What Draconic synastry measures
The Draconic zodiac shares its zero point with the Moon's North Node rather than 0° Aries of the tropical wheel. Converting a natal position to Draconic is a single subtraction: take the tropical longitude and remove the North Node's longitude, so the node lands on 0° and every other body shifts by that same amount. Do it to both partners and you get two charts measured by the same soul-oriented yardstick.
Draconic synastry then reads ordinary aspects between those two rotated charts. A contact that is invisible in the tropical wheel can appear here — and vice versa — because the rotation moves everything by each person's own node value. The tradition reads the Draconic overlay as the deeper, more fated-feeling layer of a bond, while the tropical overlay describes the personalities.
How we compute it
Each partner's chart is cast with the same sub-arcsecond ephemeris (sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine)) used everywhere on this site. Every position is then rotated into the Draconic frame by subtracting that chart's own mean North Node, so both wheels are rebased to a node at 0° Aries.
We form cross-aspects between the two rotated charts using the standard classical orbs — conjunction and opposition 8°, trine and square 6°, sextile 4° — exactly as the tropical synastry tool does, and drop each partner's lights into the other's whole-sign Draconic houses. Nothing about the astronomy is bespoke; only the frame the numbers are read in has changed.
What you get
After entering both birth records, the report shows:
- Each partner's Draconic Sun and Moon, so you can see how far the rotation carried them from the tropical signs.
- The tightest Draconic cross-aspects between the two rebased charts, each with its orb and a plain-English note.
- Whole-sign Draconic house overlays: where each person's Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars fall in the other's rotated wheel.
- An honest framing that the rotation is exact arithmetic while the 'soul' reading is interpretive tradition.
How it is traditionally read
Where tropical synastry answers 'do these two people get along', Draconic synastry is used to answer 'what is this bond actually about at a level neither personality chose'. Astrologers reach for it when a connection feels older or more compulsory than the surface charts explain — a pull that persists past the reasons. The lights falling into the other's Draconic houses mark which arenas of each rotated chart the pairing activates.
This is a lens, not a verdict. You can read the entire Draconic overlay as psychology for reflection — the same figures mean whatever patterns you choose to see in them — and none of it commits you to reincarnation or fate as literal fact. The arithmetic below the readings is exact; the meaning is inherited, and offered as such.
A worked example: A (1 Jan 2000) × B (20 May 1998)
Take partner A, born 1 January 2000, and partner B, born 20 May 1998, both at noon-ish London times. A's tropical Sun is 10.6° Capricorn; rebased to A's own node it becomes a Draconic Sun of 5.6° Virgo, and A's tropical Moon at 16.1° Scorpio becomes 11.0° Draconic Cancer. B moves further: a tropical Sun at 29.1° Taurus becomes 22.8° Draconic Sagittarius, and a tropical Moon at 13.9° Pisces becomes 7.5° Draconic Libra.
Read across the two rotated wheels and a set of contacts appears that the tropical charts play down: A's Draconic Mars sextiles B's Draconic Sun almost perfectly (orb 0.3°), A's Jupiter sits on B's Mars (0.7°), and A's Sun conjoins B's Uranus (0.8°). The tropical overlay between this pair produced 28 major cross-aspects; the Draconic overlay produces 30 — a different distribution, not simply more, which is exactly why the two layers are worth reading side by side rather than one instead of the other.
What this tool does not claim
There are at least two ways to construct a Draconic chart, and we are explicit about ours: we rotate each chart by subtracting that chart's own mean node, rebasing it to a node at 0°. Some authors build a single Draconic chart against the mean node and compare it to a tropical one, which is a different operation and gives different contacts.
Where we use the mean lunar node, others use the true node, and the handful-of-degrees difference can flip a tight aspect in or out.
Synastry — tropical or Draconic — is a description of fit, not a prediction of whether a relationship lasts or should. And like natal astrology generally, the interpretive tradition here has no controlled support. The rotation is exact; the 'soul chart' framing is cultural. All computation runs locally; neither birth chart leaves your browser.
Where it sits next to other readings
Our main Synastry Chart tool overlays the two tropical personality charts; the Composite & Davison tools merge the pair into a single third chart. This Draconic tool is the middle path: two charts kept separate but rotated into a deeper frame before comparison. For the individual Draconic chart — one person alone — see the Draconic Soul Blueprint tool.
Our method in one line
Both charts cast from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine), each rebased by subtracting its own mean North Node, then cross-aspected on standard orbs with whole-sign Draconic house overlays. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.
Step by step
- 1
Enter both birth records
Each person needs a date, time and place — the time and place set the node that anchors each rotated chart.
- 2
Compare the rebased lights
Note where each Draconic Sun and Moon landed; the distance from the tropical sign shows how much this frame shifts the story.
- 3
Read the contacts
The tightest Draconic cross-aspects are listed with orbs — a 0.3° contact is far more compelling here than a 5° one.
- 4
Hold both layers
Tip: run the tropical Synastry tool too and compare — a bond usually reads differently in each frame, and both are useful. Tip: treat the overlays as arenas of the connection, not verdicts.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the Draconic zodiac?
- It is a zodiac whose zero point is the Moon's North Node rather than the spring equinox. You build one by subtracting the node's longitude from every position in a chart, so the node sits at 0° Aries and the rest of the wheel rotates with it. Because the node axis marks the lunar eclipse line, the Draconic frame is tied to the Moon's orbit rather than to the seasons, which is why the tradition associates it with inner, karmic-feeling material.
- How is Draconic synastry different from normal synastry?
- Normal synastry overlays the two tropical charts and reads the aspects between them. Draconic synastry rotates each chart onto its own node before overlaying, so entirely different contacts come into orb. In practice both charts show a different emphasis: the tropical overlay describes how the personalities mesh, the Draconic overlay is used for the deeper pull the pair keeps returning to. Reading both is more complete than choosing one.
- Does Draconic synastry prove past lives or fate?
- No. The 'soul chart' language is inherited interpretive tradition, not evidence. You can get full use out of Draconic synastry purely as psychology: the rotated frame tends to surface contacts that feel more compulsory or less chosen than the surface chart, which makes it a useful vocabulary for the parts of a bond you did not consciously pick. It does not require you to believe in reincarnation.
- Why do the signs change so much between the two charts?
- Because each chart is rotated by its own node, and the node moves through the whole zodiac every 18.6 years. Two people born a few years apart can therefore have very different rotation amounts, shifting one person's Sun three signs and the other's barely at all. The resulting Draconic Sun and Moon are what we show for orientation before listing the contacts.
- Is our birth data private?
- Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Both charts are cast and rotated locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded or stored about either person.
