Bonification & Maltreatment Calculator — Who Helps and Who Harms Your Anchors

The Hellenistic writers sorted the planets into two moral camps. Jupiter and Venus were the benefics, the doers of good. Saturn and Mars were the malefics, the doers of harm. When a benefic casts a soft ray at a point in your chart, the tradition calls it bonification. When a malefic casts a hard ray, it calls it maltreatment. This calculator runs both tests on your four anchors.

Two ledgers for every anchor

A bonification is a helpful gaze. Jupiter or Venus sits in a sign that trines or sextiles your anchor, and the ray of support lands on it. The tradition read this as protection, advantage and a softening of whatever the anchor governs.

A maltreatment is a harmful gaze. Saturn or Mars sits in a sign that squares or opposes your anchor, and the hard ray lands on it. The tradition read this as pressure, delay or friction around the same point.

The two tests use the same wheel but different filters. Witnessing asks which planets cast any soft ray. Bonification asks only whether the two benefics do. Maltreatment asks only whether the two malefics cast a hard one.

How we run the two tests

For each anchor we take the whole-sign distance to every planet. A distance of four signs is a trine, two is a sextile, three is a square and six is an opposition. These are the by-sign rays the classical authors used, with no degree orbs involved.

Then the filter runs. Jupiter or Venus with a trine or sextile enters the bonification column. Saturn or Mars with a square or opposition enters the maltreatment column. Everything else is ignored: a benefic with a hard ray counts for neither.

We test four anchors: the Ascendant, the Midheaven, the Sun and the Moon. When the anchor is a planet itself, that planet drops out of its own candidate list, since nothing can behold itself from its own sign.

What the report returns

The tool shows one block per anchor, each with two labeled columns:

  • Bonifications: which benefic beholds the anchor, and whether by trine or sextile.
  • Maltreatments: which malefic afflicts the anchor, and whether by square or opposition.
  • An empty column is printed as none, so a clean anchor reads as clearly as an afflicted one.
  • All four anchors share one chart cast, so the whole report comes from a single set of positions.

A worked example: one blessing and two blows

Take the London chart at 1 January 2000, 17:30 UT. The Ascendant is in Cancer, the Midheaven in Aries, the Sun in Capricorn and the Moon in Scorpio. Venus stands in Sagittarius, Mars in Aquarius and Saturn in Taurus.

The Midheaven draws the only bonification. Venus in Sagittarius trines Aries by sign, so the career point receives a soft ray from the benefic of pleasure and value. The public path is helped, at least by one voice.

The Moon takes the only maltreatments, and it takes two. Mars in Aquarius squares Scorpio by sign, and Saturn in Taurus opposes it. Both malefics, both hard rays, both landing on the emotional self. The inner life runs under friction and limits at once.

The Cancer Ascendant and the Capricorn Sun read clean on both ledgers. No benefic trines or sextiles them from where Jupiter and Venus sit, and no malefic squares or opposes them from where Mars and Saturn sit. A silent column is a real answer.

Weighing the two columns

Read one anchor at a time, and compare its columns the way you would weigh a scale. Two bonifications and no maltreatments is an easy point. One of each is a mixed brief, where help and pressure arrive together.

Then separate the pair. A Jupiter blessing brings growth, protection and a generous reading of the anchor's theme. A Venus blessing brings charm, comfort and cooperation. The two benefics do not feel alike.

The same holds for the blows. A Saturn maltreatment brings delay, cold and structure demanding patience. A Mars maltreatment brings speed, conflict and heat. One anchor hit by both, as the Scorpio Moon is above, lives with both flavors at once.

Keep the four anchors separate when you read. The Ascendant is your own skin, the Midheaven is your public height, the Sun is your will and the Moon is your inner weather. A blessing that lands on the career point says nothing direct about the emotional self, and a blow aimed at the Moon leaves the Midheaven untouched. The columns are per-anchor for exactly that reason.

What this tool does not claim

The benefic and malefic labels are traditional values, not moral judgments about the planets themselves. Saturn preserves as often as it restricts, and Mars defends as often as it attacks. The two-column model is a simplification the tradition then complicated with sect.

We apply no degree orbs. A malefic that squares by sign but sits twenty degrees away from an exact square still counts here. That is the classical rule, and it makes this tool broader than the modern aspect list.

Sect is not applied. Diurnal charts treat Venus differently from nocturnal ones, and the benefics swap some weight by sect. The Traditional Chart page carries that extra layer; this page keeps the filter simple and checkable.

Our method in one line

Positions come from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine), read through Porphyry quadrant houses (whole-sign available on every chart). Bonification and maltreatment use the sign-relation test with the fixed benefic and malefic filter described above. Every worked-example figure is reproduced by an automated probe. Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Add date, time and place. The tool casts the whole-sign chart and loads the four anchors.

  2. 2

    Compare the columns

For each anchor, read the bonification list against the maltreatment list, not in isolation.

  3. 3

    Name the flavor

Tell Jupiter's help from Venus's, and Saturn's delay from Mars's friction. The partner matters.

  4. 4

    Cross-check the rays

Tip: pair this report with the Witnessing Calculator to see soft rays from planets outside the two benefics.

Frequently asked questions

What is bonification in astrology?
Bonification is the classical term for a benefic's help. Jupiter or Venus beholds a point by trine or sextile from its sign, and the tradition read that soft ray as protection and advantage flowing to the point.
What is maltreatment in astrology?
Maltreatment is the hard counterpart. Saturn or Mars beholds a point by square or opposition from its sign, and the tradition read that ray as pressure, delay or friction working against whatever the point governs.
Which planets are the benefics and malefics?
The great benefics are Jupiter and Venus, and the great malefics are Saturn and Mars. These four are the entire cast of this tool, because the classical test only asks what the moral pair is doing to your anchors.
Can an anchor have both bonifications and maltreatments?
Yes, and many charts show exactly that mix. One benefic lending support while one malefic applies pressure is the ordinary state of affairs, and the reading lies in weighing which ray describes the theme better.
Does this tool store or upload my birth data?
Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared. Every bonification and maltreatment column is computed inside your browser, and nothing you enter is sent to or kept on any server.
