact degree and zodiac sign.
- Confirmation that it sits on the fourth-house cusp.
- The opposing Midheaven degree, for context.
- Any natal planets conjunct the IC, tightest first.
- The ruling planet of the IC sign.
Reading your IC
Start with the sign on the IC. The sign colours your private foundation. An IC in Cancer points to home, family and emotional memory as the deep base of the life. An IC in Capricorn builds the foundation through structure, duty and achievement over time. Fire signs warm the roots with vitality and belonging; air signs lighten them with ideas and communication.
Then read the house it shares with the MC. The IC is your foundation; the MC is what you build on top of it. The two always talk to each other. Whatever sign sits on the IC, its opposite sits on the MC, so your private world and your public role are two faces of one axis.
Next look for planets on the IC. A conjunction here pulls that planet into the fourth-house story and makes it feel private and fated. The Moon on the IC deepens the ancestral and emotional theme. Saturn can bring duty, delay, or a heavy home life. Jupiter tends to enlarge and bless the foundations.
Finally consider the ruler. The planet that rules the IC sign shows where the fourth-house energy actually plays out. Find that planet among your placements and read its house and aspects. It is the messenger for your roots.
A worked example: a London evening birth
Take the chart our verification script measures for 1 January 2000 at 17:30 UT in London. The Midheaven is 3.3 degrees of Aries. Adding 180 degrees places the IC at 3.3 degrees of Libra, squarely on the fourth-house cusp.
An IC in Libra makes the home and roots about balance, partnership and peace. The fourth house is about where you come from, and Libra there often colours family life with a search for harmony, or a background of negotiation and diplomacy.
Its ruler is Venus. Following Venus among the natal planets tells you where this fourth-house theme actually operates in the chart. Venus here sits in the fifth house, so the roots express through creativity, pleasure and the heart.
No planet falls within eight degrees of the IC itself, so the angle is quiet in this chart. A quiet IC is not a problem. It simply means the fourth-house theme runs as background until a transit reaches 3 degrees of Libra.
What this tool does not claim
The IC is an angle, so it is a defined geometric point, not an object that emits force. Reading it as a marker of home and roots is a symbolic convention shared across Western astrology, not a measured physical effect.
The degree depends entirely on your birth time. If your time is uncertain, the sign on the IC may be wrong, and with it the whole reading. Treat an estimated time as a warning, not a footnote.
The intermediate house cusps can differ between systems, but the IC itself does not. It is always the MC plus 180 degrees, whatever the house system.
The IC beside the other three angles
The four angles frame the chart. The Ascendant is the self meeting the world; the Descendant is the other; the Midheaven is the public summit; and the IC is the private root beneath it. Each has an opposite, and the IC completes the vertical MC axis.
If you want the full picture, cast the angles together with the rest of the chart. The Imum Coeli is one point, and it reads best against the Ascendant, the Midheaven and the planets that aspect it.
Our method in one line
The IC is derived as the Midheaven plus 180 degrees on sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine), placed in Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart) houses, with conjunctions tested at eight degrees. The worked-example degree is reproduced by an automated check. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.
Step by step
- 1
Enter your birth data
Add your birth date, exact time and place. The IC is an angle, so the time drives it completely.
- 2
Read the sign and house
See which sign sits on the fourth cusp and what its ruler is doing elsewhere.
- 3
Check for planets on the IC
A conjunction here is strong. Note which planet, if any, lands within eight degrees.
- 4
Compare with your MC
Tip: the IC and MC are always opposite, so read them together as one axis.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the Imum Coeli in astrology?
- The Imum Coeli, or IC, is the lowest angle of the chart and the cusp of the fourth house. It marks home, ancestry, the private self, and the emotional foundation you build the rest of life upon.
- How is the IC different from the fourth house?
- The IC is the exact degree where the fourth house begins. The fourth house is the whole 30-degree zone above it. Planets inside the fourth house also describe your roots, even when they sit away from the IC degree itself.
- What does a planet on the IC mean?
- A planet conjunct the IC ties that planet to your home, family and inner life. It makes the planet feel private and fated, and it often marks the core of the fourth-house story, for better or worse.
- Can I find my IC without my birth time?
- No. The IC is an angle, so it moves about one degree every four minutes. Without an accurate birth time you cannot fix its degree, and its sign can shift entirely. The angle needs the time.
- Does this page store or upload my birth data?
- Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Every calculation runs on the spot inside your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to or kept on any server.
