Hygiea Asteroid in Your Natal Chart — Free Calculator

The Hygiea asteroid names the medicine of habit — prevention rather than cure. Astrologers read it as your regimen: the daily routine that keeps the body and life intact. This calculator places (10) Hygiea for your birth instant.

What Hygiea means in a natal chart

Hygiea is asteroid number 10, discovered in 1849 and carried in the catalogue as A849 GA. It is one of the largest bodies in the main belt — the fourth-largest — a dark, ancient rock roughly the size of a small country crossed by sunlight.

Its name is Greek: Hygieia, daughter of Asclepius, the goddess whose domain was not healing a sickness but preventing one. She held the serpent that fed from the bowl of health. Astrologers use the asteroid for exactly that register — regimen, habit, prevention, and the shape of your daily care.

None of this is a testable claim. Goddess-to-habit reading is a modern interpretive tradition. We give you an accurate position in the sky and label the meaning clearly as symbolism — and no placement here is medical advice.

How we compute the Hygiea placement

astronomy-engine carries the ten major planets, so Hygiea gets its own ephemeris. We ship a table of its orbit sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons between 1850 and 2100. Each row holds the orbital elements at that moment. At your birth time we interpolate the bracketing rows and solve Kepler's equation by Newton iteration.

That gives a heliocentric position. We subtract Earth's place from sub-arcsecond VSOP87 to get the geocentric line of sight, then precess and rotate into the tropical zodiac of your birth date. One detail proves the pipeline works: the catalogue lists Hygiea under two spelling variants, and both resolve to the same body. The path is checked against five JPL anchors, and Hygiea lands within about 0.9 degrees.

What you get back

After you enter your birth data and cast the chart:

  • The exact sign, degree and house of Hygiea in your natal chart, plus its daily motion and whether it runs retrograde.
  • Every Ptolemaic aspect Hygiea makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, sorted tightest first, with the orb shown.
  • A short traditional gloss of Hygiea's meaning, so a first-time reader has words for what Hygiea retrograde actually claims.
  • An honest note on the accuracy of the position, so you know how far you can lean on each aspect.

How to read your Hygiea placement

Read the sixth house and Saturn first — the chart already stores routine and discipline there. Hygiea adds the prevention layer: not what heals you after a break, but what keeps you unbroken. Its house names the field of the regimen; its sign names its style.

Then read the aspects as stresses on the routine. A hard link to the Sun or Moon marks habits that collide with identity or feeling; a tight Mars contact marks over-exertion inside the regimen itself. Contacts inside two or three degrees carry; loose ones only hint.

Reading the Hygiea placement

Sign gives the flavour of discipline. Hygiea in an earth sign keeps the routine simply and well; in a mutable sign the regimen changes often and must be re-decided regularly. The house says what the daily care protects — work, home, creativity or belief.

Aspects are the warning lights. Hygiea square Neptune is the tradition's classic blurred boundary — care dissolved by fog, wishful thinking or escapism. Hygiea conjunct Venus reads as regimen sustained by pleasure. An unaspected Hygiea keeps health habits private: self-care that owes nothing to anyone else.

A worked example, with real numbers

Take a birth at 17:30 on 1 January 2000 in London. Our solver places Hygiea at 17.97 degrees of Scorpio, in the fifth house, moving direct at about 0.37 degrees a day. Its contacts are an applying conjunction to the Moon at 1.90 degrees and an applying square to Uranus at 3.16 — feeling braided into the routine, with the nervous system of the chart pulling at it.

A second chart, cast for 12:30 on 15 July 1990 in Berlin, puts Hygiea again in the fifth house, at 23.94 degrees of Pisces — but with a remarkable technical detail: its daily motion there is about 0.02 degrees. The solver has caught the body almost exactly at a stationary point, the hinge of its retrograde loop where it seems to stop before changing direction.

Traditional readers give that pause extra weight, and it is a good example of what an accurate ephemeris adds to interpretation. The Berlin aspects are tight too: a square to Venus at 0.50 degrees, a trine to the Sun at 1.17 and a trine to Jupiter at 1.39 — care held in balance between pleasure and vitality.

What this tool does not claim

The position is a two-body Kepler propagation of JPL osculating elements, not a full n-body integration. Real belt motion is pulled by Jupiter and the planets. Near the 1850 and 2100 edges that drift reaches about one degree. Astrological orbs start at two, so no reading here sits on the edge of the error bar.

No asteroid placement diagnoses, predicts or treats anything. Hygiea's health symbolism is interpretive tradition, not medicine. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.

Hygiea against Chiron and the sixth house

Chiron is the wounded healer — the wound that qualifies you to mend. Hygiea is smaller and drier: no wound required, just the bowl, the serpent and the schedule. Readers use Chiron for healing journeys and Hygiea for the unglamorous maintenance underneath.

The big-five set keeps its own version of this ground too: the sixth house and Saturn already describe routine and limit. Hygiea's claim is narrowness — one degree of one sign where prevention is said to concentrate, which can be compared with the house placement before it is given a paragraph.

Our method in one line

Osculating elements for (10) Hygiea, sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons (DE441) and propagated with a Newton-solved Kepler solver to your birth instant. Earth comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Aspects use the Ptolemaic set with a six-degree outer orb. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Date, exact time and place. The Hygiea degree shifts every few days, so the time matters.

  2. 2

    Cast the placement

Hygiea lands in sign, degree and house against your natal chart.

  3. 3

    Check the motion

Look at the daily motion figure — near zero means a stationary hinge point.

  4. 4

    Scan the aspects

Sorted tightest first, every contact shows with its orb, so stresses on the routine surface.

Tip — Read Hygiea's sign as the format of your habit and its house as what the habit protects.

Frequently asked questions

What is the asteroid Hygiea?
Hygiea is asteroid number 10, discovered in 1849 and the fourth-largest body in the main belt. It is named for Hygieia, the Greek goddess of prevention. Astrologers use it for regimen, habit and daily self-care.
Is it Hygiea or Hygieia?
Both spellings circulate. The minor-planet catalogue registers it as Hygiea, while the goddess's Greek name is Hygieia. Our tools follow the catalogue spelling. Either search finds this page.
What does Hygiea represent in astrology?
Astrologers read Hygiea as the keeping-well layer of a chart: what you do daily to stay intact. Its sign sets the format of the habit, its house the field it protects, and its aspects the pressures on the routine.
How accurate is the Hygiea placement here?
Within about one degree across the 1850 to 2100 range, and closer near the present day. We propagate real JPL elements with a Kepler solver and check five anchors. Every orb we report is wider than that residual, so the aspects are stable.
Can Hygiea tell me if I will be ill?
No. Nothing in a birth chart diagnoses or predicts disease, and asteroid readings around health are symbolic at best. If the page's language ever tempts a medical conclusion, the honest answer is to see a doctor instead.
