What an empty house is
A house is empty when no planet falls inside its span between one cusp and the next. With only ten bodies spread over twelve houses, most charts leave several houses vacant, and a few leave none at all.
An empty house does not mean that area of life is absent. It means the topic is run through its ruling planet rather than by a tenant living there directly. The house still describes a real field of experience; it simply borrows its messenger from elsewhere in the chart.
There is nothing to worry about in an empty house. Even very busy charts leave a handful vacant, and the reading is done by following the lords, which is exactly what this tool sets up for you.
How empty houses and their lords are found
We cast your chart, note which houses contain at least one planet, and list the rest as empty. For each empty house we take the sign on its cusp and find that sign's classical ruler.
Then we locate that ruler among your planets. Where the lord sits, by sign and house, is the address of the empty house's business. If a house cusp sign is ruled by a planet in the seventh, that vacant house plays out through relationships and the public.
Rulership here uses the classical domiciles, so a modern planet like Uranus never hijacks the assignment. This keeps the technique consistent with the traditional reading of vacancy through lordship.
What you get back
Enter your birth data and the tool returns each empty house with:
- The house number and the sign on its cusp.
- The classical ruler of that cusp sign.
- Where that ruler sits in your chart.
- The life theme the house governs.
- A count of occupied against empty houses.
Reading an empty house through its lord
Take each vacant house in turn and go to its ruler. The ruler's sign, house, and aspects tell you how that area of life actually operates in your chart. An empty second house of money, ruled by a planet in the tenth, points to income tied to career and public work.
Notice the theme the house carries. The twelve houses each govern a field, from self and money to home, career, and the unseen. An empty house often reads as a topic you approach more indirectly, or one with less built-in tension, because no planet is forced to live there.
Weigh the ruler's own condition. A strong, well-aspected lord handles its empty house with ease; an afflicted one shows where that vacant area runs into difficulty, even without a tenant.
Finally, watch transits. When a planet later crosses an empty house or its lord, that quiet area can wake up, because the trigger arrives from outside rather than from a resident.
A worked example: a London evening birth
Take the chart our verification script measures for 1 January 2000 at 17:30 UT in London. Five houses hold planets and seven stand empty, a common balance for a ten-body chart.
The empty first house of self has Cancer on its cusp, ruled by the Moon, and the Moon sits in the fifth. So this native's self-presentation and vitality run through the fifth house of creativity, play, and romance.
The empty fourth house of home has Libra on its cusp, ruled by Venus, also in the fifth. The roots and private foundation are therefore handled through the same creative and heartfelt territory, a fifth-house reading of home.
The empty eleventh house of friends is capped by Taurus, ruled again by Venus in the fifth, while the third and twelfth share Mercury in the sixth and the ninth draws Jupiter into the tenth. Every vacancy has a clear address, each degree reproduced by an automated check.
What this tool does not claim
Emptiness depends on the house system. This page uses the same quadrant frame as the calculator, and a different system can move a planet in or out of a house, changing which houses read as vacant.
Some traditions count the Sun, Moon, or the rising sign's ruler as occupying the first house even when no planet is there, and others treat an empty house as simply less active. This tool uses the plain rule: no planet within the span.
Reading a house through its lord is an interpretive technique passed down through traditional astrology, not a measured effect. Treat it as a map of where to look, not a prediction.
Empty houses beside full ones
A crowded house, with several planets, reads as a life area under constant internal pressure. An empty house reads as a field approached through a single delegate, its lord, which can feel lighter or more focused.
Neither is better. A chart is a mix, and the interesting question is where the lords of your vacant houses cluster, because that shows the real stages on which most of your life's business is performed.
To see the whole structure at once, cast the full chart and weigh the empty houses against the stelliums, the angles, and the aspects.
Our method in one line
Houses with no planet on sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine) in Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart) houses are matched to their cusp sign's classical ruler and that ruler's placement. Step by step
- 1
Enter your birth data
Add your birth date, time and place so the houses and their occupants are exact.
- 2
See which houses are empty
Read the vacant houses, their cusp signs, and how many houses hold planets.
- 3
Follow each house lord
Find where each empty house's ruler sits to see where that topic is handled.
- 4
Tip: look for clusters
Note when several lords land in one house, since that is where your life concentrates.
Frequently asked questions
- What does an empty house mean?
- An empty house has no planet within its span. It does not mean that area of life is missing. The topic is read through the house's ruling planet, which shows where and how that part of your life is actually conducted.
- How do you interpret a house with no planets?
- Find the sign on the empty house's cusp, then locate that sign's ruling planet in your chart. The ruler's house, sign, and aspects describe how the empty house's theme plays out, because the lord acts as its delegate.
- Is it rare to have empty houses?
- No, it is the norm. With only ten planets among twelve houses, most charts leave several houses vacant. Fully occupied charts are unusual, and even they leave a house or two empty.
- Do empty houses change with the house system?
- They can. Different house systems draw the cusp boundaries differently, so a planet may fall inside one house in a quadrant system but on a cusp in another. This tool uses one consistent frame for all its answers.
- Does this page store or upload my birth data?
- Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Every calculation runs on the spot inside your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to or kept on any server.
