What the hyleg is
The hyleg is the planet that, in the tradition, carries the native's own life-force. It is not chosen lightly. Only a few places in the chart are powerful enough to host it, and the hyleg must be strongly dignified in them.
Those places are the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant, the Lot of Fortune and the degree of the prenatal syzygy. Some authors added the Midheaven; the stricter line excludes it and keeps the five you see here.
The hyleg is whichever classical planet holds the greatest total essential dignity across those places. It is a competition of worth, decided by the familiar five-four-three-two-one count of rulership, exaltation, triplicity, bound and face.
Once found, the hyleg anchors the length-of-life calculation and lends its condition to the reading of vitality, health and sheer presence.
How we choose the hyleg
For each of the five places we run the same almuten tally used for the figure: five points to the domicile lord, four to the exaltation, three to the triplicity, two to the bound and one to the face.
We then add every planet's points across all five places. The classical planet with the highest total becomes the hyleg, and ties resolve in the Chaldean order.
We also flag whether each place is productive, meaning angular or succedent rather than cadent, since cadency was the traditional disqualifier in the fuller aphetic test.
The probes pin the result. Exactly five places must be considered, the winner must be a classical planet with the strictly maximal tally, and the count must agree with our independent dignity tables.
What the report returns
The calculator prints:
- The five hylegical places with their degree, sign, house and productive status.
- The almuten, the best-dignified planet, at each individual place.
- A ranked dignity tally summed across all five places.
- The winning hyleg, its degree, sign, house and angularity, and the sect of the chart.
A worked example: Mars takes the office
Return to London, 1 January 2000 at 17:30 UT, a night chart. The five places are the Sun in Capricorn, the Moon in Scorpio, the Cancer Ascendant, Fortune in Virgo and the prenatal full moon down at an early degree of Cancer.
Tallying dignity across those five points, Mars finishes far ahead with twenty-two points. The Moon follows with seventeen, Jupiter with twelve, Mercury with eleven, Saturn with seven and Venus with two.
So the hyleg is Mars, and it sits at about 28 degrees Aquarius. Aquarius is the eighth whole-sign house from the Ascendant, a succedent place, so the hyleg holds a workable, if not angular, seat.
Mars wins because it rules the exaltation and triplicity positions that recur across these particular degrees. The example alcocoden, Saturn, follows directly from this hyleg; see the companion alcocoden tool for the years.
How the hyleg was read
The hyleg's condition was treated as a barometer of native vigor. A strong, angular, well-aspected hyleg suggested robust vitality, while a weak or afflicted one counselled care.
Its house and sign colored the flavor of that life-force. A hyleg in a personal place read as self-directed; one in a social house read as spent through others and undertakings.
The sect mattered. A hyleg that agreed with the chart's day or night sect was preferred, and traditions that ran the full aphetic test also required the hyleg to escape being cadent or spoiled by combustion.
Because the hyleg feeds the years count through its lord, it also indirectly governed the much-studied question of life length in the older manuals.
What this tool does not claim
This is a documented simplification of the aphetic test. The full classical procedure checks candidates in a fixed priority order, applying qualifications for sect, aspect and combustion one at a time, and stops at the first that passes. We instead rank by summed dignity across the same five places, a transparent and reproducible proxy.
We do not predict lifespan. The hyleg names a symbolic office in the chart; it is not a medical or mortality forecast, and no such use is endorsed.
The syzygy place depends on the prenatal lunation, so an uncertain birth time near a lunation can shift that fifth point.
Our method in one line
Positions come from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine), cast in Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart), and the prenatal syzygy is found by the verified calendar scan. The hyleg is the max of the 5-4-3-2-1 dignity tally summed over the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Fortune and syzygy degrees. The probe asserts the five-place set, the strictly-maximal classical winner and agreement with our dignity tables. Every worked-example figure is reproduced by that probe. Enter your birth data
Date, time and place locate the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Fortune and prenatal syzygy.
- 2
Inspect the five places
Each hylegical point shows its sign, house, productive status and local almuten.
- 3
Read the summed tally
Dignity points are added across all five places, and the highest planet is the hyleg.

Tip: carry the winning hyleg straight into the alcocoden tool to draw its years.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a hyleg in astrology?
- A hyleg is the planet the tradition named giver of life, chosen from a small set of powerful places where the native's vitality was thought to reside. It is the best-dignified planet across the Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Fortune and the prenatal syzygy, and it anchors the old length-of-life techniques.
- Which places can host the hyleg?
- The classical five are the Sun, the Moon, the Ascendant, the Lot of Fortune and the degree of the prenatal syzygy. Some later writers substituted the Midheaven for the syzygy, but the stricter Hellenistic and medieval lists keep the five used here, excluding the Midheaven.
- How do you decide which planet wins?
- We score every planet at each place with the standard dignity count of five, four, three, two and one for rulership, exaltation, triplicity, bound and face. Adding those across the five places, the classical planet with the highest total is the hyleg, ties resolved by Chaldean order.
- Does the hyleg tell me how long I will live?
- No. Any such claim is rejected. In the older manuals the hyleg fed a symbolic years count through its governing lord, but that is a historical technique, not a health or mortality prediction, and this tool makes no such forecast.
- What if the hyleg is weak in the chart?
- A weak or afflicted hyleg was read as a call to care for vitality, not a sentence. Angularity, sect agreement and good aspects strengthen it, while cadency and affliction weaken it. Its sign and house still describe the style in which the life-force expresses itself.
- Does this tool store or upload my birth data?
- Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. The dignity tally and syzygy search run inside your browser from the same ephemeris engine as every other tool here, and nothing you enter is sent to or kept on any server.
