Declination Synastry — Vertical Parallel Bonds Between Two Charts

Standard synastry compares two charts around the zodiac, hunting for planets that conjunct or square by sign. It quietly ignores a second direction: how far north or south of the celestial equator each body sits. When one person's planet matches another's declination, the pair forms a cross-chart parallel, a bond that no sign aspect ever names. This tool casts two charts, reads every body's true declination, and lists the parallel and contra-parallel contacts running between them, adding the vertical layer to your relationship reading.

What declination synastry adds

Ordinary synastry compares two charts along the zodiac, looking for planets that conjunct, square or trine each other by sign. Declination synastry compares them on the second axis instead, north and south of the celestial equator. When one person's planet shares another's declination, the pair forms a cross-chart parallel, a quiet bond the sign aspects never mention.

When the two sit at equal distance on opposite sides, they form a contra-parallel, a vertical tension running alongside the flat chart. These contacts belong to the relationship rather than to either person alone, so readers treat them as an undercurrent living between the two wheels, felt more than seen.

How we compare two charts

We cast both birth charts and compute every body's declination from the same verified ephemeris. Then we take each of one person's ten bodies against each of the other's ten, and flag any pair whose declinations match inside the orb, or mirror to near zero across the equator. We sort the resulting contacts tightest first.

Because this compares two separate charts, unlike a within-chart pass, it never excludes a body from meeting its own counterpart. Your Venus facing their Venus is a real synastry contact here, even when the two signs sit far apart along the ecliptic.

What you get

Enter two birth records and the report shows:

  • Every cross-chart parallel, naming each person's body and the declination they share.
  • Every cross-chart contra-parallel, with the two bodies on opposite sides of the equator.
  • The orb of each contact, so you can judge how exact the vertical bond really is.
  • A tightest-first list with an adjustable orb, starting around half a degree.

How to read the vertical bonds between people

Read a cross-chart parallel as a private channel between two people. Because it ignores signs, it can join planets that form no ordinary aspect, adding a thread that only shows on the vertical axis. Many readers feel these bonds as an unspoken familiarity, a sense that two themes simply run together without effort.

A contra-parallel between charts reads like a quiet opposition, pulling the pair in mirrored directions. Its charge depends on which bodies hold it, so a Venus-to-Venus contra-parallel colours a bond differently than a heavy Saturn contact does. Weigh them alongside the flat synastry, never in place of it.

A worked example: A born 1 Jan 2000 17:30 UTC, B born 20 Jul 1988 08:30 UTC

Put these two charts side by side and the scanner lists nine contacts within a one-degree orb. The tightest joins A's Neptune at −19.21° to B's Jupiter at +19.19°, a contra-parallel within just 0.02°. Next comes A's Sun contra-parallel to B's Mercury at 0.25°, then A's Venus contra-parallel to B's Venus at 0.49°.

Several southern planets also run parallel across the pair, including A's Sun to B's Uranus at 0.62° and A's Mercury to B's Uranus at 0.80°. None of these bonds needs a sign relationship to exist, which is exactly the point of reading the vertical axis in synastry.

What this tool does not claim

This is a symbolic overlay, not a proven force. There is no controlled evidence that matching declinations between two people shape a relationship. We present every contact as food for reflection, never as a verdict on compatibility or a prediction of how a bond will unfold.

The declinations themselves depend on the birth instants, not the locations, so place matters here only for the wider charts you may compare against. All computation runs locally in your browser; neither person's birth data is uploaded or stored.

How it fits the flat synastry

Pair this with the full Synastry Chart, which reads the zodiacal aspects between the same two people. Where that tool measures angles around the ecliptic, this one measures the north-south echoes across it. Read the two together to notice bonds that light up on both axes, and the quieter ones that live only here.

Our method in one line

Both charts cast with sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine), every body's declination compared across the pair for equal and opposite values inside the chosen orb, cross-checked against an independent equatorial solver to 0.004°. Houses use Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart). Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter two birth records

Date, time and place for each person. The instants drive the declinations; the wider chart comparison uses the places.

  2. 2

    Set an orb

Start near half a degree for the surest bonds, or widen toward one to catch looser vertical contacts.

  3. 3

    Read the parallels

Each line joins one person's body to the other's at a matching declination. Note the orb for how exact the channel feels.

  4. 4

    Read the contra-parallels

These mirror across the equator, one north and one south. Tip: overlay the list with your flat synastry to see which bonds also form a sign aspect.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cross-chart parallel in synastry?
A cross-chart parallel links one person's planet to another's when the two share the same declination, sitting the same distance above or below the celestial equator. Readers treat it like a conjunction that works on the vertical axis, blending the two themes even when the signs form no ordinary aspect. It is a bond of the relationship rather than of either chart alone.
Are contra-parallels between two people difficult?
Not necessarily difficult, but dynamic. A contra-parallel holds one person's north planet and the other's south planet in a mirrored tension, read like an opposition without a sign relationship. Some pairs feel it as productive polarity that keeps them balancing each other; others feel it as friction. The bodies involved and the flat synastry shape which.
Do I need exact birth times for declination synastry?
You need the instants to a reasonable accuracy, since declination depends on where the sky stood at each birth. The slower outer planets drift only a little across a day, so an approximate time is often enough for them, while the fast Moon can shift its declination by several degrees in hours. A precise time keeps every contact, especially lunar ones, trustworthy.
How is this different from an ordinary synastry chart?
An ordinary synastry chart measures angles between two planets around the zodiac, giving conjunctions, squares and trines by sign. This tool measures the north-south positions of those same planets and reports matches across that second axis. The two analyses share one ephemeris but describe different geometry, so they answer complementary questions rather than the same one.
Is our birth data private?
Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Both charts, every declination and each parallel contact are computed locally in your browser; nothing about either person is uploaded to or stored on any server.
