What Fama means in a natal chart
Fama is asteroid number 408, a main-belt body carried in the catalogue since the turn of the twentieth century and named for the Roman goddess of rumour. Virgil's Fama is a swift, many-tongued creature — what she spreads is not always true, but it is always already public.
In charts astrologers use Fama for exactly that layer: name, talk, reputation and the story that travels ahead of you. Its sign and house say how your name travels — quietly or loudly, in person or in print. Its aspects say who or what feeds the circulation.
None of this is a testable claim. The goddess-to-reputation reading is a modern interpretive tradition. We give you an accurate position in the sky and label the meaning clearly as symbolism.
How we compute the Fama placement
astronomy-engine carries the ten major planets, so Fama gets its own ephemeris. We ship a table of its orbit sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons between 1850 and 2100. Each row holds the orbital elements at that moment. At your birth time we interpolate the bracketing rows and solve Kepler's equation by Newton iteration.
That gives a heliocentric position. We subtract Earth's place from sub-arcsecond VSOP87 to get the geocentric line of sight, then precess and rotate into the tropical zodiac of your birth date. The path is checked against five JPL anchors, and Fama lands within about 0.8 degrees.
What you get back
After you enter your birth data and cast the chart:
- The exact sign, degree and house of Fama in your natal chart, plus its daily motion and whether it runs retrograde.
- Every Ptolemaic aspect Fama makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, sorted tightest first, with the orb shown.
- A short traditional gloss of Fama's meaning, so a first-time reader has words for what Fama conjunct the Moon actually claims.
- An honest note on the accuracy of the position, so you know how far you can lean on each aspect.
How to read your Fama placement
Read Fama beside the Midheaven, because the MC already describes public standing. Fama is narrower: it is the talk itself, the version of you that exists in other people's mouths. The house it occupies names the arena where your name circulates.
Then scan the aspects. A tight link to Mercury colours how you manage your own story; one to the Moon colours how much feelings leak into reputation. A retrograde Fama is traditionally read as rumour turned inward — being talked about in rooms you do not enter.
Reading the Fama placement
Sign gives the tone of the talk. Fama in a fire sign travels fast and bright; in an earth sign it accrues slowly and sticks. The house places the stage: the third is word-of-mouth circles, the tenth is open public life, the twelfth is hidden or distorted circulation.
Aspects give the mechanism. Fama conjunct the luminaries makes the story personal. Fama square Saturn is read as the reputation that must be earned against friction. An unaspected Fama stays background noise — a name that travels without much grip on events.
A worked example, with real numbers
Take a birth at 17:30 on 1 January 2000 in London. Our solver places Fama at 21.57 degrees of Scorpio, in the fifth house, moving direct at about 0.27 degrees a day. Its only contact inside orb is a loose applying conjunction to the Moon at 5.50 degrees — wide, so drawn lightly.
Read thinly, that pairing simply marks emotional talk: feelings becoming the thing people discuss. A tighter Moon contact would make it central; at this orb it is colour, not structure. That distinction is exactly why we print the orb next to every aspect.
A second chart, cast for 12:30 on 15 July 1990 in Berlin, puts Fama retrograde at 4.05 degrees of Pisces in the fourth house with no aspects at all. The same body there reads as a private, misreported name — rumour folded inward, invisible on the surface. Unaspected cases like this are the honest limit of what any asteroid can claim.
What this tool does not claim
The position is a two-body Kepler propagation of JPL osculating elements, not a full n-body integration. Real belt motion is pulled by Jupiter and the planets. Near the 1850 and 2100 edges that drift reaches about one degree. Astrological orbs start at two, so no reading here sits on the edge of the error bar.
The meaning of Fama is interpretive tradition, not astronomy. We ship an accurate sky and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.
Fama against the Midheaven and Mercury
The MC is your public position; Mercury is your own speech. Fama sits between them as other people's speech — reputation as circulated rather than achieved. Traditional readings reach for it when the question is not what you do but what is said.
The other name-thread is luck: the Part of Fortune tool covers what simply arrives, while Fama covers what is narrated. Casting both separates the thing that happened from the story about it, which is the oldest division rumour ever had.
Our method in one line
Osculating elements for (408) Fama, sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons (DE441) and propagated with a Newton-solved Kepler solver to your birth instant. Earth comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Aspects use the Ptolemaic set with a six-degree outer orb. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.
Step by step
- 1
Enter your birth data
Date, exact time and place. The Fama degree shifts every few days, so the time matters.
- 2
Cast the placement
Fama lands in sign, degree and house against your natal chart.
- 3
Scan the aspects
Sorted tightest first, every contact into your personal planets shows with its orb.
- 4
Weigh the orbs
Read the tight contacts as structure and the loose ones as colour.
Tip — Check the MC too. Fama describes the talk around that position, not the position itself.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the asteroid Fama?
- Fama is asteroid number 408, a main-belt body named for the Roman goddess of rumour and report. Astrologers borrow her domain for it: reputation, talk and the story of you that travels without you.
- What does Fama represent in astrology?
- Astrologers read Fama as circulated name — what is said rather than what is done. Its sign sets the tone of the talk, its house sets the arena, and its aspects show which natal planets feed or distort the story.
- What does retrograde Fama mean?
- In the modern tradition a retrograde Fama is read as reputation turned inward: talk that happens out of your sight, or a name that arrives edited. It is a descriptive reading, not a warning, and none of it is testable.
- How accurate is the Fama placement here?
- Within about one degree across the 1850 to 2100 range, and closer near the present day. We propagate real JPL elements with a Kepler solver and check five anchors. Every orb we report is wider than that residual, so the aspects are stable.
- Is the meaning of Fama scientifically proven?
- No. Linking an asteroid named for rumour to your reputation is a modern interpretive tradition, not a measurable effect. We present an accurate position in the sky and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism.
