What Chariklo means in a natal chart

Chariklo is minor planet number 10199, discovered in 1997 as 1997 CU26. It is the biggest of the centaurs — the wandering bodies between Jupiter and Neptune — and it made astronomy history in 2014 when two thin rings were found around it. Before that, only the giant planets were thought to wear rings.

The name belongs to a centaur of Greek story: Chariclo, called queen of the centaurs, a friend of the gods and in some tellings the nurse of Athena. The word itself is simple — grace, charm, the shine that attends a person.

Astrologers use Chariklo for the grace principle: favour, elegance, the retinue that lifts you. Its sign and house say how charm moves; its aspects say what it circulates around. None of this is a testable claim; the symbolism is labelled clearly as symbolism.

How we compute the Chariklo placement

astronomy-engine carries the ten major planets, so Chariklo gets its own ephemeris. We ship a table of its orbit sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons between 1850 and 2100. Each row holds the orbital elements at that moment. At your birth time we interpolate the bracketing rows and solve Kepler's equation by Newton iteration.

That gives a heliocentric position. We subtract Earth's place from sub-arcsecond VSOP87 to get the geocentric line of sight, then precess and rotate into the tropical zodiac of your birth date. The path is checked against five JPL anchors, and Chariklo lands within about 0.7 degrees.

What you get back

After you enter your birth data and cast the chart:

  • The exact sign, degree and house of Chariklo in your natal chart, plus its daily motion and whether it runs retrograde.
  • Every Ptolemaic aspect Chariklo makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, sorted tightest first, with the orb shown.
  • A short traditional gloss of Chariklo's meaning, so a first-time reader has words for what Chariklo square Venus actually claims.
  • An honest note on the accuracy of the position, so you know how far you can lean on each aspect.

How to read your Chariklo placement

Read Venus first, because the planets already own charm and attraction. Chariklo is used for the wider, older sense of grace: being favoured, moving well among people, having a circle that reflects you. Its house says where the retinue gathers.

Then take the aspects as the ring-system of the theme. Links to Venus tune personal attraction; links to Mercury tune the social conversation. Contacts inside two or three degrees carry; loose ones near the six-degree edge only hint.

Reading the Chariklo placement

Sign gives the style of grace. Chariklo in an earth sign is favour earned by competence; in a fire sign it is warmth that gathers people on the spot. The house names the court: the second is what your circle values, the eighth what it shares behind closed doors.

Aspects decide the temperature. Chariklo conjunct Venus reads as charm multiplied — the tradition's easy grace. Chariklo square Mars is favour that has to survive envy or friction. An unaspected Chariklo keeps the theme quiet: a grace that never quite gets an audience until a transit arrives.

A worked example, with real numbers

Take a birth at 17:30 on 1 January 2000 in London. Our solver places Chariklo at 1.25 degrees of Virgo, in the second house, retrograde at about 0.03 degrees a day. It sits nearly twelve degrees south of the ecliptic. Its contacts form a small web: a square to Venus at 0.60 degrees, a trine to Mercury at 1.00 and an opposition to Mars at 3.10.

In this tradition that reads as grace through precision — Virgo second-house favour carried by skilful speech, with Venus squaring the charm and Mars opposing from a distance: admired, useful, and contested in the same breath.

A second chart, cast for 12:30 on 15 July 1990 in Berlin, puts Chariklo direct at 29.08 degrees of Gemini in the eighth house, its only contact a loose applying conjunction to Venus at 4.65 degrees. The same body there reads as shared-resource charm at the very end of an air sign — grace arriving late, wide and easy.

What this tool does not claim

The position is a two-body Kepler propagation of JPL osculating elements, not a full n-body integration. Chariklo wanders among the giant planets in reality, so the JPL anchor check matters — and it holds the shipped table inside about one degree across the whole 1850 to 2100 span.

The meaning of Chariklo is interpretive tradition, not astronomy. The rings are real; the grace is a metaphor. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.

Chariklo against Venus and the other centaurs

Venus owns attraction, taste and value; Chariklo is used for the older, social face of the same light: being favoured rather than desiring. Readers cast Venus for what you love and Chariklo for who makes room for you.

Among the centaurs she is also the gentlest name. Chiron carries the wound, Pholus the torch, Nessus the poisoned gift — Chariklo carries grace, and her myth puts her at the gods' table rather than in their battles. The set gives an astrologer a full emotional register within one dynamical class of body.

Our method in one line

Osculating elements for (10199) Chariklo, sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons (DE441) and propagated with a Newton-solved Kepler solver to your birth instant. Earth comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Aspects use the Ptolemaic set with a six-degree outer orb. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Date, exact time and place. Chariklo changes sign every few years, so the date drives the picture.

  2. 2

    Cast the placement

Chariklo lands in sign, degree and house against your natal chart.

  3. 3

    Scan the aspects

Sorted tightest first, every contact into your personal planets shows with its orb.

  4. 4

    Compare with Venus

Set the two side by side to separate attraction from favour.

Tip — Chariklo's retrograde turn reads traditionally as grace withdrawn and re-learned, not lost.

Frequently asked questions

What is Chariklo in astronomy?
Chariklo is minor planet 10199, discovered in 1997 and the largest known centaur. In 2014 it became the first asteroid ever found to have rings — a result that surprised planetary science.
What does Chariklo represent in astrology?
Modern astrologers read Chariklo as grace: favour, elegance and the social circle that reflects a person. Its sign sets the style, its house names where favour gathers, and its aspects show what helps or irritates it.
Who was Chariclo in myth?
A centaur of Greek story, called queen of the centaurs and a friend of the gods; in some tellings she is the nurse of Athena. The name simply means grace — a rare, warm figure among a wild kin.
How accurate is the Chariklo placement here?
Within about one degree across the 1850 to 2100 range, and closer near the present day. We propagate real JPL elements with a Kepler solver and check five anchors. Every orb we report is wider than that residual, so the aspects are stable.
Is the meaning of Chariklo scientifically proven?
No. Turning a ringed centaur named for grace into a personality symbol is a modern interpretive tradition, not a measurable effect. We present an accurate position in the sky and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism.
