Aura Asteroid in Your Natal Chart — Free Calculator

The Aura asteroid names the glow around a person rather than the person themselves — presence, atmosphere, the effect you have before you speak. This calculator places (1488) Aura for your birth instant.

What Aura means in a natal chart

Aura is asteroid number 1488, first observed in 1938 as 1938 XE and named for the breeze. The Greek Aurae were nymphs of the air — the moving atmosphere that carries scent, sound and heat from one person to another.

Astrologers borrow that image for the subtle layer of a chart: not what you do but what you give off. Aura's sign and house say what kind of presence you radiate and where it registers on other people. Its aspects say what feeds or disturbs the current.

None of this is a testable claim. Breeze-to-personality reading is a modern interpretive tradition. We give you an accurate position in the sky and label the meaning clearly as symbolism.

How we compute the Aura placement

astronomy-engine carries the ten major planets, so Aura gets its own ephemeris. We ship a table of its orbit sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons between 1850 and 2100. Each row holds the orbital elements at that moment. At your birth time we interpolate the bracketing rows and solve Kepler's equation by Newton iteration.

That gives a heliocentric position. We subtract Earth's place from sub-arcsecond VSOP87 to get the geocentric line of sight, then precess and rotate into the tropical zodiac of your birth date. The path is checked against five JPL anchors, and Aura lands within about 0.8 degrees.

What you get back

After you enter your birth data and cast the chart:

  • The exact sign, degree and house of Aura in your natal chart, plus its daily motion and whether it runs retrograde.
  • Every Ptolemaic aspect Aura makes to your Sun, Moon and personal planets, sorted tightest first, with the orb shown.
  • A short traditional gloss of Aura's meaning, so a first-time reader has words for what Aura in the sixth house actually claims.
  • An honest note on the accuracy of the position, so you know how far you can lean on each aspect.

How to read your Aura placement

Read the Ascendant and the Moon first, because they already describe how you arrive and how you feel. Aura is the quieter third: the atmosphere people sense from you but cannot name. Its house shows where that atmosphere is generated.

Then take the aspects in order. A tight link to a personal planet means the glow has a source — Mercury for speech, Venus for charm, the Moon for feeling. Contacts inside two or three degrees carry; loose ones near the six-degree edge only hint.

Reading the Aura placement

Sign sets the temperature of the breeze. Aura in an earth sign reads as a steady, grounding presence; in a water sign as an emotional field people absorb before they notice it. The house is the room where the atmosphere forms — work, home, romance or the open road.

Aspects are the weather. Aura square Jupiter, in the modern reading, is a glow that grows when shared and can over-inflate when alone. Aura square Saturn is a presence that must earn its warmth. An unaspected Aura keeps the theme private — a field people sense but the chart itself never explains.

A worked example, with real numbers

Take a birth at 17:30 on 1 January 2000 in London. Our solver places Aura at 23.57 degrees of Capricorn, in the sixth house, moving direct at about 0.34 degrees a day. It sits nearly seven degrees south of the ecliptic. Its one contact inside orb is an applying square to Jupiter at 1.70 degrees.

In this tradition that combination reads as a quiet, competent presence in daily work — a Capricorn sixth-house glow whose tension with Jupiter is the point: steadiness forever pressed by expansion, restraint square to enthusiasm.

A second chart, cast for 12:30 on 15 July 1990 in Berlin, puts Aura at 20.61 degrees of Aries, again in the sixth house, but with three squares fanning out: Saturn at 1.36 degrees, Jupiter at 1.95 and the Sun at 2.16. The same body there reads as a much more visible, effortful presence — a fiery atmosphere in ordinary work that the whole personal chart has to absorb at once.

What this tool does not claim

The position is a two-body Kepler propagation of JPL osculating elements, not a full n-body integration. Real belt motion is pulled by Jupiter and the planets. Near the 1850 and 2100 edges that drift reaches about one degree. Astrological orbs start at two, so no reading here sits on the edge of the error bar.

The meaning of Aura is interpretive tradition, not astronomy. We ship an accurate sky and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism. Calculations run entirely in your browser. Your birth data is never uploaded, never stored on a server, and never shared.

Aura against the Ascendant, Venus and Fama

The Ascendant is the doorway people see; Venus is the value you project; Fama is the talk that follows you. Aura sits between the inner chart and the outer impression — the un-named atmosphere layer. Readers reach for it when the question is not what you show but what you leave in a room.

Its name also shares an ancient root with aurora, the dawn light. That is etymology, not astronomy — but it explains why tradition pairs Aura with things half-seen: warmth, mood, the sense of someone before conversation starts.

Our method in one line

Osculating elements for (1488) Aura, sampled yearly from NASA JPL Horizons (DE441) and propagated with a Newton-solved Kepler solver to your birth instant. Earth comes from sub-arcsecond astronomy (VSOP87/ELP via astronomy-engine). Aspects use the Ptolemaic set with a six-degree outer orb. Reviewed by Dr. Amara Osei, Astronomy Reviewer.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Enter your birth data

Date, exact time and place. The Aura degree shifts every few days, so the time matters.

  2. 2

    Cast the placement

Aura lands in sign, degree and house against your natal chart.

  3. 3

    Scan the aspects

Sorted tightest first, every contact into your personal planets shows with its orb.

  4. 4

    Find the source

Use the aspects to name which planet feeds your atmosphere.

Tip — Read Aura's house as the workshop of your presence — where the glow is actually made, not displayed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the asteroid Aura?
Aura is asteroid number 1488, first observed in 1938 and named for the breeze. In Greek myth the Aurae were nymphs of the moving air. Astrologers use the body as a symbol of presence and subtle influence.
What does Aura represent in astrology?
Astrologers read Aura as the atmosphere around a person — what you give off before you act. Its sign colours the field, its house names where it forms, and its aspects show which natal planets feed or disturb it.
Is Aura the same as the Ascendant?
No. The Ascendant is the mask and doorway — how you present. Aura is used for the layer beneath presentation: the un-chosen effect of being near you. Readers cast the Ascendant for style and Aura for substance of atmosphere.
How accurate is the Aura placement here?
Within about one degree across the 1850 to 2100 range, and closer near the present day. We propagate real JPL elements with a Kepler solver and check five anchors. Every orb we report is wider than that residual, so the aspects are stable.
Is the meaning of Aura scientifically proven?
No. Connecting an asteroid named for the breeze to personal presence is a modern interpretive tradition, not a measurable effect. We present an accurate position in the sky and label the symbolism clearly as symbolism.
